Sweden calls on Israel to clarify aid convoy attack

Sweden's foreign minister Carl Bildt has summoned the Israeli ambassador to explain reports that Israeli armed forces have boarded the Freedom Flottila ships heading to Gaza, killing at least ten people.

"We want a clarification over what has happened," Carl Bildt said to Sveriges Radio P1 over the reports that the ships belonging to the "Ship to Gaza" convoy, carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza strip, had been boarded by Israeli military forces.

"We know that there are Swedes on some of the ships and we want to know what has happened to them. There appears no reason to question media reports that a Turkish vessel has been boarded, that a fire fight occurred and that people have been killed," Bildt said.

The flotilla of ships, carrying a reported 600 people from around 50 different nations, left Cyprus on Sunday evening and was due to arrive close to Gaza on Monday morning. The convoy, loaded with 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid, was intercepted in international waters, 65 kilometres off the Gaza coast, by Israeli warships and helicopters.

A live feed broadcast from a Turkish registered ship in the convoy shows Israeli forces boarding the ship and opening fire at around 8pm. Israeli military sources have confirmed ten dead, but other reports indicate that the death toll could be as high as nineteen, with dozens more injured.

Eleven Swedes are participating in the aid convoy including the author Henning Mankell, theologian Ulf Carmesund, Jewish artist and musician Dror Feiler and Swedish Green Party MP Mehmet Kaplan.

Swedish Green Party leader Peter Eriksson said that they had lost contact with Kaplan at around 5pm expressed concern over his fate in what he described as a completely legitimate and reasonable non-violent protest.

"If Israel has used extensive violence and killed people then it has to be seen as very serious. And it is important that there are strong reactions from both Sweden and other countries," Eriksson told news agency TT

The convoy was organised by activists from a slew of countries to protest the continued isolation of Gaza and to help arrest a deteriorating humanitarian situation.

Mikael Löfgren at Ship to Gaza Sweden has confirmed that all the ships in the flotilla have been boarded, including the Swedish ship Sofia.

"We received a call from Dror Feiler, who was on board our boat Sofia, at 4.30am in the morning, and then he heard shots from the ships that were being boarded," he told the TT news agency on Monday adding that the Sofia was boarded 15 minutes later.

Löfgren told the Local on Thursday that the activists were aware of the Israeli government's warnings, and stressed that the project is a peaceful non-violent operation.

"We will not meet violence, with violence," Löfgren said on Thursday.

Israeli military sources however claimed on Monday that their forces were fired upon and that four soldiers were wounded while boarding the Turkish vessel. The report contradicts several recent statements from flotilla organizers who have insisted that none of the six vessels were carrying any weapons.

Israel imposed an economic blockade after the Islamist movement Hamas took power in Gaza in June 2007.

Israel claims that despite the blockade 15,000 tones of humanitarian aid are allowed into Gaza every week, which according to the United Nations is less than a quarter of what is needed.

As the flotilla began its highly publicised voyage towards the Gaza, and before Monday's attacks, the Israeli government has said that it would forward the humanitarian aid supplies on the ships once they had cleared customs.

This was a well orchestrated PR campaign funded by Hamas and its supporters from Sweden, EU to portray Israel as the 7 head beast. Upon boarding the boat, the soldiers were attached and they defended themselves. Now, of course Israel will once again be on the losing end of the media frenzy. It doesn't matter if one or 100 people dies; what's was important here was to show the world the evil of Israel. I say, torpedo the boats. After all, no matter what you do Israel, if a you kill a terrorist who was trying to blow up a kindergarten the world will still be ready to lash their condemnation at you. I am Yisrael chai

This hopefully will be the beginning of the end of the criminal, sick in the head, state of israel.

Even if the israel soldiers were attacked with iron bars, there are 20 different means of defense. Rubber bullets, tear gas...the list goes on. There is NO excuse to kill.

The Israel drops troops armed to the teeth on to an unarmed ship in INTERNATIONAL waters and kills 10 and says that THEY where attacked. NATO, the Chinese and everybody else sends war ships to the gulf to protect shipping from Somali pirates but EXACTLY the same sort of act by Israel is self defence?.

Time to blockade Israel and board every ship going in or out of Israeli ports and see how they like it

The IDF really messed this up. Israel's elite PR representatives have been working the media hard this morning, but even they can't present this in a positive light. Veteran CNN, Sky and BBC journalists are visibly disgusted with them.

