South Park Muhammad joke won't air in Sweden

The Swedish affiliate of broadcaster Comedy Central has said it will not show two controversial episodes of US satirical cartoon show South Park depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad in a bear costume, Aftonbladet reports.

"However, the safety of our employees is our unquestioned number one priority, and therefore we have decided to take these precautionary measures," the broadcaster explained in a statement released to Aftonbladet.
Spokesman Peter von Satzgerl told the Svenska Dagbladet daily that the decision came as a result of "international directives" from the channel's parent network in the United States.
The Muhammad joke formed part of a 200th anniversary episode screened in the US on April 14th, prompting threats of retribution from an Islamist group directed towards the notoriously irreverent show's creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
The warning, posted on the website revolutionmuslim.com and interpreted as a direct threat in much of the US media, cautioned Stone and Parker that they "will probably wind up like Theo van Gogh", a Dutch filmmaker murdered in 2004 after making a film critical of Islamic society.
The pair appeared to heed the warning last week when the second part of the centenary show was aired, with the word Censored appearing after the Muslim prophet's name was mentioned, and with the bear-suited Muhammad replaced by Santa Claus.
The first episode contained typically mocking depictions of several religious figures and assorted celebrities, with Buddha at one point being chastised by Jesus for snorting cocaine. It is not the first time that Muhammad and other religious figures have featured on the show, having previously put in an appearance in the fifth season episode Super Best Friends.
The 200th episode tells the story of a class action suit filed by all the celebrities who have been mocked on the show. Tom Cruise promises to end the law suit if the town can produce the Muslim prophet Muhammad.
The South Park townsfolk in the end decide to hand Muhammad over to a group calling itself the Ginger Separatist Movement, to avert a threatened bombing of the town.
The original broadcast of the show was watched by 3.33 million US viewers but, following the Comedy Central decision, Swedish viewers will now have to find other ways to access the controversial episode of the smash hit show.

Of course South Park can make fun of absolutely everything else but not of your favorite people in whole world who threaten you with death if ther overly excited sensibilities get a little hurt.

We don't live in a middle ages with witch burning and other stuff. Religion is not mandatory if you want to live, so if someone beleaves in tales it's ok for me, but when someone starts to get angry because people making funny cartoons about those tales, then I think that we are back in to the middle ages

Sweden tries to be the epitome of diplomacy in the world. I can understand why they'd refuse to air these episodes. Political relations are already tense in general in the Middle East, you don't want to make things worse unnecessarily by making the wrong kind of joke.
BUT at the same time, we do give Islam and terrorists and Muhammed more power by being afraid of them. Kind of like Harry Potter, the wizarding world and the name "Voldemort".

Another things, when freedom of expression is used as a provocative tool by some, I really don't think it would also be something good. If everyone is free to do whatever without any rules or at least self-respect then this will lead to social chaos.

I totally agree with the point made regarding freedom of speech: It's interesting that any jew, christian, atheist, gay, fat people, canadian etc. have never threatened to kill any of the producers while a few Mulsims extremists did that. So why air the other episodes and not the ones with the Muslim if both can be regarded as 'disrespectful'? Nonetheless, I disagree with Swedish position of not airing it and I don't think airing it consists of an act of disrespecting the Muslin religion.
It is important to point out that not ALL Muslims are the same! These ones - who made the threat and killed Theo Van Gogh - are just a small group of them. And they are extremists! That makes perfect sense if you understand freedom of speech. One may not like what is said, but one has respect the right to say it. Virtues are not more important than rights in the west, so we will have to vehemently disagree on that one.
What is provocative? Is an iman calling for death to infidels because he believes the quran tells him to do so, or calling for the establishment of a caliphate to replace secular governments being provocative? One can't cry "disrespect," or "that's provocative," when it is convenient. However, if a provocative comparison is to be made, then a cartoon of a historical figure that 4.5 billion non muslims around the world deem to be irrelevant is less provocative than calling for a death over said cartoon.

