Sweden's Lars Lagerback has turned down an offer to continue coaching the Nigerian football team, the national football federation (NFF) confirmed on Friday.

NFF president Aminu Maigari said that Lagerbäck told him he did not wish to
continue in his post despite being offered a four-year deal, with Samson Siasia being lined up as a replacement.

"Lagerbäck told me he could not continue as the coach of the Super Eagles
because he feared that he might not be able to pen a four-year deal that would keep him in Nigeria for that long," Maigari told sports daily Soccer Star.

"He thanked the NFF for the opportunity given him to take the Eagles to the
World Cup. He said the experience was worth it and that he would always
remember Nigeria and her good people."

Maigari added that Lagerbäck told him that his family played a big role in his decision not to extend his five-month contract. Lagerback was in charge when Nigeria finished bottom of their first round group at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

However, the NFF agreed to hand the Swede a long-term deal on the evidence of the work he put in within a short time. The NFF top official also disclosed that Siasia will next month be confirmed as the country's new coach on a four-year contract.

"We have had talks with Siasia. The talks have been fruitful and all things being equal, he will put pen to paper next month subject to negotiations," said Maigari. "Siasia is the coach Nigerians want and we shall give him all the support to succeed in this new job."

Siasia led the national team to the final of both the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup as well as the 2008 Olympics. The former Lokeren and Nantes striker is currently handling Heartland FC of Owerri in the CAF Champions League.

The NFF also announced that caretaker coach Austin Eguavoen will lead Nigeria to next month's friendly against South Korea in Seoul before taking
over the Olympic team.

Rather stupid of Lagercrap, who else is going to give him a job? Maybe he can do football commentry on Swedish tv, its about all hes good for.
12:40 July 23, 2010 by G Kin
I am suprise they wanted to keep him for up to 4 years!.

He is old school. If he doesn't know that by now, too bad for him. His coaching career is over :(
14:50 July 23, 2010 by bob3000
Let's face it would you want to live in Nigeria for 4 years? I have been there (Lagos), we had a greeter at the airport and an armed escort to the hotel, which was protected by armed guards.

4 days was too long. On the streets we saw people walking hyenas on big chains, amongst other things.

On top of that, he was probably worried about not getting paid. The NFF seems to have patchy record on payments.

Can any sane person question his decision?
15:28 July 23, 2010 by Texrusso
@Bob3000, you very funny :) lol! By the way it is not common for people walk Hyenas on big chains in Nigeria or else where in Africa. Only a few isolated cases have been reported :) in a few areas. Nigeria is rich enough to pay him and expecially in such high profile case like this with lots of media attention, am sure he gets prompts and timely payment. So points are not really not valid.

and so for the record lagerback or whatever was paid five months upfront in his last deal he signed.and he earned more than what the Swedish prime minister earns in a month.i think one of Nigerian"s highest earners for five months.i think Nigerian"s should save that money and get good coach for themselves.good the thief in the NFF will not be able to steal from home-made i guess so they keep looking for foreign coach
16:52 July 23, 2010 by eddie123
for the record, lars was paid 300K USD a month by Nigeria. that is the equivalent of his annual salary as coach of Sweden. His salaries were paid upfront and need i add, were a bonanza of sorts.

the NFF does not expect foreign coaches to reside in Nigeria. most coaches are encouraged to spend at least 10 days per month in the country to observe the domestic league and hold coaching clinics were appropriate.

@bob3000... when you do not understand the culture and way of life of a people, you had better ask or pay close attention to learn about it. and when you do learn, don't judge that experience with your narrow frame of reference.

there are thousands of foreigners residing in Nigeria and carrying on with life without the heightened sense of paranoia you portray. if you saw a hyena, it was a circus. if you have police escorts, that's called security.

and the average Nigerian is glad that Lars isn't coming back. he earned too much money for the job he was doing. even Swedes have complained about the high wages a third world country was willing to pay to Lars.

lastly, the swedish tax office should check on Lars to ensure he paid taxes on the sum. Nigeria rarely takes taxes from foreign employees and when they do, it is usually a mere 4 or 5 percent.

a coach who spent only a few months and had favourite players and hated some;thereby causing discord amongst players.A coach who made the worst substitution during the world cup;i i mean worst experimentation. Why should such a coach get an extended contract?!Woe unto that NFF glass house if they refuse to change."Leg'aback "sorry Nigeria does not need someone like you!Bye forever to the national team of Nigeria!

why is it that any topic about football in Nigeria attracts lots of comments in TL?
23:51 July 23, 2010 by vicarno
@bob3000, why are you exposing your ignorance. For your information more than 100 thousand expat reside and work in Nigeria. Secondly, people walking hyenas on big chains in Lagos????? You must be kidding..... well as eddie123 cautioned.... when you do not understand the culture and way of life of a people, you had better ask or pay close attention to learn about it.

Thing is that I suspect Lagerback was ask to resign because thats the most lucrative contract for him. Ignore the Swedish media hype. How on earth can he ever turn down such a contract that goes with a five star hotel, regular first class flights to and from Sweden etc.

i can see how myopic you are in thinking.

the only world you know is Europe.

these forum are for intellectual to brain storm and not for opportunist.

Lagerback went to Nigeria for 2 things :

1. He went to put a Swedish face in the World Cup

2. He went to snatch quick money and run back to Sweden

Sven did the same .

Any who is wondering why both these men turned down the job offers does not know that prostitutes operate like that .

@bob3000

if a man can live with 190 cats , another man can have a hyena for a pet, yeah ?
13:03 October 22, 2010 by bob3000
Regardless of the defensive comments posted and the claims of experience/cultural myopia, etc.

I travel to different countries, globally, on a regular basis and enjoy it.

My observations are valid - I merely described what I saw. I have pictures to prove it. I experienced them.

(@Jes, I never the guy walking his 190 cats down the street - pls feel free to share that pic).

I have friends and family who have worked in Nigeria and other countries, on the African continent at different times during the last 30 years - I did not comment without knowledge about the country, the culture, both positive and negative.

Often expats (from all nations, not just NA & EU) take the risk and hope the cash will compensate for the conditions, but it is a value judgement, I fail to see how it in anyway can be analogised with prostitution

- I guess Lagerbäck fed the cash-risk assessment into the ration and saw it was not worth it.

Berti Vogts' experience, etc. etc.

Google, if you want some background reading.

@obioradiwe

"these forum are for intellectual to brain storm and not for opportunist."

- hilarious, really gut busting.
