Volvo sales continue rise in Europe

Volvo Cars is continuing to triumph in the European market. In May, the company increased sales by 18.6 percent while the overall market shrank compared to the same period last year

Volvo Cars sold 17,882 vehicles in May in the countries covered by professional body European Automobile Manufacturers' Assocation's (ACEA's) statistics - the EU plus Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.

The increase of 18.6 percent was one of the largest for any car brand. Only Land Rover and Lexus, which both in absolute terms sold considerably less than Volvo, noted higher percentage increases compared with last May.

Total sales fell in ACEA's territory by 8.7 percent, according to preliminary figures announced on Tuesday. In a press release, ACEA mentioned two reasons for the decline.

The economic situation in Europe has become harsher and in some quarters, government support has ended. In Germany, car companies lost a total of 35 percent of its sales.

However, in the first five months of the year, car sales in Europe increased 2.3 percent compared with same period in 2009, with Volvo's share rising 23.5 percent. Volvo also increased its share of the European market from 1.3 to 1.6 percent.

Volvo is currently owned by Ford, which has agreed to sell the company to Geely Automobile of China, in a deal expected to be completed in the autumn.

Saab is no longer recognized individually the statistics. Saab cars are included under "other brands."

*LOVE* my volvo! Getting the C70 when my lil' S40 is paid off next year. Wouldn't have it any other way! ;)

Don't know about Europe, but I'm looking forward to trading in my 2008 S40 for one of the new S60's later this year :)

p.s. @ mjennin2 ... I know what you mean. I paid off my S40 two months ago.

Can't wait to see the "made in China" version. It can't be but a few year off. Then when will the "engineered in China" version come out? How will it compare to the Russian mob version of SAAB? The Chinese and Russians are soooo much better than the American's!

I dream the 240 DL returns- my neighbour has one and I would give anything for that car. It's one of the best cars ever sold. Why can it not be replicated?

I wonder if there is some way of stopping this deal from going through?

No, having Volvo owned by China (although disappointing) is good for the company, I think. China is a wealthy nation and it will offer protection to the company's swedish employees, whilst boosting sales in China, the world's largest and fastest-growing car economy.

But I know for certain, when I *do* get my C70 next year, I'm having it Euro-delivered. Want to make sure it was produced in Sweden by Swedes and helping their employment situation, instead of made by the chinese whose economic gravitational pull is devouring the world...

I must agree with you. The Overseas Delivery is the only way to purchase a new Volvo. I unfortunately am not able to take delivery of my 2011 C 30 as time and commitments will not permit. But we will do so again when replacing my wife's XC90. Do it before the Chinese discontinue it.