In the same episode Jesus is watching porn and buddha is snorting cocaine. The whole point of the episode was that Tom Cruise wanted Mohommads powers so that he could not be riduculed anymore, instead of being called a fudge packer.
Mohommad was not shown (not even a hand!) and Mohammad was only shown inside a bear outfit (which actaully turned out to be santa claus)

Actually the cartoons were caricatures of Mohammed based on the actions of extremists in your religion. Mohammed wearing a bomb hat, Allah telling the newly arrived suicide bombers that heavens supply of virgins was running low, etc, etc. The reaction to the cartoons (murder and riots) only reinforced the accuracy of the cartoons.
The cartoons and their "disrespect" came after members of your religion started killing people indiscriminantly. You are correct that respect is important, but it has to be a two way street. Demanding respect from the west in the face of disrespect and the complete disregard for the sanctity of life from members of your religion, is unreasonable and irrational. Islam needs a Serpico.

There is a saying "I don't like what you say but I defend your right to say it".
That is why so many people here are upset about the decision not to air this show on TV here. Because not airing it, no matter what you feel about the contents, feels like a return to the time when Christianity owned the law in the west, when notions of decency and respect and shame and honor were codified in law and when blasphemy was a capital crime.
It's about respect for the principles that allow us to enjoy the benefits of modern life. Freedom of speech is one of those principles. True respect for this principle is allowing the show to air whether you like it or not. That is respect. In the modern context respect is about respecting that everyone is a human being with human rights no matter if they are a different religion from you, a different sexual orientation from you and no matter if they say things you don't like. The fact that you have not condemned the death threats and seem to imply that people should expect death threats if they don't kowtow to the sensibilities of religious people shows that you utterly fail to understand the basis of modern Western society.

I fully believe that the blasphemous images should be printed and widely distributed to show the entire population that western values of an open, liberal society should prevail over first millennial ignorance. However, if only one country or one organization or company stands up to the insanity of religious extremism, that organization will become targets of extremism.
Interetingly, the 'threat' was made by a US non-extremist Muslim group who had simply warned it could cause repercussions by others, given past events.
Thus making this entire event a total overreaction and frankly a national embarassment.
This is the result of political correctness and politeness to accomodate certain people that frankly have shown less than the same courtesy, tolerance and understanding back to their hosts compared to others.

Such was his kindness The thing is your media don't tell you about these things. I know Europe has some history of dark ages where religion's role was not so good and you have reasons for that but try not to frame islam in the description of religion you have gotten from your history, since at that time there was Golden Age in Islamic world and the vary same religion (Islam) was practiced and advancements in the science were made at the same time in harmony with religion.

What worries me that when people in Europe talk about freedom of expression they don't consider the double standards, an example could be a recent appology by british foriegn office for one of its officials used bad words for pope, but it doesn't happen when it comes to Islam... Peter Vinthagen Simpson, the author who wrote this, has committed the worst sacrilege. Matt and Trey were outraged at the censorship and didn't heed any warning, whether from Comedy Central or the lunatics who threatened them. By contract, Comedy Central has final editing rights and there was little Matt and Trey could do about what is aired. It is simply blasphemy to suggest they would ever back off. The author who wrote this (oddly, no relation to Homer Simpson) should apologize.

As a muslim, I would be delighted if the USA police arrests these two extremist Yousef al-Khattab and Younes Abdullah, the founder of Revolution Muslim, and puts them behind bars. Local mosque in New York has contacted the police to arrest these two guys but police does not want so for the reason that is a rocket science to me. It is crystal clear that these extremists are threat to public safety. Now it is the responsibility of authorities AND not the individual muslims to arrest such miscreants. What individual muslims can do is it to inform the police and authorities and then it is duty of Police to act.

It seems quite ridiculous to claim that Muslims are violent in the light of above facts. So media should stop this campaign of maligning Islam, instead they should report violence without associating it to any religion in the world. But if they do want to relate violence to religions then any act of violence should be related to the religion of the perpetrators and not only when a Muslim does an act of violence.
I don't think looking out for the safety of their staff is cowardly.
