Women taking over 'male' professions

Women are set to dominate professions that have traditionally been the reserve of men and within 20 years will be the majority among economists, lawyers, architects and doctors, a new forecast shows.

Swedish women are increasingly represented in professions long dominated by men and those requiring long university education, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB) figures published in the Metro daily.

The changing gender demographic can already been seen today, with women dominating among younger age groups, while men retain the majority among the older generations.

An explanation forwarded for the development is that women, long over-achievers in school, are now electing to continue their studies and gained higher qualifications that their male counterparts.

Currently 39 percent of women in Sweden have a higher education qualification, in comparison to 31 percent for men. While the figure for both groups is expected to increase, the gap is expected to grow - to 50 and 36 percent respectively by 2030.

By 2030 women are expected to be in the majority among lawyers, economists, vets, architects, agronomists, doctors, dentists, theologians and scientists. Men are expected to continue to dominate professions such as engineers and police, and within forestry and transport-related subjects.

You might be waiting a long time. However, the only woman hardware engineer I ever met in the microelectronics field also happened to be the best. When she called me with robotics issues, I would always cringe, because I knew the problem was serious if she couldn't fix it herself.
