Big royal turnout expected for wedding

Published: 16 Jun 10 13:28 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/27262/20100616/

Sweden’s royal wedding is set to attract one of largest gathering of kings and queens seen in Europe for years, a guest list for Friday’s pre-wedding concert has revealed.

The guest list for the wedding itself is a closely-guarded secret, but the foreign royals and heads of state attending the concert are thought certain to also attend the wedding.

The list confirms speculation that Prince Carl Philip’s ex-girlfriend, Emma Pernald, will attend. Princess Madeleine’s former fiancé Jonas Bergström, from whom she split after allegations of infidelity, did not make the guest list.

Among those who have accepted invitations to the concert are six monarchs, including Sweden’s own king, two former monarchs and two presidents. The concert, at the Stockholm Concert Hall, is being hosted by the Riksdag, Sweden’s parliament. The hall is best known as being the location of the annual Nobel Prize ceremony.

All Sweden’s Nordic neighbours are represented at the concert by their heads of state. Denmark’s Queen Margarethe and husband Prince Henrik are coming along with Crown Prince Fredrik and his Australian-born wife Crown Princess Mary. Norway’s King Harald and Queen Sonja will be joined by Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Princess Märtha-Louise and her husband Ari Behn.

Finnish President Tarja Halonen and husband Pentti Arajärvi will be there, as will Iceland’s President Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson, with wife Dorrit Moussaieff.

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is another head of state attending, along with her heir Prince Willem-Alexander and Argentinian-born wife Princess Máxima.

Europe’s smaller countries are also represented, with Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa slated to attend. The Grand Duke is a relative of the king - his grandmother was Swedish Princess Astrid. Adding some Mediterranean glamour will be Prince Albert of Monaco, who is accompanied by his girlfriend, South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock.

Former monarchs heading to Stockholm include ex-King Simeon and Queen Margarita of Bulgaria and ex-King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.

They will be joined by Prince Felipe, the heir to Spain’s throne, Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex from Britain and Prince Alois, the heir to the throne of Liechtenstein. One of the more remarkable guests is Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan.

King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan will not attend the concert, but the Jordan News Agency has confirmed that they plan to come to the wedding.

The list of Swedish guests includes a large turn-out from the Swedish royal family, with the kings three sisters Princesses Margaretha, Birgitta and Christina making a rare appearance together. Both King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia will be there, along with Princess Madeleine and Prince Carl Philip.

Non-royal guests include most members of the government and Riksdag. Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will be there with wife Filippa, as will Social Democrat leader Mona Sahlin with husband Bo. Left Party leader Lars Ohly, who said he turned down an invitation to the wedding on principle - he is a republican - is not attending the concert.

From the media world, the editors of most of Stockholm’s large daily newspapers will be there, as will a number of prominent businesspeople. Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg is attending, as is Annika Falkengren, CEO of SEB bank.

While the concert guest list is a guide to the likely guest list on Saturday, it is thought that further high-profile guests will be at the church on the big day.

what a joke...all the useless craps from different part of the world are gathering on the eve of another prolong burden on human kind. Only God knows when all these monarchy will be erased from human history........
15:39 June 16, 2010 by glamelixir
oh wonderful, so just cause I loooove monarchy soo much and how much money they spend and how not blue blooded they are. In this beautiful picture, our beloved fellow Maxima Zorriguieta, princess of holland, known in my country (her country) as a party girl with the complex of the outsider who wanted to climb the social lather and everyone on its way until she found the prince partying in New york...

If she would live in Argentina, she would probably have a secretary job for 2000 kr a month, but now she, as all the rest, are partying with our money.

Oh god, how can people still support monarchy?
15:48 June 16, 2010 by Nemesis
Oh wonderful.

Thats all we need. Every nutjob on the planet and there enemies coming to Sweden.
16:03 June 16, 2010 by DAVID T
Stop putting them down you ungrateful scum - this is Swedens big day - a country that welcomed you here - i'd much rather my taxes be spent on this than a load of immigrant benefit claiming leaches
16:19 June 16, 2010 by Ladybadone
I have to agree with you David. :)
16:22 June 16, 2010 by Sherian Elizabeth
I can not believe what a bunch of spiteful hateful group of ego manics out there who are so jealous and bitter over someone getting married regardless of who they are. These people are BORN into these positions, they did not say, "Hay make me a prince, royal or otherwise". I am just an normal citizen of this world and begrudge nobody their position in life or what they have. It seems to me that these nutjobs @nemesis, as you call them, treat the human race with more respect then you do, so what if they are royal and you aren't. It's called get on with your life and @glamelixir, where you personally involved in Maxima's life in Argentina, did you party with her, eat at her table, work with her, etc. This I doubt seriously. Then why the bitterness over who she is? @David T, your right, there is a lot of SCUM out there who should be grateful for living in Sweden. I would have no problem paying taxes to support the royal family knowing the goodwill that they bring to the country. The people in Sweden live in a WAR-FREE country, less CRIME, and more tolerant country then I do. I can't walk out my front door at night time for fear of being shot to death, and I live in a so called very good area of Chicago, USA. I constantly see war and crime as a way of life here, our children in Chicago are up for target practice by gangs in the city, thinks our government cares, not at all, your king doesn't involve your country in wars across the world, doesn't give your tax dollars to

big banks so that they can all go on really expensive vacations, and yet my government takes away the little health care that we do get. I could go on and on about the wrongs of this country but from what I see of Sweden, your country far outs ways the good over the bad. I wish the Princess and her new husband a very Happy and Long Enjoyable Life. The scum can go to hell.