I think that's a fair emotion in the circumstances.

What has happened is tragic and could have been avoided, especially if the foolhardy sailors had called the whole thing off - instead of playing heroics.

Soon enough, Carl Bildt will be hollering, "Let my people go!"

This is what the machete-wielding hooligans (pirates) wanted to happen, to provoke this kind of situation and then point an accusing finger at Israel - like children killing their parents and then crying that they are orphans.

The same principle could have been challenged had the " non-violent" decided to fly in the non-violent aid into Gaza - violating Israeli airspace in doing so.

Predictably the aid carrier in the air would have either, been escorted to a safe landing place by the Israeli airforce or, alternatively, shot down.

The purpose in boarding the ships was to escort them to safety. That the Israelis were met with violent resistance from hooligans armed with machetes and knives is no surprise because I heard on al-Jazeera that they ( the hooligans) were not going to be conducted to an Israeli port, without resistance.

As peropaco wrote at the beginning of that thread, similar action would be expected by South Korea - should the North enter their peaceful waters and refuse to comply with orders in a vain attempt at breaking an embargo - even after being warned about the course of action that would be the inevitable consequence

In a Press conference with the Israeli deputy prime minister, he was asked if the Israeli occupational forces has any proof that any of the ships has weapons. He replied that " we are still doing investigations and he can't provide anything until these are completed"

However at the same time, they attacked the ships and killed tens of people even though he himself was stupid to say that things are still under investigation.

Apart from being a criminal act against humanitarian aids, Israeli forces attacked the ships in International water where they have no right to do so.

What do get? condemnations!!! When is the world going to protect freedom in Palestine and stop Israeli from their ugly occupation!!!!

What about just to stop pumping in billions of dollars of subsidies every year. I understand why the west gives Israel huge sums of money and goods every year, but the least they can do is telling them to behave like civilized people-

Of course not. However Israel exists because the US provides it with enough military hardware and aid to survive. It's assets in terms of natural resources etc. aren't adequate to allow it to alienate itself from the rest of that part of the world and survive - that's what the discussion is actually about. The US at the moment props it up. Obama has been losing patience though and he simply needs the guts to turn the taps off slowly and pressure a change in attitude. This isn't an anti-Jewish suggestion because unfortunately Jews worldwide will have to cope with a backlash after incidents this sort. Israel can only protect its own territory but its actions make life harder for Jews, Arabs and Palestinians on a global scale. Furthermore Israel clearly doesn't care about that. The recent incidents in Malmo are just one small example of that.

Two questions:

1. If these activists were indeed 'unarmed' and came on a so-called 'peaceful humanitarian mission' - then what were sticks, bats and knives doing on the ships? Why have they violently stormed the incoming troops with these weapons, and why have they opened live fire on them, with a gun they snatched? Were they really that peaceful?

2. The Israeli Navy told these activists that it welcomes the relief packages sent to Gaza, and that they can simply dock in the port of Ashdod and inspect as their goods are transferred to Gaza through the land crossings. Why have they rejected this simple solution? Clearly this would have accomplished their mission of transferring the goods to Gaza, while avoiding all the violence and bloodshed. Could it be that their mission was not really about providing aid and relief, and much more about making a political point?

Early this morning (May 31) the Israel Navy intercepted the flotilla after the passengers on board ignored Israeli warnings. IDF forces met with severe pre-planned violence from the demonstrators, including use of live fire and light weaponry.

This happened after numerous warnings from Israel and the Israeli Navy that were issued prior to the event. The Israeli Navy requested the ships to redirect toward Ashdod where they would be able to unload their aid supplies which would then be transferred over land after undergoing security inspections.

During the boarding of the ships, demonstrators onboard attacked the IDF Naval personnel with live fire and light weaponry including knives and clubs. Additionally, one of the weapons used was grabbed from an IDF soldier. The demonstrators had clearly prepared their weapons in advance for this specific purpose.

As a result of this life-threatening and violent activity, naval forces first employed riot dispersal means, and followed by live fire.

According to initial reports, these events resulted in over ten deaths among the demonstrators and numerous injuries. In addition, more than four naval personnel were injured, some from gunfire and some from various other weapons. Two of the soldiers are moderately wounded and the remainder sustained light injuries. All of the injured parties, Israelis and foreigners, are currently being evacuated by helicopter to hospitals in Israel.

