Little interest in military service - warning

A lack of volunteers could lead to severe manpower shortages in Sweden's armed services, an organization representing conscripts has warned.

Sweden’s government and military chiefs overestimated interest in voluntary military service when they abolished conscription, Värnpliktsrådet (‘the Conscripts’ Council’) said, alleging the government calculations were based on wishful thinking.

Only ten percent of young people said they were ‘very interested’ in undertaking the three-month basic military training course set to replace compulsory military service on July 1st, according to a survey commissioned by Värnpliktsrådet.

“Of those who have expressed interest, only one in three would consider signing up to serve as a soldier under the employment conditions that will be applied,” the organization wrote in a statement.

Värnpliktsrådet’s chairman Jesper Holm said it was “time for the defence minister and military leaders to remove their blinkers. Otherwise they are going to get an unpleasant surprise on 1st July.

The government and military have previous claimed that interest in joining the military was more than sufficient to match the requirement for 4,000 soldiers per year.

The survey was carried out by market research company Markör. Some 1,000 men and women aged 17-25 were interviewed.

Army???No...Swedes do not need the army because you have Allah eller ngt that can protect the halal country..
13:25 June 9, 2010 by AirForceGuy
Why serve your country in the military and stress yourself? They'll take care of you without you doing anything in return. Isn't that the current mentality?

@ sleepinacoffin, Yeah like the reds were able to save the mother ? Defeated by uncivilised unorganized ignorant people living on mountains. :-))) Coz they had what you wished for sweden to have in you sh!t satire.

Armies that allow a soldier to return fire are generally more successful at attracting recruits. Who wants to be mocked by the real soldiers of other nations?
13:41 June 9, 2010 by ehwhat?
Military service requires people to place the good of their nation over their own desires and comfort. In other words Service not Self. This concept and the moral/ethical perspective that it requires is sorely lacking in general, not only in Sweden. We have raised up generations of entitled people who think that anything unpleasant or difficult or even simply inconvenient will be done by others for the slackers benefit. Most governments seem to be happy to pander to this belief. It is every bit as unsupportable in the long run as the banking situation that lead to our current recession. And the eventual result every bit as damaging.

I served 5 years in the Racist UK military and three at University, if I were 16 again I would gladly swap my 5 years military service for 15 years of University.

I guess not much chance for Sweden to remain a top contributor for UN missions.

It's kind of hard for me to understand the situation here.i served the elite forces (it was compulsory ) and i absolutely loathed it since they're totally strict, strict rules for everything, no ipod no camera no enjoyable thing were allowed. Now here i see Swedes uploading photos on their FB accounts wearing the army clothes while in service, even photos of guns, bullets and... that back there they would bust you ass for every single of them. Here with such lax rules still youth are not interested in serving the army!? what's the problem? This is a beautiful country, if peeps want to maintain it the way it is, they have to be responsible about their country.

Who realy wants to say "my job is to kill".

Sweden provides its citsens opportunities to study in universities and be what they want. These opportunities are open even to minorities!

In the US opportunity to enter universities and dvelop skills is limited to those born in poverty. University tution and subsistance costs are too high for young people to afford without financial support. There is also the problem of quality of education at the primary and secondary school levels. Poor areas have little capacity to raise revenue and fund their schools adequately. In slum areas high school students might not be able to read properly. The only outlet for young people is the military and the industrial military complex makes that possible. Soon it is possible that Iran might be a target of aggression. If it is invaded, plenty of job opportunities will be created for the poor in the US. The same cannot be said of the victim countries. America's miliary power destroys sources of livelihood by bombing economic infrastructures, bridges and water supplies or forcing the skilled people to migrate. As in Iraq ,millions of Iranians might escape to the neighboring countries. Some might even come to Europe, looking for jobs and secure place to live.

Thus, war is also counterproductive for the West even when it is capable of winning them! Those who do not see it this way is the military industrial complex, which profits from war and destruction!

He Kronaboy perhaps you could enlighten us as to what ''Racist UK Military'' unit you served with. Seems five years is a long time to come to that conclusion, if that was the case why didn't you buy yourself out sooner? I served in the RAF and the Territorial Army for a total of 13 years and never came across a ''Racist Unit''. So please name the unit??
18:27 June 9, 2010 by J Jack
@ Audrian. Sweden is a neutral country, the army is symbolic and neutral countries do not participate in wars, so we are told. Joining the Swedish army is just as honest a way to make a living as anything.

I have a lot of friends back in Belfast, Donegal and Glasgow looking for jobs.

Where do they apply?

PS: I am serious, if there is jobs going, post the details. Quitea few people I know back home have lost jobs. Quite a few of them would have no problem joining the Swedish military.

@ Kronaboy

Your comment is nonsense.

There is some racism in some units in the British military which has been mostly stamped out now. The British military has been systematically identifying racists and kicking them out of the military with dishonourable discharges. There has never been a racist unit.
19:14 June 9, 2010 by Earandur Lissesul
I agree with Nemesis comments, where do I sign on the dotted line and pick up my King's SEK for signing. Still would be interested to know which unit Kronorboy served in? In all walks of life there are racists lurking and they should be rifted out and exposed for what they are. But without harping on I would like to know what British unit was racists, more to the point was it the Army, RAF, Royal Navy or the Royal Marines and which of these Kronaboy served?
20:52 June 9, 2010 by Snoozer
This article is nonsense and Jesper Holm is an egoist and a fool.

There will be more than enough volunteers for the army in the future. Just as there has been in the past.
10:48 June 10, 2010 by hilt_m
would they then be paid? make the military more of an employment opportunity and they will come.
21:41 June 11, 2010 by mcarroll1
Sweden needs a strong army. I agree pay them more and offer a career in the army and they wont have a problem finding recruits. The army is ill served by the politicians of today. Maybe Sweden might need this army at home sooner rather than later.
