Vilks invited to complete Uppsala lecture

Uppsala University has invited artist Lars Vilks to speak again after his lecture on May 11th was interrupted when he was attacked.

The university's Department of Philosophy has asked Vilks to return to complete his lecture provided that the university's security personnel, in consultation with the police, believes that it can take place in an orderly manner.

"It is a wise decision by the department," Rector Anders Hallberg said in a statement. "It is obvious that he may complete his lecture."

At the lecture, Vilks showed a movie with naked gay men wearing masks representing the prophet Muhammad. Three people were arrested, but released after the attack under investigation by police.

"Violence and intimidation will not silence people at the university or elsewhere in society," the Department of Philosophy's director of studies Rysiek Sliwinski said in a statement.

Vilks has accepted the invitation, Sliwinski added.

The lecture on freedom of expression and art will be held in the fall provided that it can take place in an orderly manner. The location, time and format have not yet been determined. A new safety assessment will be made in consultation with the police.

Following the attack at the lecture, Vilks' house in the village of Nyhamnsläge in southern Sweden was attacked with gasoline-filled plastic bottles. A window in the house was smashed and a curtain was set on fire.

The artist's personal website was also hacked, with an Islamic group calling itself Al Qataari claiming responsibility for the attack.

Vilks courted global attention in 2007 when the Swedish regional daily Nerikes Allehanda published his satirical cartoon depicting Muhammad as a dog to illustrate an editorial on the importance of freedom of expression.

The cartoon prompted protests by Muslims in the town of Örebro in central Sweden, where the newspaper is based, while Egypt, Iran and Pakistan made formal complaints.

An Al-Qaeda front organisation then offered $100,000 to anyone who murdered Vilks - with an extra $50,000 if his throat was slit - and $50,000 for the death of Nerikes Allehanda editor-in-chief Ulf Johansson.

The protests in Sweden echoed the uproar in Denmark caused by the publication in September 2005 of 12 drawings focused on Islam, including one showing the prophet Muhammad with a turban in the shape of a bomb.

In March, American citizen Colleen LaRose, who called herself "JihadJane" in a YouTube video, was charged by US authorities with conspiring to kill Vilks after seven suspected co-plotters were arrested in Ireland.

He's a brave man standing up for free speech, good luck to him, let's hope violent idiots leave him alone.
14:03 May 26, 2010 by peropaco
He is a brave man indeed and I applaud him for that. Unfortunately the violent and murderous garbage are also incessantly relentless in their desire to terminate his existence.

A person who looks mentally ill and who takes picture with Axe is invited to deliver his false and hate clip. WOW I think University could not find any Academic person in Sweden to invite someone who shows someone else clip. it is very sick to compare this with freedom of speech eeeqqq al most vomiting.
15:12 May 26, 2010 by truthworthy
This is very arrogant decision, inviting someone who incites hate to a respected university is unacceptable. freedom to insult and freedom of speech are two different things.
15:50 May 26, 2010 by calebian22
Lars- you are a terrible artist but not being intimidated by thugs is admirable.

Calebian22

it is not about being scared or things like that, It is the matter of respect and insult and it is true if you hurt someone they would hurt you back.

People are doing crazy things in the name of Freedom, One day guys would fk their mom n sisters and would say we have freedom.
17:31 May 26, 2010 by calebian22
An insult is not worthy of death. That is 7th century thinking and typical of the thugs who are targeting Vilks.
17:40 May 26, 2010 by John D.
Vilks is the perfect person to have a lecture on freedom of expression and art.

And for you ignorant immigrants that don't agree with it and are offended. My advice to you is to get a one way ticket to the country you are from and don't come back to Sweden.

In Swedish culture you are free to express yourself this way, even if it offends someone. If you don't like the Swedish Culture kindly leave.
17:53 May 26, 2010 by Avidror
How can be said that Vilks invites people to hate? Please read his explanation about his actions:

"Lars Vilks took part on Tuesday evening in a seminar in Stockholm organized by the Council of Ex-Muslims of Sweden and the Swedish Humanist Association.

Vilks reminded his audience that the drawing had been meant as a provocation. The art and culture communities in Sweden repeatedly criticize the United States and Israel, he said, whereas Muslim countries are rarely even questioned. The caricature of Muhammad as a 'roundabout dog' was his way of "testing the limits" of art.

'I suppose one could say that from that perspective I have been entirely successful', said Vilks."