Reports from IDF forces at the scene indicate that some of the participants onboard the ships were planning to lynch the forces.

The events are ongoing, and information will be updated as soon as possible. Israeli Naval commander, Vice Admiral Eliezer Marom is overseeing the events.

the ships will be directed to the Ashdod port, while IDF naval forces perform security checks in order to identify the people on board the ships and their equipment.

This IDF naval operation was carried out under orders from the political leadership to prevent the flotilla from reaching the Gaza Strip and breaching the maritime closure.

The boarding of ships in the flotilla followed numerous warnings given to the organizers of the flotilla before leaving their ports as well as while sailing towards the Gaza Strip. In these warnings, it was made clear to the organizers that they could dock in the Ashdod Sea Port and unload the equipment they are carrying in order to deliver it to the Gaza Strip in an orderly manner, following the appropriate security checks. Upon expressing their unwillingness to cooperate and arrive at the port, it was decided upon to board the ships and lead them to Ashdod.

IDF naval personnel encountered severe violence, including use of weaponry prepared in advance in order to attack and to harm them. The forces operated in adherence with operational commands and took all necessary actions in order to avoid violence, but to no avail

The IDF has a long tradition of roughing up uppity aid and human rights workers who dare to stand up to them. Usually they do it in a police or army cell.

This time they stormed a ship in international waters and when the captain asked them to leave, and then tried to force them off his ship, as is his right, they let rip with the Uzis while the media filmed it all.

These people have nuclear weapons. They can't even responsibly handle light machine guns. UN, disarm Israel's nuclear arsenal before they really get mad and mess up with a nuke.

This is all one big show produced by the HAMAS, and we're all spectators who say and do exactly as HAMAS want us to.

The flotilla was organized by IHH - a group with close connections to HAMAS as well as el-quaida.

The only reason the entire thing became violent is that the organizers wanted it to become violent. That's why they has several weapons aboard the ships, and that's why they used those guns.

The fire that was shot first came from the "humanitarian" ship. You'll see proof for it in coming hours.

Israel takes one step closer to a war it can never win. It's rumoured that many of those that were murdered by the Israeli forces were Turkish. It's not a good idea to pick a fight with Turkey, they have a bottomless pit of willing young fighters, very professional & well-equipped Armed Forces, and an unshakeable mental toughness which will see them overrun any kind of resistance that Israel puts up. It would be a one-sided fight. And Israel deserves all that is coming to it for using false passports of "friendly" nations in the Dubai hit.

Looks like the so-called peace flotilla was nothing of the sort. The intention of various organisers and participants was to turn this into a military operation. The goods to be delivered were a distraction and decoy. Cool heads must prevail . I hope and trust that the Israeli leaders and their counterparts in neighbouring countries make the right decisions in the coming hours and days. Hamas should not be calling for an uprising in this current climate. If they want things to spiral out of control they will come off second best.

P.S. For all the anti-Israel people out there, did you know that Israel has been delivering fifteen thousand tonnes of goods every week into Gaza for more than a year now ? Did you know that pistols and knives were at the ready for the boarding party ? Did you know this happened only 17 kms offshore ? Did you also know that recently the daughter of a leading Hamas leader was rushed to Jordan with the help of Israeli physicians ? Did you know that Egypt is building a border wall with the Gaza Strip ? Did you know that the shops in Gaza are overflowing with goods ? Did you know that rockets continue to be fired on the south of Israel from Gaza ?

Israel is ruled by religious fanatics, who believe that God and the US are behind them. They know that Europe is America's rubber stamp whose noise does not go beyond some murmurs and diplomatic pretence.

The more Israel maintains an intransigent position, the more crimes it commits. In the short run it is inconsequential, as the US is behind it. In the long run it will come to bite it, because the world situation might change dramatically, bringing with it breakthroughs in science and technology, changing world balance of power with mass destruction-weapons hitherto unknown to humans, could fall in the hands of its enemies. The US in its own self interest might ditch Israel and try to live as a normal country would, e.g., Scandinavian countries, Switzerland, Brazil, Singapore, and South Africa. This is when Israel will face a real existential threat. (Right now it is Palestinians who are facing existential threat.)

My advice to other Israel's is to rise up and take state power and save Israel from going further into this destructive path.

