Swedish monarchy losing support: poll

Monarchy is part of over 2000 years of Swedish tradition, heritage and culture and is something the Sweden needs to be proud of and maintain at all cost. Without the monarchy, Sweden would turn into just "another" degenerated and souless country. Without the King, Sweden just wouldn't be Sweden any more.

We all know what happened to Russia when the commies killed their royals, they ended up with 60 years of the Soviet Union and they totally killed all culture, religion and traditions. Do not let socialists and communists kill this country too.

This is another damned, rotten, lie by the leftist media and its unpatriotic socialist auxiliaries. The Swedish monarchy is NOT losing support amongst Swedes. Real Swedes very much supports the Royal family and the Kingdom. At the rate things are going in Sweden, her saving grace is the King and the Royalty. Dont listen to these sub-humans who call for the abolition of the Royal Family. It simply is not true.

Yes, among the monarchs themselves, thjey must limit their tenure to 10 or 15 years. I grew old waiting for Prince Charles to become the King, now I think Lady Diana's son is more appropriate to wear the crown.

Monarchy is a symbol. A beautiful symbol of the history of the Swedish Nation. It cannot be seen from a pragmatic point of view. Other countries suffer because they have not had the stability and political maturity that implies the Monarchy.

In my country, Mexico, an increasing (but still small) number of people miss the Crown: 200 years of republican errors have led us to a tremendous failure. It does not matter any more: we, the young monarchists, are in the exile, even if it is an inner one.

What is the point of abolition of a symbolic monarchy? Such monarchy recalls a fairy tale stuff in old times which is I think, people really likes and wants to live. So, I think Sweden must preserve its symbolic monarchy.

What is the alternative to a vibrant monarchy? To elect one old, tired and grey social democrat with limited support? Knut from the Kingdom of Norway

Today I am staggered. I am shocked. I am made to think again. How dare Sweden teach democracy to other poor states in the world while loving a monarchy itself? Isn't it interesting that you boycott a legal and democratic system in Iran, frown upon a huge democratic country like Pakistan, condemn Iraq's Saddam and Afghanistan's ruling elite etc while enjoying monarchy at home? Is this not the same country that gives lectures about democracy and freedom to the so-called thrid world countries? Is this not thew same same country that has connections with Israel? If you people think that monarchy is a good part of sweden's culture, why does your thinking get changed for the so-called third world coutries? In short is this not hypocrisy?

For a country where the dream is to be a mid-manager and sit in your IKEA furnished cubicle down loading illegal music (because down-loading porn is well risky) and hitting on the neighbor next door while accomplishing nothing in your life except fighting with your sisters and brothers on who gets the old summer house for July, this royal family is perfect for you.

change into a New World Order. Your King will be replaced by Union Heads, Liberal Socialist Leaders. You will love your new Kings. Sounds like something Glenn Beck would way. So you really think that *peacefully* ending the monarch would destroy Sweden, and turn it into a Stalinist dictatorship? Why didn't the US become a dictatorship when it got rid of the English Crown's authority?

As for my opinion on the matter, the monarchy is a lovely cultural symbol and is endearing, however it seems anachronistic and quaint, not to mention useless. I would say Sweden should dissolve its monarchy.

I hope we will keep this old symbol of our country, I dislike the idea of a president as a symbol of a country.

And also you must look at the organization that ordered this "survey", the republican society obviously is not partial and I definitely don't trust them with this survey.

This is a brilliant example of the paranoid loony left. The right-wing in the U.S., like the rest of the world, is unaware of the existence of the Swedish monarchy.

My support for the royalty is waning a bit as my support for aristocracy in general. The Swedish Monarchy does not have the control of wealth as other royal families and exist only due the support of the people. Some what of a duality of the very definition of a monarchy.

I think the Swedish monarchy has to be maintained. Culture is culture. In most of the countries where we have monarchies along side the democratic- political governance, things are much more treamilised to enhance the quality of life of their royal citizens. Swedish should be proud of theirs kingdom and should not disintegrate it or abolish it completely.

