Driver hits elk and runs off with slice of thigh

A car driver involved in a collision with an elk on the E22 motorway in Blekinge in southern Sweden, claimed a slice of meat from the animal's thigh before fleeing the scene in a callous hit and run incident that has left a local hunter seething.

"To violate game in this way in unprecedented. I am lost for words," said Mikael Lundin, a hunter responsible for tracking down injured animals, to the local Sydöstran daily.

Collisions with wild animals are a common occurrence in some parts of Sweden, despite improved security and fencing in recent years. When drivers collide with an elk or other game they are required to inform the police who get in touch with the local hunter responsible for tracking the animal and ending its suffering.

But when this driver on the E22 near Brömsebro in Blekinge collided with a cow elk, they took the chance to claim a piece of the animal, presumably for later consumption.

"This is a case of very low moral fibre, of butchery and pure theft," Lundin told the newspaper.

According to the newspaper several passing cars noted the offending vehicle parked by the side of the road with its hazard lamps on. Although the animal is reported to have landed in the ditch by the side of the main road, it remains unclear whether it was dead while the driver sliced off a chunk of the elk's thigh before fleeing the scene.

The accident was not brought to the attention of the authorities until the morning after when a worried calf was seen anxiously running up and down the bank by the ditch.

"It is perhaps not that unusual that people leave the scene of collisions with wild game, but here he had first sliced off a large chunk of the elk's thigh, with what appears to be not insignificant butcher skills. Presumably to take home to eat, or perhaps to give to the dog," Lundin told the newspaper.

The police are reportedly unable to rule the possibility that the more than one person was involved in the incident.

LoooooL. This driver was thinking out of the box. He/she figured the poor animal was dead so why not slice off a leg for a midsummer roast?

ewww .... just eww...

I find humorous that hunters association are refering the driver as immoral when the members of their members kill for game. It is a misplaced claim. The accident had occurred and the ekk has died. It is not a crime as long as as the driver had not exceeded the speed limit.

If the driver had not carved a hind leg out of the dead animal will hunters take the meat to their dinnar table or leave it rot?
13:16 June 23, 2010 by Jes
Come on !

If I hit it and remained alive , I too would slice a bit to celebrate . Aniamals are food . Its funny that he is being accused of stealing by a hunter ." . This hunter should know that he is no position to talk about morals , as some animals rights activsts and vegetarians would tell him .

What is the law regarding animal/car collisions?

Must it be reported? (it seems so if it is being labelled hit and run)

Can the motorist put the animal down if it survives collision?

Can the motorist claim the animal after its death>

The article really should answer these questions.
14:29 June 23, 2010 by Åskar
Disclaimer: I'm in no way an expert on this matter so think of my answers as educated guesses!

Q: What is the law regarding animal/car collisions?

Q. Must it be reported? (it seems so if it is being labelled hit and run)

The law states that the driver must contact the landowner or rather the owner of the hunting rights and as it would be difficult to know who that would be the best thing is to call the police. If you don't it would indeed be labelled as hit and run.

Q Can the motorist put the animal down if it survives collision?

I have no idea what is stated in the law but I suppose it would be a good idea to do it.

Q Can the motorist claim the animal after its death?

No, it's the property of the landowner/hunting rights owner, which is why you have to contact him/her/it.

Anecdote: A cousin of my mother's explained why he always carried a knife thusly: He had once hit and killed a roe deer and when he and the farmer who owned the land came back to the place somebody had removed half the animal, so he decided that the next time he wanted to be the first to do it.
14:53 June 23, 2010 by ooh456
The animal in the picture is not an elk... it's a moose... for chrissakes, How can someone in Sweden not know this? An elk is an animal that looks like a giant deer and lives in the Pacific Northwest of America. Look it up on Wikipedia for chrissakes. It's another case of Brits never admitting they are wrong. Now clean up your goddam oil spill before we drop da bomb on yer limey asses.
15:42 June 23, 2010 by Åskar
@ooh456

The animal in the picture is indeed an elk, Alces alces, älg, Elch, whatever. For some reason the first English speakers that ventured into the American wilderness thought that the big deer (a close relative to the red deer) they came upon was the animal they had never seen but only heard of, the elk, and gave it that name. Later on when they chanced to meet a real elk the name was already taken so they started using a native name instead.

Try to learn some English and some biology before you start whingeing!

In response to some of the silly posts, it should be made clear that hunters believe as a group, in ethical kills.

According to the artcle is was unclear whether the animal had survived the collision when the motorist began butchering it.
17:25 June 23, 2010 by Cage
with the exceptions of the elk and the police officer, all parties mentioned in this story are complete idiots.
17:48 June 23, 2010 by GefleFrequentFlyer
Maybe sweden should just allow more guns and hunting permits. Then swedes wont be forced to kill alg with thier cars and run off with a lump of roast in order to survive!
18:19 June 23, 2010 by Jes
Roger O Thorhill , hunters are as a silly lot that find pleasure in killing as a sport . You just bumped into a thigh -chopper who reminds you that primitivity and ethics should never mix . Maybe , you are bothered that your monopoly is in danger ?

At least the man who chopped off the bit was not out looking some bloody meat . It just fell into his lap.

Also , its silly to speculate that the elk had survived the collision . An elk is not a rabbit that you can just butcher when its still alive .

I envy the man myself. He will not have to pay 349 kr. for I kg of wild meat for a while .

Hope the poor animal was dead when it was butchered but i wonder how old the calf was and would it be able to survive without it's mother ,no one seems to care to mention this .

At ooh456.

You mentioned to look up what an Elk was on Wikipedia.

See the link below and read the first line which states:

The moose (North America) or European elk (Europe) (Alces alces) is the largest extant species in the deer family.

