Summertime is here and Stockholm has been experiencing some record high temperatures. But there is no need to leave the the big smoke to beat the heat - the city is teeming with hot places to take a cool dip, whatever your style might be. Emy Gelb has been checking them out.

View Stockholm's best bathing spots in a larger map

1. The classic city swimming spot is Långholmen, a tiny island located just off of Sodermalm. The island, which is also home to an old converted jail, is a go-to spot for balmy summer days. The island features a family friendly sand beach, with stunning views of the Västerbron bridge and Kungsholmen. Ice cream and showers add to the allure of the easily accessible escape, and the packed island draws a diverse, all ages crowd. If a busy scene isn’t your thing, take a walk towards the end of the island and explore the quiet cliffs, peaceful parks, and calm coves that are much more private and relaxed. Långholmen offers something for everyone, and is the perfect place for an afternoon dip after work. T-Bana: Hornstull.

2. Another popular spot for families is Smedsuddsbadet, a large sandy beach found on the shores of Rålambshov Park, in Mariaberg. It’s also easily accessible, just under Västerbron bridge on the Kungsholmen side. T-Bana: Fridhemsplan.

3. There is also an abundance of smaller docks around the city that draw a younger, hip crowd. One spot that is particularly cool is Reimersholme, another island right off of Södermalm. Tattooed teenagers and trendy twenty-somethings take advantage of the island’s green space for sunbathing and the several docks for diving into busy canals. It is a spectacular spot, with views of Liljeholmen and Söder. Boats and people pass by often; and unlike the peaceful beach at Långholmen, Reimersholme truly feels like swimming in the middle of the city. T-Bana: Hornstull.

4. Another great spot for young people looking not only to swim, but to also scope out a hot scene, are the cliffs of Fredhäll in Kristineberg. The Metro paper ranked this spot the best place to mingle, it a flirt friendly and fun atmosphere. The lack of a sandy beach keep most families with younger kids away; there are only high cliffs to dive from, so make sure that you are a good swimmer if you go here. T-Bana: Kristineberg.

5. For those looking for an adventure of another sort, take the bus out towards Drottningholm, get off before the palace on the island of Kärsön, and walk across the golden fields into the nature reserve where private cliffs and coves await you. This spot is off the beaten path and recommended for those wanting something out of the ordinary; beware though, there is a rumored nudist colony hidden out there as well.

I thought that every beach in Sweden would be a nudist beach! How wrong I was... What's with the "beware" about it possibly being nudist?

So you don't end up like my then 12 yr old brother, the first time we went to a Swedish beach in 2001. He walked with his head down and hands around his eyes like blinders so he wouldn't see all the topless women! :D

Now somebody might want to rephrase the caption of this article. Using direct translations such as in this case "Bada" to "bathing" can alter the original meaning. The english word 'bath' aptly describes the act of cleaning or making the body clean by submerging in water and using cleaning agents such as soap or shower gel. In essense, the ultimate goal of taking a bath is to clean oneself, unlike what the caption tries to communicate. People DO NOT go to the beach to take baths (at least not in Sweden). They rather go there to swim or take a dip. The Local is a great place for me (as a Non native Swedish speaker) but i usually get carried aback, by the careless language errors and gross typos. For a professional online paper, i would say this is causing your credibility to take a dip.

Pedant's corner:

@makaveli

"Bathing" (from bathe, not bath) actually means to take a dip. So that's correct and is not a typo.

However, also in the intro, it should be teeming, not teaming.

I didn't get any further than that in the article as I'm in Skåne and couldn't give a toss where 08ers bathe.

@Skånedave

I looked that up "bathe" and i gotta admit you are right. Thanks.

Hej Merican,

if you want to bath in the nude, you have to go to Germany. There you can bath nude in the lakes on beaches and in most spots noone cares :)

I wonder where this wrong image of Swedes comes from .The even have saunas seperated for the sexes (something not common in Germany) and they sometimes wear swimwear in them --

Another good swimming spot is Kanaanbadet in Bromma.

Swedes seem to have been overly influenced by the Anglo-American mores in recent decades. When I first came to Stockholm 28 years ago, on a sunny summer's day every bit of green space would be filled with topless women catching the rare rays during their lunch breaks. By the water on the archipelago, skinny-dipping was very commonplace.

I have watched with regret over the past decades, as Sweden has become more uptight in this regard, more like the United States and less Continental. I am not sure where this new prudishness came from, but my guess is that it goes hand-in-hand with the number of McDonalds and American TV shows.

I can remember going to a park near the Stockholm center where topless bathing was common, but this was in the mid 80's. Maybe some of the readers know the name of the park. Seems like always some sort of activity was going on like exercising and work out. I have not visited Sweden in over 18 years so many social changes have occured I am sure.

@Kamikaze #7 "my guess is that it goes hand-in-hand with the number of McDonalds and American TV shows"

in that case, Thank you Mcdonald's and American TV.

Not sure what your concept of "continental" is, but in Italy, Spain, Greece and Portugal topless women are frowned upon. Even in Frence, it is less common than before. Besides, topless French breasts are less off-putting than the swinging melons you see here.
