Police out in force for royal wedding

Some 2,000 police officers are set to patrol the streets of Stockholm in the coming days, with around 15 heads of state attending the marriage of Crown Princess Victoria and commoner Daniel Westling.

"This police operation is the largest operation we have ever done in Stockholm," Swedish police spokesman Ulf Goeransson told reporters.

He said some 2,000 officers will be walking the streets of the capital, where Swedish flags have already inundated the streets, during Saturday's wedding of Crown Princess Victoria, 32, to her former gym trainer.

The police will be joined by over 6,000 members of the Swedish military, for what Swedish public radio called the largest Swedish military operation of all time.

"It is really big for us. It's not like we've never done anything like this before but the extent (of the operation) is especially large this time," Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Beck-Friis Häll told the radio.

The 6,000 military personnel include 2,900 officers and soldiers and 1,200 home guards, but also musicians making up 19 military bands that will provide entertainment for the couple as their cortege parades through the city.

Towards the end of the couple's procession, 18 Gripen fighter jets will fly over the capital, at a height of 400 meters (1,312 feet), Häll said.

Police spokesman Göransson told reporters Swedish police had visited neighbouring Denmark and Norway, where royal weddings were recently held, to learn about security arrangements.

They also drew on the experience of the Netherlands, where security around royal events was beefed up after seven bystanders were killed in failed attack on the royal family in 2009.

Saturday's event is expected to draw large crowds, including families with children, and police said they would establish no fewer than eight centres throughout the capital to help reunite lost little ones with their parents.

No worries, we have so much tax payer crowns to spend, just added to the tab, what is a few million more anyway? Besides the King is so poor anyway he will not be able to afford all this extra charges! Mind you if they put all this tax money to good use, it might actually help the tax payer, huh, no f……. them! Dan and Vicky needed more, it is their birthright.
10:11 June 18, 2010 by Sherian Elizabeth
@rugla: being mean spirited and spiteful does not become you. I pay taxes to a government that uses my money in far worse ways then yours does. At least your country has someone (head of state) who does not embaress them around the world, create wars where thousands of your country men and women are killed each day, give your tax dollars to their friends so that they can go on really expensive vacations, bankrupt your country to the point where millions lose their homes and families are now living on the street with children, take away what little health care there is for seniors and children and feels the little people deserve it. You live in a peaceful beautiful country so enjoy this wedding and wish wish them good luck. What ever in the he....... did Victoria and Daniel do to you to make you so hateful?

@Sherian Elizabeth

Totaly agree with you

@rugla

If you don't like it - leave

This country welcomes many people and if all they can do is complain about how there tax's are spent they know where to go - much rather spend it on the royals than a bunch of handout seeking immigrants
12:47 June 18, 2010 by rugla
First of all not an immigrant but a Swede! Not mean and spiteful but ironic, I agree with you about the handout seeking immigrants definitely you have a great point! however I like many of you pay more than my fair share of taxes, specially on commissions, where you pay a premium, what burns me from our country is to hear, sorry we do not have any funds when asked why they are not renovating the humidity damaged avdelning at your children's dagis, or to be waiting for months to get treatment for your child at Karolinska, with similar excuses, not enough staff and funds. Yet you see millions spent on a wedding who gives you what exactly?
13:03 June 18, 2010 by phoenix_glory
Well, they got that totally wrong about you Rugla.

I've yet to experience Swedish life but if its better then the UK, I'll be happy
15:04 June 18, 2010 by rugla
Well Sweden is great, hope you enjoy life here, and you get something for what you pay for, be patient with my country man, we have a lot to learn from other countries, we are too complacent, I hate that of us, we turn the other cheek and are afraid of confrontation, this is why I like this forum, a colleague of mine introduced me to it, and find it amusing, and good practice for my English skills, what I like is that people are not afraid to debate and speak their mind and complaint, we Swedes are, yes indeed we are to afraid to speak out against our government, leaders, and everything else!

@rugla

I know what immigrnats can do to a country, I wish that all immigrants here from south of the border would go home and take care of their own country instead of taking from my country. Then their own country is so corrupt (stealing from the poor so that the rich can enjoy life)and they have a president who doesn't give a damn. Women come from south of the border to have their children born here so that they can claim citizenship for the child, then they can stay here to raise that child on welfare from my government. That state of California is almost bankrupt because of this (not from there) is in such bad shape that the government workers sometimes have to wait to get paid.

From what I have read over the years about Sweden, royal puts a good face on Sweden and that many people are proud of their hertiage. Your country enjoys peace, goodwill from the world, it's very creative with it's industry, tolerates other people from around the world and has a sense of honor. I wish I could say the same about mine. I am so disgusted with my country (Washington and Franklin would turn over in their graves if they know what has become of their dreams and ideas) that if I could afford to leave I would.
20:15 June 18, 2010 by calebian22
Sherian,

You have obviously heard good things about Sweden(which there are many), but I have one question. Is it the same source that makes you believe, and I quote, "....create wars where thousands of your country men and women are killed each day." Seriously? Each day? There have been 5478 American deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. Do the math.

As for your comments about immigrants. There is a difference between an immigrant and an illegal immigrant. One has signed the guestbook on the way in the door and the other has not. This may be inaccurate, but your comments make you seem as informed about America as Sarah Palin.
20:25 June 18, 2010 by villjobba
@ Sherian:

America or USA -to be precise - is not exactly your country. So before hatefully calling people south of the border immigrants or whichever group might also be classified thus, remember that your ancestors(I am presuming you are white or Caucasian American) where illegal immigrants from oversees(Europe) who came and ripped the real Americans(native Indians ) of their land and relegated them to reserves to this day. So do some fact checking next time you want to open your disgusting trap to vent out xenophobic comments. What ignorance and ingratitude. Ish!

@ David T and Rugla:

If you are honest with yourselves, unless you are just a bunch of ignorant xenophobes, you must acknowledge that that not all immigrants receive handouts. I will not get into the question of why some have to end up receiving handouts as that will be opening another can of worms. That said, there are(1) immigrants - I am friends with and know many more - in this country who are contributing significantly in high taxes to making this country what it is and getting back far less than they are giving in terms of those taxes; and (2) native swedes who are receiving handouts as well from a fund/system to which some of these immigrants I mentioned are contributing in taxes. So, think of some of these undeniable facts before you make sweeping generalizations.

Cheers

@calebian22

Your right, it's not everyday that thousands are killed but the war here is a big problem when even one serviceman/servicewoman is killed. A lot of Americans here are sick to death of war, it's been going on for years now and there is no end in sight. This all started when Bush Jr tried to do what Bush Sr could not do and then only under false information to the American people did these wars start. I am angry over these wars, these egos that know no bounds and don't have their sons and daughters fighting on the front line.

@villjobba

I didn't make a choice to be born here, it just happened as you are born somewhere, what I am trying to say is that I have paid and still pay my taxes and I don't like people from south of the border or wherever they come from that come here illegally and use the resources and don't give back. If these people got jobs, paid taxes and voted, there would be no problem, but for the majority that isn't the case. When you see women having child upon child just to stay here is this country it's sick. And then you think about the children brought up in poverty and crime. As for ripping this country away from the native Indians, I don't like what this country has done and still does regarding this issue. I do voice my opinion on this to my government(I write a lot of letters) and it all falls on deaf ears. As for Sarah Palin, I have no more use for her then the devil. I belive in treating one fairly but when it's all take, take, take and give me more, then I say go the heck home and take from your own country.
