Princess Madeleine goes back to work

Published: 30 Jun 10 13:41 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/27526/20100630/

Princess Madeleine has returned to work after taking a time out following her breakup from ex-fiancé Jonas Bergström.

Twenty-eight-year-old Madeleine will attend her first official event since the separation was announced in late April, hosting a charity gala in London for her mother's organisation Childhood, according to the Expressen daily.

"We are glad that she is coming," Childhood USA executive director Charlotte Brandin told the newspaper. "We will have paying guests who want to know more about the organisation."

Madeleine will represent Sweden and Childhood at the function. Around 200 people are invited and there will be dancing, dinner and a charity auction.

Madeleine travelled to the US at the end of April to fulfil a series of engagements and to escape the media glare after revelations over Bergström's alleged dalliance with a Norwegian handball player.

Calls from the palace to leave the princess in peace as she adjusted to life without her erstwhile fiancé fell on deaf ears, however, as Scandinavian media were joined at Newark International Airport by international paparazzi photographers.

Princess Madeleine's engagement book was scheduled to keep her in the US until May 9th, with a lengthy spell at the World Childhood Foundation, an organization founded by her mother Queen Silvia, ending with the trip to Seattle.

However, a heartbroken Madeleine never made the trip to Seattle, with Crown Princess Victoria attending instead. Last month, the Royal Court confirmed that the princess had decided to take a time out from official engagements before attending her sister's wedding.

Madeleine returned to Sweden just days before the June 19th nuptials, but appeared in good spirits as she enjoyed the day in the glare of the Swedish public and the world's media.

Princess Madeleine, and Bergström, a 31-year-old Stockholm lawyer announced their engagement in August. The news took many royal watchers in Sweden by surprise coming so soon following her big sister's news. The pair announced their split in late April after an often-stormy eight-year relationship.

aaah, the poor dear. She only needed 3 months off work. Maybe we can all claim a broken heart as a reason for bunking off work?

OH the Nine, I am also sooo pissed for this.

I suggest we put Madde to work at Mc donalds to finance her lifestyle and understand the meaning of working.

Okay all you negative, naysayers out there. Your being jealous because your not born royal is showing and it is disgusting. You hate supporting a princess who was born to the position by the way but maybe you need to hear how many princes and princesses and queens and kings I support. Oh how I wish there was only 2 princesses to support who promote Sweden in a great way around the world. They help bring in trade, promote goodwill, peace, industry, charity and the list of good things goes on and on. What do I support, a bunch of lazy low life back stabbing, lying, cheating men and women who could care less about taking care of my country (USA). They are members of congress and the oval office. Not oneof them promotes America, not one of them cares about my country as long as their pockets are full of taxpayer money. They ride in limos, travel 1 class, have private dinning rooms, go on fact finding trips which is suppose to promote our industry but instead they play golf and more golf, drink on hell of a lot of booze, take their mistresses or wives and go shopping and do more shopping all on my dollar. What od I get for all of this, well I get my social security cut (seems they need the money more then me so they can go on another vacation) cut my medical so that I can't get the basic medical needs met, raise my taxes (seems I don't pay enough because the poor people in this country don't count) and I really hate what they did with my money in bailing out the damn banks because the banks can't balance their own books. Why one banker bought a $87,000.00 rug for his office with taxpayer money. I read a lot of history books and I really think that this country should do what the french did at one time, chop off some heads and let the real people run my country. Bet by now you think that I am pretty p..............off at what is going on here. Your right I am and I do write letters to congressmen, my president, and newspapers and they all go un answered as I expected. If at any time one of want to trade places with me and move to America and pay my high taxes and I will gladly come to Sweden and pay taxes to support someone who loves their country and wants what is best for Sweden, then just let me know.

@ Sherian, you're right about one thing. Many Swedes are negative naysayers. But as for the rest, that's more an individual thing don't you think? There is no real basis for Royal or non Royal blood. It's historically significant preserve. Your being jealous because your not a boozer / banker / golfers mistress or wife is also showing. You put so much black ink about their lifestyles and not caring about America. Royals also abuse their position and don't give a flying fish about America. The ability to be good or bad runs in all out veins, Royal or not. The difference is in accountability. If you rob a bank you go to jail, If the bank robs you, you stay poor, they stay rich. That's your system of capitalism. the Swedes on the other hand have a conservative socialist economy, & many there don't understand why they have to support a Capitalist Monarchy. It is very common there for people to escape accountability behind a cloud of misunderstanding. The Royal advisors know this oh too well while the family sip Dom P at their holiday castle in San Tropez. So please don't be so harsh on the Jealous Naysayers. After all, it's only Sweden.

