Sweden's Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's popularity has dipped as a result of the resignation of employment minister Sven Otto Littorin amid allegations that he bought sex in 2006, a new survey by Sifo shows.

In the Sifo survey, published in the Aftonbladet tabloid which exposed the allegations against Littorin, 18 percent of respondents said that their confidence in Fredrik Reinfeldt has fallen after the affair.

In a further survey, by the Expressen daily and conducted by Demoskop, 31 percent of respondents claimed that their confidence in Reinfeldt had declined.

Confidence in the Alliance government has also fallen, by 32 percent in the Expressen/Demoskop survey.

Despite the figures, the vast majority of respondents - 62 and 65 percent respectively - responded that their confidence in the government remained unchanged.

Both studies show that it is primarily voters who vote for the opposition parties who had lost confidence in both the prime minister and the government.

The two studies were carried out on Monday with the Sifo study involving 1,000 people, and the Demoskop poll involving 752 people in an internet panel.

Aftonbladet on July 10th published allegations from a 30-year-old woman who claimed to have sold sex to Sven Otto Littorin prior to his appointment as a minister in 2006. The newspaper has also claimed that Littorin resigned his post a day after he was challenged to comment on the allegations.

Sven Otto Littorin has since denied the allegations and Fredrik Reinfeldt has denied any knowledge of them saying only that the ex-minister gave "several reasons" for his departure from the government.

How pathetic is that. It has totally nothing to do with Reinfeldt.
16:10 July 13, 2010 by the fonz
Can someone please explain what on earth this has got to do with Reinfeldt?
20:49 July 13, 2010 by Justease
Maybe Reinfeldt knew about Littorin and his sexköp and all that. Maybe he tried to cover up. Maybe, kanske
21:37 July 13, 2010 by miss79
yep justease, i think reindfeldt pretend nothing happen..maybe.. afterall, littorin is his best friend..i am sure he knows something too..but bcoz he is a minister, so he pretend not to know anything
21:51 July 13, 2010 by glamelixir
Yeah, true... maybe he had nothing to do with it... anyhow I wonder why doesn't his dirty private oil business put some stains in his popularity.

If he wins, let's meet in this forum in 10 years and you will tell me where did Sweden as we knew it went.

Why does The Local call Aftonbladet a "tabloid" but Expressen a "daily"?

Both are tabloids.

Can the writer of the article please comment about their choice of words here?

I think that some believe it calls into question Reinfledt's judgement - this is the 3rd minister to resign for scandals involving criminal activity and the 4th Minister to be involved in a scandals in no case has Reinfeldt acted decisively but dithers and makes evasive statements:

- Maria Borelius - resigned after 8 as Trade Minister days after scandals involving TV licence evasion. hiring illegal workers and tax evasion - her family has alos benefited directly from policies as a relative owns the Attendo Care group

- Cecilia Stegö Chilòs - resinged after 10 days as culture Minister after acandals involving TV licence evasion - which made her porfolio as responsible for SVT problematic

- Tobias Billström - recently promoted to Employment Minister after Littorin was another scandals of TV licence evasion

- Littorin - even before this scandal was caught in a lie after it was found that he bought his 'MBA' from the internet

It's because it is clear that Reinfeldt attempted to cover up and lied in his statements about what he knew and when in the Littorin saga - he has made so many contradictory and evasive answers since the scandal began:

- Reinfledt's early statements supported Littorins 'spending time with the family spin'

- then a few days later he changes his story to saying that he knew that there were 'several reasons' behind Littorin's resignation

- then when the sex thing broke he changes his story again to saying that he knew about the sex-buy allegations but believed Littorin's innocence

- when pressed by the media he became very evasive and started disacussing himself and Littorin in the 3rd person - along the lines of 'a Prime Minister automatically believes what his employment Minister says' ,,,,, hmmmm

In many ways the fact that Littorin and Reinfeldt have got them into this situation is strange as Littorin is formerly a PR director with crisis management as one of his specialisms ......

i wonder why people think that sex is for free - you always get to pay the woman somehow even if she were your wife. sex is negotiated and it sucks to find so many sanctimonious jerks whining about Littorin. there is something wrong with the laws in Sweden and until that is fixed, you'll continue to have such nonsensical issues distracting public officers and private citizens at that. and talk about the timing of this story, it was clearly intended to disrupt the political campaigns ahead of the elections.
01:35 July 14, 2010 by jackx123
this must surely be a smear campaign from the opposition.... the timing is perfect.

it happened in 2006, why wait till 4 years after???? and only weeks away from the election - the whole thing stinks.
