Liberal MP: Legalize prostitution

Published: 8 May 10 13:02 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/26532/20100508/

Liberal Party member of parliament Camilla Lindberg has argued that Sweden should legalize prostitution and provide greater social security for practitioners of the "oldest profession".

The controversial parliamentarian said she hoped her vocal stance would spark debate. Best known for her opposition to a high profile surveillance law, Lindberg said Swedish laws permitting the sale of sex but forbidding its purchase had failed to protect prostitutes.

Speaking to local newspaper Borlänge Tidning, Lindberg said prostitutes should be given full access to Sweden's unemployment insurance and pension systems.

"Prostitution has existed for thousands of years. How can we help people living with this? They too are part of our society. People should be secure in society and feel that they belong," she told the newspaper.

Lindberg said it had become taboo to question Sweden's prostitution laws.

"What one really wants to get at is trafficking, which is a completely different thing to prostitution. The two are often mixed up. One shouldn't confuse trafficking with a 40-year-old woman who has chosen to sell her body, or a 40-year-old man who has made that choice," she told Borlänge Tidning.

Lindberg said she could conceive of prostitutes plying their trade in legal brothels, while stressing that the fight against sex trafficking remained vitally important.

What has triggered this article?
13:47 May 8, 2010 by DamnImmigrant
ZIRCON - It is an election year.

I totally agree that prostitution should be legalized and controlled. Eliminate the sex trafficking and organized crime aspect. Tax the profession! Make it safer!
13:53 May 8, 2010 by peropaco
I thought is was already legal.. So what about the goldiggers? arent they prostitutes?
14:44 May 8, 2010 by DamnImmigrant
PEROPACO - it is crazy isn't it.

In Sweden, it IS legal to sell your body so therefore it IS legal - Unfortunately it is illegal to pay for it so it is also illegal.

Maybe they just want to legalize the buying of it to go along with the legal sales.

What has triggered this article?

Unsatiable appetite for tax revenue. Same ruse, calling for safety.

i love these fake leftish parties. the left party is pushing for a 6 hour day work week and the liberals are pushing for legalizing prostitution? genious. lazy horny voters.
16:53 May 8, 2010 by iona
I wish they legalized it 50 years ago when I would have been interested

Tax the dead as well.
18:13 May 8, 2010 by DamnImmigrant
@zircon - "Tax the dead as well"

I thought they already did that.

Now if we could just get drugs legalized and out of the hands of organized crime - we could see a nice tax boost from there as well.

Contrary to what this article says, prostitution is not thousands of years old - IT IS MILLIONS of years old. It is even seen in the other ape cultures!
18:52 May 8, 2010 by StuartM
The Liberals are a bunch of right-wing libertarians who will always put the freedom of the powerful first, in this case the freedom of men to abuse and exploit women. Sweden has set a good example with its law criminalising paying for sex and I hope most other politicians will see sense and not fall for the pro-patriarchal propaganda of those who see prostitution as something natural and acceptable. Because it is no more so than slavery is.
19:06 May 8, 2010 by izbz
@peropaco

From what I see, it seems to be legal for the seller and illegal for the buyer...LOL
19:32 May 8, 2010 by Lukestar1991
@StuartM

Exactly. I couldnt agree with you more.
21:06 May 8, 2010 by geekgirl
So what happens when the seller (legally) sells to a buyer (illegally buying) and a bust occurs? The buyer gets arrested, and the seller goes home free?
22:21 May 8, 2010 by someoneonthenet
@geekgirl

Yes, It is not the best system but at least it tries to protect vulnerable people (prostitutes) from abuse.

This is a very sexist legal setup, boiled down it is this: It is legal to be a woman but illegal to be a man! (well mostly anyhow, you know what I mean)

my thoughts are have you ever met a woman who has not used sexuality for gain in any way (maybe a nun) and have you ever met a man who has not paid (in some way at least) for sex!! (or even the thought of it, huge business people).

Most people I know pay a very high price for sex (it could be said they pay everything) Prostitution is in fact the cheaper (both ways) option by far!

I have never seen a punter buy a pro a house or car or shoes directly yet!

the whole setup smells bad !

btw I have never and never will use this type of service personally I much rather love than sex (I just have to find a lady who is this way tuned also)

I think prostitution is fine. I also agree like the fact that they are trying to educate the electorate that trafficking is a very different issue that is easily conflated with prostitution in this era of political correctness.

There is nothing wrong with prostitution. Make it a safe working environment with regulations just like every other occupation.
10:39 May 9, 2010 by Mike #1986
I say bring it...what a service just like home grab the telephone book and make a booking and they come knocking on your door...

just beautiful...
11:40 May 9, 2010 by villjobba
"Its legal to sell ...but illegal to buy"....what an inherently contradictory legislation any way! I have never understood its logic! Scrap it!
12:19 May 9, 2010 by locaxy
Question is, why was it made illegal in the first place?

It derives to some extent from religious ethics, but was recently framed from a "feminist" perspective. As there is no victim in the story, the anti-prostitution crowd links it to forced prostitution. What they don't seem to grasp, is that forced labor is illegal in the first place. Because of their unwillingness to acknowledge this, Sweden resorted to a contradictory legislation, analogous to the so-called "tolerance" policy of some states vis-a-vis drugs.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is rational and objective logic.

