Government pulls ahead in poll

Sweden's Moderates have overtaken the Social Democrats as the country's largest party, according to a new Sifo poll which shows the government coalition nosing ahead of the opposition.

Polling firm Sifo’s June survey contradicts the results of a major Statistics Sweden (SCB) poll published on Thursday.

Where SCB pointed to an absolute parliamentary majority for the Mona Sahlin-led Red-Green opposition, Sifo puts the four-party governing Alliance in a 2.8 point lead.

“It’s the first time since November [2006] that the Alliance has surpassed the Red-Greens. It’s a strong recovery,” said Toivo Sjörén at Sifo to newspaper Göteborgs-Posten.

The Alliance will however be concerned that the Centre Party and the Christian Democrats continue to hover perilously close to the 4 percent threshold required for parliamentary participation.

The poll results gave a boost to the Sweden Democrats: the far-right party would hold the balance of power should the Sifo results hold sway on election day in September.

Although the SCB poll is the largest of its kind, the Sifo results echo a trend recorded in recent weeks by several polling organizations. Analysts have attributed the discrepancy to the fact that many of the potential voters polled by SCB were approached before the left-green opposition presented a raft of joint policies in May, an event that precipitated a dip in support for the three-party coalition.

Sifo polled 1,910 prospective voters on their party preferences in interviews carried out from May 31st to June 10th.

Sifo poll results, June 2010 (changes since May 2010 in parentheses)

Government
Moderate Party 32.9 (+2.0)
Centre Party 4.9 (-0.2)
Liberal Party 6.1 (-0.6)
Christian Democrats 4.5 (+1.0)

Total: 48.4 (Election 2006: 48.2)

Opposition
Social Democrats 30.6 (-3.7)
Left Party 5.1 (+0.8)
Green Party 9.9 (-0.8)

Total: 45.6 (Election 2006: 46.1)

Sweden Democrats 4.3 (+0.8)
Others 1.7 (+0.7)

I think that it is pointless to keep reporting these polls - all they are telling us is that the election result will be close

However what they don't tell us is what the error margin is on the statistics

- on Thursday a poll of 9000 people told us that the Red-green block had a 6 point lead

- Today a poll of 1900 is saying the Right alliance has a 2 point lead

It's going to be a long 3 months if The Local is going to publich 3 or 4 conflicting polls each week ..........

All Swedish media outlets report all of these polls, why would TL be any different? Sweden likes it stats it seems.
17:05 June 13, 2010 by Jes
I agree with @Puffin . This is yet another media gimmick . How could the Red-green block drop 6 points within a matter of days ? What ahs the government done since last thursday that has helped it to "pull ahead " in such a short time .

Maybe TL is mistaking politics for football .

I think taking a statistics course should be mandatory as part of being able to vote. So you can actually understand how irrelevant these polls are.

What they are only good at is catching those people sitting on the fence. And usually if you sit on the fence you end up picking one of the two majorities. Its a waste of time, so is politics but that is a whole different story

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE

Stop publishing this crap all the time. Polls aren't elections, and they don't ultimately decide the outcome. This type of News is becoming spam more or less.

they are trying to brainwash people, it is obvious that it is part of a moderaterna campaign.

The poll is assuming the pirates are in others (1.7%) I reakon it will be close, but if the pirates get the same amount as the euro elections (around 9%) they could hold the balance of power..considering they have timed the trail of the pirate bay guys to run at the exact same time of the election...