Omg...Victoria's dress is beautiful in that pic.... *I WANT IT*

@Nemesis

with all the nutjobs here, our very own Trow is looking saner by the minute :)

To: Sherian Elizabeth: I live in Chicago too, and bloody agree with you!
19:05 June 16, 2010 by calebian22
Renfeh,

No one, no matter how looney toons, could make T-Bone look sane.
19:13 June 16, 2010 by si
@Sherian - Being grateful for living in sweden and supporting royal parasitic scum are two completely separate issues.
19:45 June 16, 2010 by proteasome
B list royals and Nordic heads of state, underwhelming. Where are the British Royal Family? Al Gore too busy with his divorce? George Bush could catch a flight out of Texas? Meatloaf? David Bowie?
20:07 June 16, 2010 by Renfeh Hguh
@si

I'd rather support royalty than support "the world owes me a living" socialist parasites. Royalty is much cheaper to support.
22:11 June 16, 2010 by glamelixir
@DAVID T I prefer my taxes going to neither of those, but to education and health instead.

@ Sherian Elizabeth Not all people in royalty are BORN in it btw, and that is the point of it.

And as for your other questions... yes, indeed is your answer.

This is not Sweden's big day, this is their big day and our big money. I think contributions to the royal wedding should be voluntary and not imposed, but I guess that would be hard to understand to many medival minds...
22:17 June 16, 2010 by JulieLou40
God, I cannot believe how many bitter people there are on here!!
22:53 June 16, 2010 by sendia
@glamelexir, I dunno if Maxima Zorriguieta is a party girl or whatever its between her and her husband what do you have anything to do with it.

and you have are spreading more wrong informantion regarding her, she has basque nobility roots and she is a graduate in economics and a former investment banker,,,she would not have to work as a secretary for 2000 kr as you say even if she wasnt married to the prince.

jealously and hatred is eating you up.
06:46 June 17, 2010 by silly t
Comment: the fact remains that the Monarchy is archaic....(old fashioned)..

@Sherian...all the crab you wrote is what makes America great...If i were a president of a country,i would gladly hand it over to America.

why don't swedes like the monarchy? because it is elitist..period
12:06 June 17, 2010 by cogito
Marathongirl

To: Sherian Elizabeth: I live in Chicago too, and bloody agree with you!

Has anyone noticed it is ppl living in the USA and NOT paying Swedish taxes who want the rest of us to pay for this travesty?

@Sherian Eliz. who writes "they were BORN into these positions."

Poor victims. If it is so intolerable to be a royal, they could always renounce.
15:13 June 18, 2010 by dsc
I can see Sverige will have a referendum on this very soon.

Otherwise, who doesn't love weddings?
22:56 June 18, 2010 by waajid
I am neither Swede nor I am living here permanently, but since I have a company here so I am paying huge taxes much more then a average Swede or a avg company do....So David T every immigrant might not be a benifit claiming leaches.

As far as wedding is concerned I think one should enjoy this...This is a big day ......We MUST love this....I think its a rare occasion we must be part of happiness and stop creating this haterd and disrespect.
01:57 June 19, 2010 by Brugge
You disrespectful peasants need to pipe down. Crying about paying for the monarchy is a bit like crying about the nice things that go in the white house. Quit you're whining, the Swedish monarchy is something much larger than yourself.
04:05 June 19, 2010 by Sherian Elizabeth
Why can't people in Sweden stop being so jealous of the royal family. Bet if you were one of them you would enjoy all they had. It takes to much energy to hate and be bitter over what you don't have. Enjoy what you have. Victoria seems like a nice person, what harm has she done to any of you? Being hateful over who she is just shows your character and the type of person you are. I have no hate for her or anyone in this world and believe me I should but why waste my time and energy on hate.
08:51 June 19, 2010 by si
"Sherian Elizabeth" is obiviously Victoria's pseudonym. How else can this random person living on the other side of the world with an unbridled passion for Swedish royalty be explained ?
11:33 June 19, 2010 by Sherian Elizabeth
@si,

i am just one person in this world that has no hate in her. I just am not jealous of who Victoria is or what she has. I just wish her and Daniel all the happiness and love that life has to offer. Some of the comments here have shown me and others the type of character that some of you are. It makes me wonder why some of you are so narrow minded and jealous. And for being half way around the world, I am a very broad minded person who reads a lot of history of the world so I don't consider myself to be narrow minded. I travel a lot to other places on this planet to see how other countries live and to view the history of that country. I think Sweden is a beautiful country, has an interesting history, the country side is outstanding and the people friendly. I have many Swedish friends who are happy for Victoria. Maybe you should open a book and learn something. I do believe that I have hit a lot of sore spots here. Some of you (si) just can't take another's point of view without be nasty. For shame