@open minded

I remember quite well when the Muslims were all for freedom of speech and all tolerant when an exhibition glorifying suicide bombers took place in sweden. I remember the all tolerant muslims propagading the freedom of expression when holocaust caricature competition took place in Iran.

Somehing tells me that the f… of sisters may come from other place than Europe. They already got cousins covered.

vilkas is guilt
20:04 May 26, 2010 by Twiceshy
I want to just give my two cents on the issue.

IMHO It is not the question of freedom of speech, it is the question of etiquettes and ethics. You can comment on Muhammad and the way he spent his life. But what is the point in depicting him as a dog or a gay?

This seems like a propoganda to provocate Muslims and then to potray them in wrong light. I think the best way to deal with such situations is to ignore (he wouldn't be so much popular then :)
20:13 May 26, 2010 by asian123
he should finish what ever scrap he has. he has that right.

some idiots who are f++king already cousins will oppose.

next thing is sisters and mothers.

Here is solution according to Quran.

"Have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity)." [Quran 73:10]

"Bear, then, with patience, all that they say, and celebrate the praises of thy Lord, before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting." [Quran 50:39]

"Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; but turn away from the ignorant." [Quran 7:199]

In my personal view, Vilk or for that matter any one enjoys "freedom of speech" against Allah(God) or Muhammad(pbuh) according to above mention guideline given in Qurand(pbuh).

And muslims are not instructed in Quran to turn voilent against any such acts. Prophet Muhammad(pbh) were never voilent against the woman who used to throw garge on him, rather he went to ask her health, when she got ill and couldn't throw garbage.
20:49 May 26, 2010 by Trowbridge H. Ford
I shall certainly be there for the complete lecture if and when it takes place, along with a pair of shoes to throw at him if it doesn't improve its content.
21:14 May 26, 2010 by ali_bin_umar
@ Trowbrige ..be careful when you throw shoes at him.Might be police has been instructed this time to shoot the person against any kind of voilent act.
22:22 May 26, 2010 by Trowbridge H. Ford
If his comments are just intended to incite Muslim hatred, the shoes will be on their way whatever the police are instructed to do.
22:58 May 26, 2010 by glamshek
For People who can understand the rules of courtesy.

When God wants to show himself, Prophet[pbuh] is sent, not God himself. When Prophet[pbuh] is thrown garbage upon, Her Daughter comes to rescue her, not Prophet[pbuh] himself. When Muslims are in danger, Prophet[pbuh] raises his hands to pray for them and eventually they succeed. For Example, in 1st war between Muslims and Arab Pagans, 5000 angels were sent down. Ali[a.s] alone killed half of the attckers of all those killed. When Prophet[pbhu] was under siege, in battle of Uhad, Ali[a.s] helped him out. When Prophet[pbuh] invited people to Zoolasheerah, Father of Ali[a.s] Abdul Mutalib[a.s], helped him out. When Ali[a.s] needed help for recognition as Maula[a.s] for the people of all times, Prophet[pbuh] came to rescue in Ghadeer Khum.

This time if there is even one trustworthy guy in Uppsala, you will see the reaction. Lets see who comes up this time.
23:02 May 26, 2010 by asian123
Trowbridge H. Ford

why only muslims?

critisizing religion is very common in western countries.

if you dont like it do one thing.

you are not at all welcome here. so go to arlanda and buy a ticket to home never come back.
23:31 May 26, 2010 by ali_bin_umar
@glamshek

I don't know what you expect from that "trustworthy" guy but the book of guidance(Quran) is very clear as quoted in my comment# 14.

The diginified way to deal with this situation is one should distance himself/herself from him(Vilks) and of course "NO VOILENCE".
00:01 May 27, 2010 by frankly.speaking
Frankly speaking If some one get hurt with any act no one should do that.

The act done by Vilks is just a stupid act this guy needs cheap popularity he should be porn star. he is in wrong field man.

To Open Minded #3,

Aside from an almost incomprehensible note, your name does not appear to be consistent with your sentiments.

To wit::

...it is very sick to compare this with freedom of speech eeeqqq al most vomiting"

Maybe change your name? I think "Close Minded" might work.

Peace be with you and all your shoe throwing brethren. May they come bare footed (but please bathe first)

I think this so-called artist is nothing more than a liar, hypocrite and liar.