Sherian... Do you often wonder why you don't receive replies from your congressman, governor, president,

Are you checking your spelling and editing of your letters before sending.

High taxes in the US.... Hello, what country are you living in, you must be pretty well self financed or earning a hell of a buck to be paying such high levels of tax within the US. Are you aware of the tax brackets within Sweden? Don't get me wrong I agree with what you're saying about your homeland being a cesspool of urban squaller where politicians say one thing but do another, but aren't you generalising just a little. I can name a number of influential members of congress not to mention others in governor or mayoral roll that are doing so much to promote eco friendly views, trade and cultural exchange within the US. Annise Parker, the openly gay Mayor of Houston Texas, Phill Gordon Mayor of Phoenix Arizona a new age human rights activist, the lists goes on, note I won't be including the Governator of California in this list.

As for your view of returning to the past and beheading those in the wrong, check your history books......maybe even check the history a little closer to your homeland ....or...are you just another sepo intent on sponsoring capital punishment? (Which is exactly what your taxes are paying for plus the 1 million plus inmates crowding US prisons with no hope of rehabilitation.)

As for the naysayers remark, I really think you have no idea of the roll of royalty within Sweden, perhaps you could provide an example of the 'Great Promotions' performed by the royals on official visits, I think you will find their lifestyle on par with that of the New York socialites and governors children's in your homeland. Don't get me wrong, they draw attention in the press but often for the wrong reasons, can you name a print median that publicises the good work being performed, without commenting on the style or social calendar within the same article, are you aware of the payments Familjen Bernadotte receive each year from Swedish Tax payers to perform their official rolls? it easily out numbers what your congressmen are receiving in salary or as kick backs. As for the bankers. Well what can we say except they were working within the guidelines set out by your Capitalist cash loving state department. Taking advantage of the backwards idea of debt equalling prosperity and growth, what a joke. Your responsible for that, take an interest in your own home grown problems before passing judgement on an issue you are clearly ill-informed on.

I don't wish to comment on Royalty. However, I am a native born American and adoptive Swede with a passport. What caught me here is the side discussion about writing letters. I'd like to make a comparison regarding accessibility.

By nature, I am a letter writer. Until I left the U.S. in 2004, I was an inveterate letter writer to elected representatives on all levels, especially local. I can honestly say that the vast majority of my letters were answered, if not always to my satisfaction. Sometimes I received a form letter with a signature. But many times, I received thoughtful, detailed letters which addressed my concerns in a factual and honest way. Some of these I still have.

I have given up writing letters here because only one time out of maybe 25 has a letter been answered. In that case, the response was condescending and deceitful.

It has long been my belief that democracy is a discussion. It's loud, large and disorderly in the U.S. and it is frequently debatable what is accomplished. But to some extent, one can be heard. I cannot honestly say that here. People vote, but after that they are expected to shut up.

I was brought to this article because of the beautiful princess. Sweden's royalty does have its purpose. I decided to post a response to the comments I read. If this was an American website I would not be reading the comment section since there are plenty of people to discuss all points of view & experience in the American hemisphere. Since the princess is young and attracts a younger demographic news reader I thought it would be appropriate to bring some personal insight into some of the comments made for non-North Americans.

Instead of writing in proper essay form, I will make it easier for everyone learning English by responding, to comments made, in somewhat of a point form format that my Detroit, Michigan born history teacher asked of her high school history students:

CHARITY EVENTS

Many purposes. Source of funding and social gathering for the established and concerned do-gooders. News media do not get elbowed or their toes stepped on. Very rarely is there bad publicity from charity events (I added this comment because The Local is a news website).

U.S. GOVERNING SYSTEM

Started to improve with the recent election of a presidential candidate that accepted money from the people instead of the corporations for his election campaign, there are exceptions though; such as, having your email to the White House bounce back to Canada, as opposed to classy Buckingham Palace sending an instant reply in the form of an acknowledgement receipt. The King's choice for Nobel prize was a good decision.

U.S. PRISON SYSTEM or REHABILATATION

Not speaking from experience, but, it started to improve but will not greatly improve until a name change occurs; such as, Ontario's Correctional Centres. Take the social "badness" status out of being in prison then there will be more improvements and less crime, because no bad boy criminal wants to wear a pink dress in a Correctional Centre.

BANK ROBBING PEOPLE'S SAFE DEPOSIT BOX

It happened to me in Canada. The Queen is coming.

If it wasn't for the princess then many insights, in the form of comments, would not have been continentally known. You see, Sweden's royalty indirectly brought understanding to The Local's readership.

Do Swedes like Canadians?
