Swedish abortions decline in 2009: report

The number of abortions performed in Sweden fell in 2009, for the first time in five years, new statistics from the National Board of Health and Welfare show.

"Since 2004, the number of abortions have increased each year, but last year, the trend reversed," said statistician Tsegalem Muzullo in a statement. "Even teenage abortions fell sharply."

A total of 37,524 abortions were performed last year, over 2 percent lower than the 38,053 in 2008. Among teenagers, abortions declined by 7.8 percent to 22.5 abortions per 1,000 teenage girls compared with 24.4 the previous year.

A total of 25 percent of known pregnancies ended in an abortion last year. Among teenagers, 80 percent of known pregnancies were aborted.

The abortion rate is highest in Stockholm and Gothenburg and lowest in Blekinge, Kronoberg and Jönköping counties. Sweden has the highest abortion rate in the Nordic countries, while Finland has the lowest.

"We can see that regional disparities are large," said Muzullo. "The figures are also high in Gotland, but we have to consider that the population base is very small."

Abortion is legal until the 18th week of pregnancy. After that, an abortion is only permitted after a review by the board if it is deemed necessary for serious medical reasons. These late abortions constitute only 1 percent of the total, while 78 percent of abortions took place before the end of the ninth week of pregnancy.

"Medical abortions induced by the woman taking pills continue to grow," added Muzollo. "They now account for nearly 86 percent of all abortions that occur before the ninth week of pregnancy."

The number of people who are in their late teens and early 20s has dropped as well. Perhaps this explains it. Doubt it has anything to do with greater morality in Sweden.

decrease the price of condoms, abortions will be even less

I'm glad abortion is legal here. I'm also glad that it is decreasing.

If the overall number of pregnancies reduced, it would affect the abortion rate. Would have been a bit more enlightening if a comparison was made with the number of pregnancies.

What do the main political parties say about abortion?

What do the Swedish Churches say?

And what do the mosques say?

About "coitus interruptus" the Prophet of Islam (S.A. W.) said that those who are destined to be born will be born, anyway.

Fact is: Sweden is the best country in the world when it comes to having babies.

The figure given is still terrifying. The abortions must be due to some very extenuating circumstances and at this point we must say thanks to the Catholic Church for putting up moral opposition to the idea of terminating the lives of babies, before they are born - because that's mostly murder.

In Britain a row about an advertisement about Abortions has just kicked off and we'll be hearing more about that in the weeks ahead:

If the rest of the world practiced abortion as well, perhaps we could could stem the world population growth and all the contingent problems associated therewith.

What a hideous suggestion!

Of course there are the devils who deny the Holocaust - and the real arithmetic of the Holocaust - so may Jews alive in Europe before it started and by 1945 two thirds of European Jewry had been exterminated.

So, you too ought to know the value of - indeed the sacredness of life, of babies of the human species even before they are born, and the meaning of the Biblical "be fruitful and multiply" because if your parents had followed the recommendation you have just made, or had used a condom, then you would probably not be a part of your own problem or a world problem, as you view it today. I think that you are a gift to the world.

One of the Almighty's Ten Commandments is "Thou shalt not kill "

"Kill", here means murder - thou shalt not murder and suicide is not to be recommended either.

Then there is the question of euthanasia which I suppose we will be discussing here, at a later date, if we are still here, alive, free and able to discuss

I asked Pa Google "What does Judaism say about abortion?"
