Police officers at a station in southern Sweden have been criticised by the Chancellor of Justice (Justitiekanslern, JK) after they forced a 16-year-old girl to strip naked.

The Chancellor, one of Sweden's most senior law officers, slammed the officers in Lund for routinely forcing young people in their custody to strip, and also noted the lack of documentation regarding the case.

The teenager was at a party in Lomma, near Lund, which was raided by the police in February last year. She was tired and had fallen asleep when the police came to the apartment. Because they suspected that she had taken drugs, they took her to the police station.

At the station, the police forced the girl to strip naked. In the room, there were two female police officers, but there was a glass window in the door into which all who passed by could look. According to the girl, several male police officers were outside.

She then provided urine samples, which showed that she had not taken drugs, which she was under suspicion for.

She was offended by by her treatment and reported the matter to the Chancellor of Justice.

"The Chancellor of Justice has questioned why she had to undress completely naked and the fact that it was carried out in a room where other people could observe her through a pane of glass in the door to the room," wrote JK administrators Anna Skarhed and Katarina Berglund Siegbahn in their ruling. "If there was a suspicion of drug possession, that would have warranted a physical search in the form of a clothing inspection."

They added, "Undressing more or less was routine when it came to suspicion of minor drug offenses. The Chancellor of Justice has reason to believe that this has happened in this case. The Chancellor assumes that the police authority in Skåne will review its procedures with regard to physical inspections and body searches for minor drug offenses if it has not already done so."

Skåne police reported that the clear glass pane has since been replaced by frosted glass.

A preliminary investigation of misconduct began after the girl reported the treatment. The girl, however, changed her mind and asked that the case be closed.

"In this case, two colleagues did not follow the right procedures," Skåne police general counsel Mårten Unbeck told The Local. "It will not be necessary to change normal procedures. I have to read the JK decision first. We did wrong in this case. We don't normally do this."

I could understand strip searches for serious offences, in fact I would expect it. Stepping aside the obvious concerns raised above this a serious waste of my hard earned taxes, I mean haven't they got anything better do than to search every pot smoking student in Lund?

Could any body tell me whats the definition of ethics, morality and respect in sweden and what is used as a reference for these aspects?

well it's only what would happen if she got stopped at an airport - the cops had a reason to raid the party and she could have had drugs uo her ass

That's what x-rays are for. Besides, if this extreme type of search was conducted (I mean body cavity search) then it must be done by a doctor and in privacy. This is an outrage.

@DAVID T

She wasn't at an A/Port, besides the whole point of creating specialist police divisions Such as Area Drugs operating out of Leyton (who by the way is so corrupt that they are probably responsible half the Heroin supplied on the streets of North London) is to specifically target the major suppliers who should be striped searched; even then such searches on juveniles can only be carried out in the presences of a responsible adult.

Oh dear!! another infringement of personal integrity, next they'll be wanting to using cameras to catch criminals.

God forbid can't have that can we, making it easier to catch criminals & lawbreakers & not forgetting those law abiding leaches in higher education.

@ karex and kronabi - I would much rather have a strip search than an x-ray and it is quite concievable that a suspect could well hide their stash were the sun don't shine - my great Aunt who was 89 had a cavity search at the airport and she just said well that's how it is these days. I repeat the cops had a reason to go there and what was she doing falling asleep in the middle of a party - Damn right they should have checked her out
13:59 May 19, 2010 by Streja
David T, she was innocent and veyr young. They forced her to undress where grown men could see her. Was that good in your book?
18:50 May 19, 2010 by locaxy
Consequence of the "war on drugs". These idiots treat herb ingestors as criminals.
22:16 May 19, 2010 by DAVID T
@ Streja - on this occasion she was innocent but the police must have had a reason to raid the party - so what's a young girl doing hanging around with people that use drugs - if you play with fire you will get burnt
09:35 May 20, 2010 by Rebel
Okay...so suspicion of minor drug offenses leads to undressing people. Wonder if most people who are suspects in these cases are young teens.
10:51 May 20, 2010 by J Jack
I suspect the two female officers of minor drug possession and therefore order them to strip naked behind a glass panel. I'm sure I won't look.
12:11 May 20, 2010 by Kronaboy
@Rebel

Heavens above are you suggesting our respectable constabulary are choosing to strip search young buxom female teenagers, over dirty old drug addicted tramps with long beards?????
19:04 July 1, 2010 by Raiha
@ David T

How ridiculous your comments are. She could have had drugs in her anal cavity? Are people really that stupid? NO-ONE hides their stash there unless they're packing through airports. You think people at parties are "look, if you're not gonna drop that E now or smoke that scoob, shove it up your ass for safe keeping in case we get raided by the cops?" LMFAO.

Oh and falling asleep at a party - serious criminal behaviour that is. That would suggest to me that she was the only one at the party NOT on drugs.

I could understand the strip search if her urine sample came back positive. To that end they would follow the same procedure as customs. The strip search is to look for needle marks not just to conduct a cavity search. But stripping a 16 year old girl because she was asleep at a party is F-ing ridiculous, over zealous and just plain wrong. Don't get me started on the lack of privacy. Disgusting. Bet the cops got off on that one.
