Tax agency swamped with online declarations

The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) website struggled to cope on Sunday as large numbers of people filed last minute online declarations, with many greeted with a message to try again in 15 minutes.

"There is no technical fault, there are simply too many trying to declare at the same time," said Kay Kojer at the tax agency.
The problem experienced by those filing their taxes is encountered when people try to log in using their electronic bank identifications and is primarily affecting customers at Swedbank, Danske Bank and Handelsbanken.
Kojer pointed out that 450,000 people declared online in the penultimate day last year, which is typically the busiest of all despite declaration notices having been sent out back in March.
This year the agency expects the number of online declarations to have exceeded 500,000 on Sunday, of which a fifth log in using the electronic bank identification system.
Kojer was keen to stress that people still have the whole of Monday to file their declarations and advises that they just keep trying or use one of the alternative identification methods.

If the resources are not in place to handle the influx caused by this form of tax filing, then it clearly shows poor management and the fault lays within the planning and implementation of this tax return system. And considering the TAX office have a very good idea on the amount of returns they will or should receive I find this oversight unacceptable especially based on what is one of the highest TAX rates used in the world.

Unfortunately I disagree with you.
It appears that a direct translation from Swedish to English has caused this lost in translation situation. The same ay that you get a prescription from a doctor and not a recipe.
It's like the situation in the UK that the whole country comes to a standstill when there is more that 2cm of snow. This is because the local authorities have judged it to be not economically viable to invest in equipment and infrastructure that they only need to use one year out of every five.
Besides, how would you rather that your tax money is spent? On schools, hospitals, public transport etc., or on implementing a website capable of handling 500,000 simultaneous users for 2 days every yesr?
1st. If a system is economically non viable (which you havent proved otherwise) then why offer it?
2nd. Using a foreign based snow flourish in an unpredictable area in a unpredictable time frame to justify rationality doesnt hold any merit.
Thirdly how would I want my tax money spent? On services that I pay for such as administration. If I pay a high fee for a hotel, I expect a nice hotel ... If I pay high fee for food, I expect good food ... and so on.
I disagree with your comment about the Skatteverket website not being in place to be able cope.
No system can cope with that amount of traffic all at once. I like many left it late to declare and last night was one of those people trying to declare over the Internet and I like many had to wait , as I LEFT IT LATE and that is the problem here. LEFT IT LATE. That is my own fault. Not the fault of the website.
The system has been in place for a couple of months and people could have declared earlier (me included). So we really are all somewhat at fault here for overloading the sytem. I for one, next year will declare far earlier than this .
So Byke put your criticism into a proper perspective and not just a moan about the Tax authorities.
No one has left it late, if you see the article in question it clearly states that there is a large amount of BEFORE the due date. This date has been set up by the administrators and not those being taxed.

When the taxforms were released in March then anyone could have declared over the internet from that time onwards, since the facility to declare over the internet was in place.
Your orginal comment was simply a gripe and btw I was not defending Skatteverket, as I am in the same boat of having to pay high taxes but I will stand by my point and say YES people do leave things late, me included and it seems some other 444,999 were doing the same thing as me.
No I do not know if the SQL server can handle that much pressure and quite obviously it could not. But that is not the point. Maybe if more had declared earlier then this would not have happened.

I think your own response quoted above says it all.
I do not want to have bad words with one of the "Reverred names" that hangs around the local (you do seem to comment on most things that are reported in the local) and you probably are a very nice guy but what are talking about. You last comment makes no real sense and you are cutting two bits of my comment into one to make what point, pray tell.

I continue to be unable to submit my declaration via the website today.
I wish some of us in the west will be reasoning in similar direction when it comes to issues concerning other people ( especially the so called third world) instead of rushing to the conclusion of condemnation even when there is no decent reason to do so.