He is talking about morality and at the same time, he supports the criminal state of Israel that illegally occupies Palestine and massacre and uproots its people. How can we believe him, then when talking about morality? Lars was the one who called the Israeli apartheid and occupational state as ''civilized state''

He is also hypocrite. In one hand, he advocates freedom of speech, and in another, he criticized reporting the newspaper Aftonbladet for the Israeli harvesting Palestinian organs. The harvesting organ was a true story, admitted by Israel and now this criminal Lars criticizing the publishing!!!

He talks about freedom of speech but he is against the holocaust denial!!!!!

I completely despise this Muslim-hater and ''cultural criminal''.
09:42 May 27, 2010 by glamshek
@ali-bin-umar

Allah made Ali[a.s] Maula because nobody could dare do any stupidity in front of Ali[a.s] against the Prophet[pbuh]. As a result, Ali[a.s] becomes Maula[a.s].

I respect what you said regarding non-violence but History adored people like Ali[a.s] who took action when it 'mattered' and remained calm and patient when it was about his 'own self'.

If anyone can shut his mouth, this is the time. When Umar ibn-e-Abdawad was challenging upon the faithful in 'Khandaq', no one could answer except Ali[a.s]. Later on Prophet[pbuh] gave a historic statement regarding that.

''Ali (A.S.)'s one stroke at Khandaq is superior to the devotional prayers of both the worlds."

Lets see.
15:49 May 27, 2010 by travels
What is the need to write the -pbuh-, over and over again, Muhammad(pbuh) or Prophet[pbuh] or Qurand(pbuh)?, the pbuh seems to be: peace be upon him. Can't you just write Muhammad or Prophet or Quran without the pbuh??. Are you praying or blogging?. And what is the (a.s.) in Ali[a.s] or Maula[a.s]??
17:46 May 27, 2010 by ali_bin_umar
@travels.. You can write Muhammad or what ever, but I will write Abu al-Qasim Muhammad Ibn Abd Allah Ibn Abd al-Muttalib Ibn Hashim ( Peace be upon him). And stop dictating others what to do do.
17:57 May 27, 2010 by Jannik
Freedom of expression is definetely under attack these days. Muslims and their multicultural allies demand "respect", and threaten with violence if respect is not shown.

But why should one give special treatment to muslims? All other religions, especially christianity, are critizised on a regular basis in the western countries. The same goes for political ideologies and other convictions.

The message to muslims should be clear; if you dont like critique and satire of your faith, then leave Sweden and move to some muslim country which is more accomodating to your beliefs.

if he dares to insult muslims on the pretext of freedom of speech, why dont give muslims the freedom to retaliate. Let him face the music and his life will be miserable due his own arrogance.
06:35 December 24, 2010 by No Haram Done
Mr. Vilks, you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for standing up to ALL Islamic extremists!

Here in the States I'm trying to get America to:

CIRCLE YOUR CALENDER FOR MAY 20, 2011

Let's make it official: DRAW MOHAMMED DAY!!!!

Draw a picture (ANYTHING YA WANT!) of that dirty, paedo/gigolo and mail it to your local newspaper and the Hamas-linked Muslim organization "Counsel on American-Islamic Relations" to let them know that they are CRIMINALS and TERRORISTS for not standing up for freedom of speech after former Seattle cartoonist Molly Norris was forced to go into hiding for her life last spring after suggesting we have such a contest!

It's Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses" all over again!

By the way, look up the actual "Satanic verses" in the Qu'ran, as they really show that this "book" (& Mohammed) are both infernally inspired! Here they are:

THE SATANIC VERSES:

"Then God sent down the revelation.

'By the star when it sets!

Your companion has not erred or gone astray, and does not speak from mere fancy...'

[Q.53:1] When he reached God's words, "Have you seen al-Laat and al-'Uzzaa and Manaat, the third, the other?'

[Q.53:19-20] Satan cast upon his tongue, because of what he had pondered in himself and longed to bring to his people, 'These are the high-flying cranes and their intercession is to be hoped for.'

When the other members of the Quraysh tribe heard that, they rejoiced...."

Read more when you have the opportunity!

So, who'd want to be a part of a religion founded by a prophet that would WILLINGLY work with old Shaitan (the Arabic word for Satan/the Devil/old Scratch)???

Face it, ALL Muslims are Islam's first, SADDEST and VILEST victims!

When a Muslim says "You're ignorant and you're taking the Qu'ran's verses out of context!", they're LYING as they KNOW about Qu'ranic "ABROGATION", which means the EARLIER, kinder, gentler verses Mohammed received from Allah in Mecca are SUPERCEDED by the LATER, murderous, genocidal, verses he received from Allah in Medina!