Can't we instead hope that there won't be further loss of life and try to focus on finding out what has happened rather than trying to use it as political fodder for everyone's ideologies? The Pro-Israeli side will say this is a conspiracy set up to make Israel look bad and that somehow the victim deserves it. The Anti-Israel side will use this overreach as evidence of further atrocities by the government.

Since it's a stalemate of pre-established thought, why don't we instead wait and see what happens as the facts become more apparent?

If the "Humanitarian Aid" boat was heading to the israeli port and cleared by custom, as was required by the israeli government - this wouldn't have happened and the aid would have reached it's destination. Israel cant risk an UNCHECKED "humanitarian" boat going straight to Gaza since in previous attempts weapons used against israelis has been included.

this is an aimed provocation by the so called "humanitarians"...

The fact that the Local opened up this story to comment, tells us something about Swedish media. Clearly The Local must have known that this would give a field day to all islamo-fascists, of which there are hundreds of thousands protected by Sweden, and the great majority of whom are supporting themlselves straight out of the pockets of the Swedish tax payers. These IFs are now free to unleash their sqewed venom, usually backed up by religious/cultural fanaticism in their zeal to turn Sweden into a Nordic califate, parasiting Swedish tax payer funds to achieve this end. Did you know that pistols and knives were at the ready for the boarding party ? Did you know this happened only 17 kms offshore ? I recall the last response of this sort to a media report on Israel - the organ harvesting scandal. The reaction from some then including the Israeli government was that this was an anti-Israeli conspiracy and could not have happened. The Israelis have now charged five people including a retired Israeli general with organ trafficking. They couldn't control their people then and they can't control them now. I'm not expecting many people on this page to accept facts because clearly there are a large number who like to hide from reality or at least view it selectively but it is the media's duty in a democracy to report crimes. First of all, you ignorant kids (you know who you are) should read about religions and learn more before stating Islam is a religion aiming terrorist acts towards other beliefs. I don't belong to any religion and refuse to pick one but still I know that one of the main rules of becoming a muslim is also believing God's other prophets, holy books and angels. If not, that person is not muslim according to their holy book.

Some groups getting paid handsomely by other countries, who are trying to divide people and cause chaos, are only using the name of this religion and unfortunately some other ignorant citizens are following them (same goes for other religions, read history and learn that "terrorism" is not an islamic act). That's the only fact, the fact; it's a board game countries play with money and weapons.

On topic, no matter what the reason is, attacking those ships carrying support to civilians is a fatal mistake and inhuman.

@Mackan2017. Don't drool too much over the supposed 'greatness' of the Turkish armed forces. Outside of bombing Kurd bases in Iraq (sort of like Israel does to Hamas in the Gaza Strip) and killing Greek prisoners on Cyprus, they haven't done much to prove their fighting prowess. Then there is the 'little' problem of the forces having to get through Syria and Lebanon to reach Israel.

To the serial moaners going on about Israel and nuclear weapons: prove they have them before demanding they get rid of them.

The "top secret" minutes of meetings between senior officials from the two countries in 1975 show that South Africa's defence minister, PW Botha, asked for the warheads and Shimon Peres, then Israel's defence minister and now its president, responded by offering them "in three sizes". guys, a lot of things happen in the background which we as ordinary people dont have a whiff of and not everything is published about who did what . The popular media of a particular country only publishes stuff which gathers more readership among its masses...its pure business for them.. So, stop believing propaganda and try to educate yourself on such controversial topics by researching all sides of the story. Muslims, more often than not, are extremely vulnerable to believe propaganda as they never see anything wrong with their brethren.

I find Israel act excessive, killing or aiming to kill has no excuses. Prior reaching to international sea, the ship has the aim to resist the Israeli forces. I mean those incidents would inevitably occur. The very problem is the aid coming from Turkey is not supported by official the Red Crescent of Turkey but a minor group supported by Fetullah Gulen, accepted as a fundementalist threat to Turkish secular system and if you examine the protester, the ones who protest against Israeli (always protesting) have the roots of fundementalism. So, we must evaluate the both sides without a bias. But all in all, Israeli forces should have hesitated such hostility towards others.