Look at the StuartM's post where he says that the pro-legalization "a bunch of right-wing libertarians who will always put the freedom of the powerful first". This is a mere ad-hominem attack wrapped in a Guilt by Association fallacy. Rational minds would laugh at this.

What part of NO don't you understand Lindberg? No. No. No. This is wrong! What is it with these crackpot Liberals and their morally inverted values? Or are they mental midgets? By trumpeting prostitution she is showing contempt for traditional Nordic and Christian values. The torrential crime wave that Sweden is in the middle of would only get worse. If you think that "trafficking" is bad now with all these eastern european street walkers plying their trade, wait until you legalize it! Sodom and Gomorrah does not even begin to describe the deluge of whores and male prostitutes illegally sneaking accross the Öresund Bridge. Stop Lindberg now!
15:21 May 9, 2010 by YankeeViking
Why not legalize it and make some tax money off of it? It is no different then a normal Gold Digging woman, but now they can tax them, as they should.....
15:23 May 9, 2010 by Decedo
It's actually a good idea. There isn't a better way of controlling it then formally regulating it. Make it legal and it'll take the pimps, drug addiction, under-age prostitutes, and STD's out of the equation. To please all the bible-thumpers, maybe they can make special red-light areas.
15:35 May 9, 2010 by conboy
Good suggestion all for it ...!
16:09 May 9, 2010 by zircon
Most of Swedish females, especially in High Office, are pricks.
16:41 May 9, 2010 by Lukestar1991
Anyone who justifies prostitution in any shape or form is not a human being.
02:07 May 10, 2010 by DamnImmigrant
@Roger O. Thornhill - "What has triggered this article? Unsatiable appetite for tax revenue. Same ruse, calling for safety."

All businesses are taxed so how would legalizing and taxing this one be "Unsatiable"? It is illegal now and the people involved in it are NOT safe for the very reason that it is illegal. Make it legal and you will make it safer.

@StuartM - "The Liberals ... the freedom of men to abuse and exploit women ... the pro-patriarchal propaganda ... it is no more so than slavery is."

Interesting how this is a liberal idea - you SEXIST you! There are MALE and FEMALE prostitutes! Legalizing prostitution is about BUSINESS! Keeping it illegal is what creates the slavery! As hard as it is for you to understand - there are people out there who WANT to have sex and get paid for it! You would deny them this right because you do not want them exploited or is there some moral ground you are championing?

@bbeynch - "...What is it with these crackpot Liberals and their morally inverted values? ... Christian values. ... you think that "trafficking" is bad now ... wait until you legalize it ... of whores and male prostitutes illegally sneaking..."

The morally inverted Christian values are showing here. Keep it illegal so that we can keep these prostitutes enslaved! Keep it dirty and unregulated and directly connected to organized crime so that "our" holier than thou moral standards can be substantiated!

Interesting the SEXISM being shown here too! "Whores and male prostitutes" - like a male prostitute is not a whore?

By legalizing it you will cut DOWN on disease and do away with the need for the organized crime. It will be practiced by people who WANT to do it! They will do it in a safe and protected environment.

BBEYNCH, why would legalizing it increase crime? Anyone "illegally sneaking in" WILL NOT be able to get a license to be a prostitute? So why "sneak in"? Just apply for a work permit and go through the application process and the required training courses. You have not thought through what legalizing means to the safety of the prostitutes and to society in general.
09:40 May 10, 2010 by Kronaboy
Yeah why not makes scene to legalise prostitution on grounds of health, social welfare, tax etc..... However, this has to be followed by strict legal enforcement otherwise we end up with situation like Netherlands were people (including children) are illegally trafficked for the sex trade, because they are easier to control and manipulate.
10:25 May 10, 2010 by DAVID T
They get my vote
12:23 May 10, 2010 by Kronaboy
@DAVID T

course you would, judging from half the S**t you write on this site you'd have to pay for it.
12:39 May 10, 2010 by unforgiven
Finally....
13:20 May 10, 2010 by dammitman
Sex with a prostitute is an entirely hollow and unfulfilling experience; it is physical gratification with no emotional connection. Now if parliament wants to legalise and regulate the export of Swedish women for marriage, sign me up! Swedish women are the most beautiful in the world, everyone knows that.
19:17 May 10, 2010 by Kronaboy
@dammitman

I'm gona have to go with the Spanish, it's that Gypsy, European North Africa mix gives it a bit of extra spice.
23:02 May 10, 2010 by silly t
100% in support of this. this would eliminate the tax money government is loosing the the prostitution black market....increase money for socials...everyone benefits.

at least it is better than legalizing homosexuality.
09:44 May 11, 2010 by Rebel
Yeah, legalize it and create a government agency to regulate it -- no better way for the Swedes to destroy prostitution.
12:09 May 11, 2010 by DAVID T
@Kronaboy what was it that actually got to you my pin headed friend - you should call yourself kronarentboy :-) here's a kiss foy you haha