Well, here in the USA, we decided to get rid of the monarchy and "taxation without representation". Which we did.

Now, over 200 years later, Big Business has taken the place of the Monarchy and "taxation with representation" is certainly no improvement over "taxation without representation".

I think the correct interpretation is "the more things change, the more they remain the same."

I'm not Swedish, but I think I am correct in saying that, if you do get rid of the Royal Family, it won't improve one damned thing!

Sweden talk of democracy abroad is hypocritical as long as it maintains monarchy at home. Monarchy & democracy doesn't mix. They are two different conflicting extremes.

I understand that Sweden has a peaceful one, but monarchy is monarchy. it can never be called democratic.

I think that the monarchy in Sweden is a great asset for the "swedish brand". While there is an increasing search for ways to improve the swedish image abroad as a touristic destination, i think selling sweden as one of the last remaining monarchies on earth can play a pivotal role in the process. On another hand i think "electing the monarchy" is a people's choice too and by that it's an another form of democracy as long as freewill stands still. So in a nation with strong traditions of threwing away its title brands, such as IKEA, Tetra Pack, Saab Cars and Volvo Cars, i think keeping hands on one of their remaining few can't be but the right choice. Sweden don't cut bounds with your history, all the opposite preserve them.

Just amazed to read the comments of those who think that Sweden is acknowledged better by the royals :D Probably those folks don't tend to talk to the nationals or maybe travel to other parts of the world. Because if one travels around the world then one will realize that Sweden is hugely recognized by ABBA & IKEA and NOT the royals ;)

The world currently is moving towards being a global village and being hand in hand. We must all recognize each other by the face value than the one whose country has had some history or not..

Personally... I think there is no place for the aristocratic hang ups from the past in this modern and civilized world where double standards should be peacefully addressed

If we are not to have a monarchy any longer, the tradition, the buildings, and even the history will of course remain!

Do you really think that the few tourists that come to Sweden to see a couple of monarchic sets will make a difference if there is or not a living king or queen? c'mon, this is not England people! The Swedish crown barelly gets 100 people daily in the slott in Gamla Stan. I think they are a big cost for such a small income.

Besides, monarchy is about bloodline tradition. Nowadays princesses and princes marry any walking regular person, what is the logic in turning those into blur blood and supporting them forever? makes no sense at all to me....

It actually made no sense at all from the beggining to me! but anyway, those who want to keep the Kingdom are very well happy to go back in time and return to the farms to provide everything to their crown. (transformed nowadays in long working hours and tax paying)

Oh the classic monarchist/royalist vs. anti-monarchist/republican debate. Is it about time that you BOTH get your head out of your asses?

My family comes from Scotland, one of the oldest kingdoms in the World. The Monarchy is also a highly controversial issue there too. This is because the present British royal family is German, having replaced the previous Scottish royal family which was deposed over religious allegiances in the 18th century. I grew up in South Africa and have lived under republican governments for most of my life. Frankly, I cannot see why the republican system is better than constitutional monarchy. Most of the Presidents of South Africa, both white and black have been tainted by corruption and questionable political integrity. I personally believe that the Head of State should not be a politician. Just look at the American and French republics. That's why I believe that constitutional monarchy- where it part of the national tradition- is probably the best system. All the countries who have established constitutional monarchy are stable, democratic, and peaceful- just look at Spain, and Cambodia, both countries which previously had gastly civil wars and dictatorships. The Swedish and Scottish monarchies represent a heritage which is almost 2000 years old- how then would a Social Democrat Swedish President make Sweden a better country? King Karl Gustaf Bernadotte can trace his ancestry back to the Viking kings- the founders of Sweden. The Swedish king carries out trade missions around the World which benefit Sweden in the long term. Furthermore, voting patterns in 21st century Europe show an increasing fragmentation, with no one political party being able to claim an outright majority- look at the Scottish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and British elections- so which of these party leaders can claim to be president? I cannot see why Sweden would be a better country without it's 1500 year old monarchy.