Sailing in the direction of the blockade with the intention to break it, is no less breaking the law than the Israel Army already have. It's not a matter of law anymore. It's a matter of common sense. These idiots have made it worse for Gaza and they will no doubt revere their dead fellows as heroes to take the spotlight away from the blood on their hands. Another thing is that as you don't know, Turkey as institutions was neutral towards the conflict btw. Israel and Palestine until 2000s. Then the AKP having a history of fundementalism is in charge and the polarization occurs with government and military forces of Turkey and Israel stuff is one important dispute. As I said in the comment #71, Fetullah Gulen who is in exile in USA supports for AKP possibly wants to help the current governent of AKP to increase the support for the party because it's diminishing due to the rise of social democrats after unification of left wing. So, the very way is to start a conflict with a government, in this case, Israel to feed the hatred and the PM Erdogan has the idea to be active in conflicts so that he can get majority again. The very issue in turkey now is that Israel's act is being tied to kurdish seperatist/terrorist group PKK since today, 7 soldiers were killed near Antakya, a close region to Syria. So, all in all, I think it's a conspiracy against Israel and Israel acted without thinking and now, it has the lower hand.

A ship carrying the flag of a country, is regarded as soil of that country. Therefore attacking it on international waters, consists attack to the respective country. Thus, now Israel can be regarded as attacking Turkey, Sweden and Greece at the same time since the boats the israeli navy boarded on were under these flags.

Plz cornelius can you comment on that as the Isreali Embasy spokesperson?

As in my comments 71 and 77, the plot is set very well done in Turkey, we, here all know that the ships would try to infiltrate and a resistance was expected, as I said, if you want to have a humanitarian aid, where would you ask for this? Red Cross, Red Crescent, Unicef etc. but the ones in the ship, at least the organisators are from a union IHH. IHH is group of people who are supported by Fetullah Gulen who is in exile in USA due to the threat for the secular state of Turkey. The ideas are in charge in Turkey for more than 10 years together with the PM Erdogan. So, it was expected because the party, AKP who has fundementalist roots needs more support since there is a rise in support for social democrats in Turkey. So, Turkey needs some conflicts to gain support that's the reason why the PM plays the Iran card and right now, Israeli conflict binding Israel with PKK (the spokesman of turkish government says so)

A good question. Analysis of the newsreal, and accounts from independant journalists on board give the answer. The mostly Turkish passengers and crew of the Turkish ship put up quite a fight; as they are entitled to do when any ship is attacked by heavily armed pirates in international waters. The IDF boys, used to sniping at civilians from 2 kms away got the worst of it and were about to be tossed into the sea. One was disarmed and shot with his own weapon. Instead of doing the right thing and laying down their weapons to preserve civilian lives (even at the cost of their own), they let rip with high powered machine guns and spayed the decks shooting anyone standing upright. What brave boys these IDF special forces were this morning.

Well done the Turks who showed real courage and got the best of the IDF until the cowards let rip with their Uzis. I look forward to reading about aggressive Turkish naval and air exercises just off Israeli international waters.

This is a PR disaster for Israel. Even the slimy worm tongues representing Israel on the news channels tonight look embarrased. I never thought that was possible. Poor Netanyahu can't even face Obama tomorrow and scuttled home in shame. He's as cowardly as his soldiers.

Israel, and Israelis, seem to have gone rotten from the inside. What a shame, it all started with such vision and hope. Now its just a cowardly shell of what it used to be. What a betrayal of the ideas of the founders.

Firstly Israel has every right to defend herself in International waters, just as the US interdicts narcotics. If this was humanitarian aid, then howcome these peace activists were prepared with weapons and attacked the commandos before they were even given permission to open fire.

This was nothing more than a publicity stunt to make Israel look bad (as usual). This aid would have been delivered by road from Ashdod to Gaza (probably in Volvo Trucks) but they had to exploit the situation and now people are dead and injured. No means no. If Israel is not allowing aid into Gaza, and has attacked this ship in international waters where they hold no jurisdiction, the then the world community, including the UN must enforce sanctions against this country. There is no better way to deliver your message than hitting the country where it hurts the most, FINANCIALLY.

Israel had no right in international waters to attack this ship, and the people onboard this ship had every right to defend themselves.

San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, 12 June 1994, paragraph 67: "Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they: (a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture."

All of these conditions were very clearly met in this case. Well, so much for the "Piracy in International Waters" theory. Sorry to confuse people here with facts again. ;-)

When it comes to the whole justice/human rights b.s. that comes out of Sweden, it's just a cover for a nation that enjoyed peace by having its borders protected by other countries, and making money off of the wars fought. I guess anyone who doesn't have to fight, or who can buy their way out of them can be pacifist.