This would not be news anywhere else but in Sweden. Is life that boring in Sweden that this is even a story in the Swedish news?

Geeeze, get a life.
23:27 June 23, 2010 by heroine
The hunter should feel at least lucky because there is still some parts left for him to enjoy....Had I been me, i wouldn't leave much behind. Perhaps only the head, feet and skin for the hunter or how whoever is complaining.
00:12 June 24, 2010 by andycrofts
Must say, if the elk didn't mind a bit of it's leg shaved off, it probably was a bit dead-ish.

Elk's are big buggers, and they won't fit into the average car boot.

"An ex-elk. Shuffled off this Mortal Coil, and gone to join the Choir Invisible" springs to mind.

"Cage" wrote that "with the exceptions of the elk and the police officer, all parties mentioned in this story are complete idiots. "

Disagree. Seems the elk was the complete idiot. It didn't walk away from the scene of the impending barbecue. Did it?

Don't ya just luuuve Darwin??

This is a pure hypocrisy...

They are saying that taking a piece of the animal is immoral. Ok , but what is about taking the lives of thousands of Palestinians by the Israelis? We have not heard Swedish officials say that this is immoral.

We see the chicks blushing for killing an animal, we see emotions when the whales are in danger of extinction, but we don't see emotional when it comes to the barbaric and terroristic Israeli slaughter in Palestine.

Plz stop this hypocrisy. The west should be the last one to talk about human rights and animal rights.

the hunter ...didn't get the thigh for the dinner ...lol
05:08 June 24, 2010 by volvoman9
Please don't insist on confusing hunting and sport. A sport is a contest between two or more similarly equipped individuals on a level playing field.

I have no issue with the consumption of flesh nor the culling of animals, but to call this a sport is akin to playing a game against an unaware opponent and then telling them you just kicked their ass. You want sport then hunt an armed human.

Hunting is no more than grown up manifestation of the infantile desire to dress in military clothing and carry a gun. Call it slaughtering or culling but don't denigrate the word 'sport'.

I live in the American Mecca of hunting and am all too familiar with the type.

And as for At OO 456... YOU ARE THE REASON MOST OF THE WORLD THINKS WE ARE MORONS!!!! BUSH IS GONE! Though I'm quite sure you harbor Sarah Palin fantasies keep them to yourself. The time for American idiots to have a voice is gone. How long did you hillbillies think your reign would last? About as long as your attention spans; that's how long. Go home to your trailer court drink your Bud light and enjoy the inbreeding.

This is tooo awesome!! Hey if the Elk hit him, he's entitled, but if he hit the Elk then it's another story, hehe.

I guess Sweden has now parallel to the southern US. 'What's for dinner honey?...........roadkill again?!?!'

I wonder if he made a nice mushroom sauce to go with it?

in Minnesota its common to claim the animal after calling the police. no waste and less paperwork
11:13 June 24, 2010 by Jes
Did somebody say that hunting is not a sport ?

I would like to know what Mikael Lundin the hunter thinks about this one .

Personally , I have always wondered why some people spend hour trying to catch a fish , only the throw it back into the water after the hook has damaged its mouth . Who protects the right of this fish ?
11:50 June 24, 2010 by christo
one time i was fishing i caught a big fish but i fought with it to get hooked very properly , but it went off, i even fell in the water after seating for 5 hours without any catch,

so this guy saw the elk and if i was him i would have taken 2 legs, wish i was there. the hunters wouldnt have given him any,..

enjoy ure meal lol . i think it was olf, betty, micheal involved, that piece is big hehehe.

its summer go and grill big time

@goodbyeammar

Possibly because the ones being slaughtered are Israelis not so-called Palestinians. Every word you wrote was a lie. Why is it that Israelis are not allowed to respond to daily rocket attacks by bloodthirsty Arabs (aka Palestinians) emulating their false prophet?

When was the last time you heard of an Israeli suicide bomber? Or an Israeli mowing down Arabs with a bulldozer or bus? Or an Israeli kidnapping an Arab family?
20:40 June 25, 2010 by Tutu
what has israel got to do with killing of a elk. i wonder why some people obsessed with Israel.
06:07 July 12, 2010 by goodbyeammar
@ComputerJockey

When you occupy someone, you cannot respond.

It is Palestinians who respond to the Israeli occupation. Israel is an occupying force. so you cannot occupy someone's land, and then when this one, responds with rocket, you cannot call your action against him response.

Israel is a terrorist state which has been occupying Palestine since decades

Israel is supplied from the west with deadly weapons, and uses them to occupy Palestine and slaughter its people, and demolish their houses in order to build Jews settlements for the Jews immigrates (from all over the world- because they believe that god promised them the land of Palestine)...

So Palestinians respond to the Israeli occupation. All people have the right to resist the occupation. this right is guaranteed by the international law. Palestinians do not have weapons to defend themselves, so That's why they use simple homemade rockets and sometimes use their body to face the occupation.

Any Israeli action cannot be called self-defense or response because simply it is all done under the umbrella of occupation. I think you should hide this crude fact because even though the Israeli lobby is strong and attempt to steer the public opinion on behalf of the Israelis, but everyone knows that Israel is occupying Palestine. Everyone knows the truth of the criminal Israeli state!

Will the hunter association pay for the damages to the car? to the driver/passengers. If an animal claimed by a hunter assoc. breaks my car, I should be allowed the animal for compensation. In Canada we must contact police, can't kill the animal, can't take the meat/hide/antlers. Meat might be given by police to homeless shelter/dog kennel/dumped. I wonder if there is ever a shortage of wild meat in the local copper's fridge? LOL!
