Swedish unemployment rises in April

Unemployment in Sweden climbed in April to 9.8 percent of the workforce with 483,000 registered job-seekers, exceeding expectations and up 80,000 on the corresponding month of 2009, a new report shows.

The number aged 15-74-years-old and engaged in gainful employment amounted to 4,465,000 in April, showing no statistical change on last April.

In April 2009 unemployment amounted to 8.3 percent of the workforce with the April 2010 monthly change indicating that unemployment has not yet peaked, the report from Statistics Sweden (SCB) shows.

"Unemployment, both in the number of unemployed and as a share of the workforce, is still increasing," SCB writes.

For employment indicators the figures are however showing a slight positive trend, especially among men.

"Unemployment is climbing faster than expected. The employment forecast is broadly in line with what we had expected. This can indicate that the unemployment figure climbed as a result of temporary effects," said SEB analyst Olle Holmgren.

Holmgren explained that the unexpectedly high unemployment figure could be as a result of the number of full time students who are looking for work over the summer.

"It seems that a large part of the increase in unemployment is due to full-time students, who are looking for summer jobs. This can have a tendency to significantly impact the monthly figures, he added.

The strong stock market reaction in morning trading on Tuesday, with tumbling krona and interest rates, is explained by Olle Holmgren to have deeper lying causes and is not directly related to the unemployment figures.

"The market has started to question the global recovery. The release of another figure which further supports this pushes the market down," he said.

The Social Democrat economic affairs spokesperson, Thomas Östros, has called the figures worrying, and argued that it indicates that the government's policies are not working.

"It was a major and decisive mistake of the government to present a spring budget without any stimulating measures. This is a government which has abdicated its responsibility," said Östros, who predicted that this would be a key issue in the September general election.

Not sure what it says about the government's policies. As a general point though, policies that are intended to benefit business don't necessarily create jobs. A successful business is based on a high gearing of company earnings to wages. Put more simply the fewer that are employed and the lower the wages the better as long as customers still buy the products. Don't necessarily equate business friendly politics to jobs. Margaret Thatcher was extremely pro-business but unemployments rocketed until they recalculates the figures based on those eligible for benefits rather than those without work - there's a massive difference in the UK ~5million in fact.

Not surprisingly since running proper HR departments does not exist in businesses in Sweden neither accepting English resumes.
12:52 May 25, 2010 by calebian22
Why would Swedish businesses look favorably on an applicant who is too lazy to translate their CV to Swedish? Unless English is a requirement for the job there is no reason to accept English CV's. Learn Swedish.

We all have to know Swedish if we are living in Sweden, that is out of the question.

Still we have to admit that Swedish human resources does not exist at all.

The top three comments above represent insincere, freedom cutting, insiduous, tax increasing leftism. The way to solve the unemployment situtaion in Sweden is definitely NOT to permit the useless socialist riff-raff steer the Swedish economy again. They've already proven what they stand for with State control of every aspect of our lives. Send Mona a clear message at the ballot box in september!

Still the lone nazi voice crying in the wilderness.

Get a life or better still get out of Sweden

@Methven: You're falling right into my trap and prove an important point. Why is it that you, and some other elements hostile to a traditional Swedish society always yell "nazis" as a counter argument. Anyone you do not agree with is an instant "nazi". Is "nazi" your only argument? What other words have you learned?

And with these STATISTICS I dont see why one would like to BRING IN MORE IMMIGRANTS when the already existing population has failed to translate into economics. How on earth are you gonna sustain the thousands of UNEDUCATED BUNCH that comes in? let alone educating them?

More strategic planning and opportunity creations should be availed for the already existing to create more taxes for the NATION.

This is all about faltering global recovery and double-dip recession that many predicted. This has nothing to do with who is currently in power locally. Too bad, because in this unstable climate, it's essentially impossible to judge anybody's policies based on evidence. Shame on economics for being such a primitive science. We steer our entire societies based on "wisdom" that has less empirical support, and has undergone less testing than washing powder or toilet paper.

Having said that without Norway there'd be another 150,000 or so on that total.

Every one who is jobless should come to Gavle! I have a small business here and have called the job centre TWICE to say I have a vacancy AND they dont even call back when the said they would. Unemploymet, any wonder.

A friend here in Sweden complained about how could you compete with a competitor business in china where you can at any time of the day or night call and some one always answer the phone, he said how are we suppose to complete with that? Thats called working and good customer service...

Obviously an idea from the loony lefties, or should I say the closet commies!

It was stated only the other day that the retirement of "40 talisterna" would create 1.3 millions jobs. Somebody's got their commie pants in a twist.

Wouldn't be suprised if they've sneaked in 1.7 million Albanians just to change the numbers.

It's all about GROUPTHINK. Source of strength in the past, but a source of weakness under current conditions.

Without naming post names, it seems there are a few here who will go down fighting reality to the end. Sad.