I've met Swedes who, completely sober, look me in the eye and say "we take refugees because we are nice people." The self-deception in Sweden is amazing.

if one mistakenly enter iranain waters without permission, that person will be tried for espionage. However this is a case of delibrately trying to peacefully enter another country's water without permission despite repeated warnings. To make the matter worse the peace activicts resulted to peaceful violence when accosted by IDF. I agree that the IDF overreacted but the question is if it the same thing happened in Turkey, what would Turkey have done. Food for thought.

Although the world is condemning Israel's naval blockade of Gaza, no one seems to be focusing on the fact that Egypt has also tighten the transport of humanitarian aid and contraband of goods from Egypt into Gaza. Neither Egypt or Israel want Gaza to have uninterrupted flow of weapons and rockets to be used against her them. Not long ago, when MP Galloway lead his famous Viva Palestine brigade across North Africa and entered Egypt he was refused access to Gaza and was physically hurt in an altercation with Egyptian authorities. Egypt and Israel are not interested in allowing a terrorist state to blossom on the Gaza Strip. The democratically elected Hamas government has to recognize that Gaza will not be able to live as a normal country until it resigns firing rockets into Israel and stops advocating the destruction of Israel. If Hamas wants war with Israel at the expense of the well-being of the local Palestinian population, they should be made accountable to the donor countries that support this failed welfare state. Sadly enough, this episode will prevent weapons to be imported into Gaza.


I would also like to point out that 47 years ago, President Kennedy, imposed a naval blockade on Cuba as a result of the introduction of Soviet missile on Cuban soil. Kennedy at time informed the world community that such missiles constituted an existential threat to the USA and therefore America would act forcefully to prevent additional missiles from being introduced into the island. Krushev assessed the situation at that time and recognized that certain red lines could not be crossed without major military and political repercussions. Unfortunately, Israel recognizes very well that having open access to shipping in Gaza will mean more deadly and frequent rocket attacks on her civilian population. Sadly enough the world does not seem to care too much about such facts and instead wants to fool itself that Gaza is a peaceful loving country oppressed by Israel.

That was not an aid convoy.

It was a convoy to carry out a political act with no concern genuinely given to the starving people of Gaza.

I see the 'spontaneous' protests which were organised over the last few weeks, went ahead in Sweden.

The protestors want aid delivered without going through customs so that weapons can be delivered so that tensions can be hightened.

The people of Gaza need aid. Aid should be organised, sent through customs, checked for counterband and then distributed without Hamas involvement. Hamas sells all aid that arrives in Gaza and that needs to be dealt with.

As for the idiots on that convoy. As part of a trial, they should be screened by psychiatrists to find out just how nuts they are and the information publicly released.

After this incident, getting aid to Gaza will be next to impossible. That is exactly what the extremists want so as to encourage more extremism.

The Israeli's walked into that public relations trap, that the protesters set for them.

Also a lot of attention needs to be directed towards the Egyptians who refuse to allow aid through there border. Anyone protesting against Israel without protesting against Egypt is an hiding there bigotry behind protest.

Bullshit, I can assure you that the Israelis used their guns as last resort, they were about to get lynched, as the first one left the rope he was ambushed by 30 men, in the beginning they were only holding paintball guns, they pulled their pistols out in the end, because that was the only way to keep themselves alive.

The Israelis are not pirates, the ship was headed to Gaza which is under military lock down, whether you like it or don't. In the convoy there were a few more ships, but on the other ships no resistance was encountered from the occupants.

And at last: Gaza's real problem is Hamas and not Israel. I'll give you an example, just 2-3 weeks ago, there was kind of a Hip Hop show in Gaza, arranged by the U.N or something, in the middle of the show, Hamas came up and interrupted it. Why? Because it's against the Islamic laws according to them. Without Hamas, Gaza would have been in much better status (Not that now they miss humanitarian equipment, food or anything like that, they don't).

In my point of view and as far as I have studied the matter, there are several explanations for this, Jes:

1 - Firstly because it is widely covered conflict by the media whereas African genocides are most of the times ignored or don't receive 10% of the attention it should

2 - This is a consequence of the bonds - mainly economic and political - between the western world and the region, mainly with Israel.

3- The western world played a crucial role in the "creation" the State of Israel. They did so for serveral reasons: economic, of course, and also political, as if to redeem themselves from the Jewish Holocaust

However, I don't think one conflict is more important than the other at all. I think all the conflicts should receive the same type of attention. What happens in Palestine is as awful as what happens in Sudan and so forth...

read a book by Norman Finkelstein, it basically explains the truth of the situation which is that the sate of Israel wasn't created by Holocaust survivors it was created by European and USA Jews, and the closest they ever came to a consecration camp was the odd Cezanne hanging on commandants wall. The truth of the matter is the main victims of the of the Holocaust were Eastern Jews (who had a different language culture etc...) who were to all effects and purposes wiped off the face of the world. I think its interesting that USA military is now openly stating that their support of the Israeli state is costing the lives of American soldiers and increasingly politicians on both sides of the Atlantic are talking of Israel as a burden rather than an asset. Do I think this will moderate Israeli public opinion, no for two reasons:

1: The ultra religious Jews have the highest birthrate in the country, and as you now they are hell bent on building their 3rd and 4th Temple.

2: The massive influx of right wing racist Jews from Russia.

Judging from the way that Israeli politics has moved further right I see future conflict as more not less likely, it's just a matter of whether it will turn Nuclear.

The first reports from the news reporters on board the Turkish Ship are coming in, it transpires the first person to be shot was a Turk attempting to fend off (with water from a water hose) IDF forces boarding by boat, he was shot in the arm. The first Turk to be shot dead, was shot directly on top of his skull, apparently IDF forces pointed their weapons from port holes in the helicopter and randomly sprayed the deck. So contrary to IDF claims, the actual shooting started before the first solider illegally landed on Turkish soil. Apparently one of the Turks who was throwing tomatoes at IDF was first shot and then while lying helpless on the deck was murdered with a shot to the head. I also understand 3 of dead died on board 3 hours after they were shot despite demands by the Captain they be medevaced. It transpires a member of the Knesset, who was on board during the armed invasion of Sovereign Turkish territory, also requested in their native language the 3 wounded Turkish Civilians (who were left to die of their wounds) be given medical assistance.

I wonder if the hypocrites who so self righteously whine in these comments would feel the same about trying this little stunt with China, or Turkey, or Russia, or Sudan, or their cultural hero, Castro's Cuba (where the once 2nd most prosperous land in Latin America has been reduced to beggar status)?

Maybe Sweden will have to face this when the fools in Sweden have allowed the Moslem immigrants to feel that Sweden must be overthrown according to Allah's pronouncements.

Not one fake 'Palistinian' deserves any so-called 'right of return'. In 1948 their grandparents left Israel at the word of Hitlers friend, the head honcho of the local Moslem hierchy, so that their 'victorious Arab Armies could kill everyone in sight w/o killing Moslems. Then they could 'return' afterward and rape any Jewish women they could find and rob and kill Jewish survivors for their land and money to take for themselves.

Sweden's leftist foolishness has made them blind to the brute reality of dealing with these Moslem monsters. My brother on business in Saudi Arabia had to accompany his Saudi hosts to the soccer stadium on the weekend to see mostly women get the heads chopped off. This was considered entertainment. Maybe the Swedes who think they are so 'modern' would like to more clearly understand that the Moslems murder many women in their much vaunted 'honor killings' and they murder their gay citizens with abandon.

But as long as the mainstream media hide this brute reality the Swedes look more like the babes-in-the-woods that overseas observers seem to think they are. Just like previous to WWII the peacenik types weakened the West while screaming bloody murder while Hitler and Stalin armed themselves to the teeth. Then once the inevitable World War broke out, actual adults had to take over and fight and die for the weaklings who were so afraid, the weaklings who started WWII in the first place.

I separate the brain dead Islamofacist-authored commentary from that of the much more civilized Swedish-authored commentary.

Blockade runners should expect to be approached by combat-ready blockaders. Something I learned growing up California during the Civil Rights Riots of the 60's - never antagonize a man who has a gun.

Five of the six 'aid convoy' ships didn't attack the Israelis, and left unharmed. The one ship that did attack the Israelis got stomped. Go figure.

I agree with the widespread opinion that the voyage of the ''aid'' ships was a contrived affair by the Palestinians. Designed to wrongfoot the Israelis.

Israel has been at war with the Hamas organisation for years. Israel must always defend her security. She cannot afford any margin of error.

After all it is the declared aim of the muslims to ''drive Israel into the sea''.
