Over 650 travellers from Sweden stranded in Iraq

Travel agency Flyhome, which was founded last year, had advertised "ethnic flights" as its specialty and arranged trips to Lebanon and Iraq from Sweden, with immigrants from those countries as its main target.

On Wednesday, the company declared bankruptcy and slightly more than 650 people are currently stranded in Iraq.

"There are not very many assets left in the bankruptcy estate, so room to manoeuvre for me as a trustee is very small," said lawyer Lennart Landrén. "I believe that those who bought tickets but did not get to fly will not have priority when it comes to demands from the bankruptcy."

There is a clear indication that the passengers will not get any money back or compensation flights from the company.

"Those who are stranded can now turn to the Transport Agency [Transportstyrelsen] and the Consumer Agency [Konsumentverket] and discuss the situation that has arisen," said Landrén.

"It is a sad statement to make," he added. "According to the information I have received, there are no guarantees provided."

The airline wrote on its website that the reason behind the bankruptcy is an earlier dispute with airline Primera Air, which forced Flyhome to repay millions of kronor to travellers who were not permitted to fly to Iraq because it did not have permission for flights to Iraq.

The incident occurred at the end of June, when 150 passengers on the way to Erbil in northern Iraq, the capital of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region, had to turn back at Gothenburg's Landvetter Airport.

Another 450 passengers were stranded in Beirut on Wednesday while awaiting their return to Sweden. Flyhome said on its website that travellers with tickets from Beirut to Gothenburg would fly home later on Wednesday evening.

As to whether the report on the website was true, Landrén said, "I do not know. The representative says that it is true, but whether it is true or not, I do not know."

The owner of the company was not available for comment on Wednesday.

"From what I understand, the business had already ceased operation one week before the bankruptcy," Landrén said.

I wonder how many of those "stranded" are living as asylum seekers in europe, claiming that their lives would be in danger if returned to Iraq, a good many I suspect!!!
13:36 July 29, 2010 by Kaethar
Exactly. The Swedish government should volunteer to help and then withdraw the residency permits of anyone found to be lying in their asylum claims.

What sort of nutjob goes to Iraq for a holiday?
14:25 July 29, 2010 by Twiceshy
Local legends about cemetery-dwelling "Ghouls" have been reported in the media but have no actual basis in fact and are merely the insane ramblings of farmers who have imbibed too much beet wine. Visitors to our peaceful town are as safe as can be and don't have to worry about being disappeared in the night by stinking cannibal fiends.

Please consider Creepsylvania the next time you plan a vacation!

@ Nemisis

A masochistic nutjob, no doubt. Adventure is one thing, but this is foolishness; to go to one of the most dangerous places on earth voluntarily.
14:31 July 29, 2010 by Nemesis
@ 2394040

If people are going there for a holiday, it could not be that dangerous.

If any of these people turn out to be asylum seekers returning home for a vacation, they should be deported back to there immediately as it is clearly safe.

Nemesis, another surprise for you: Three US passport holders, who happened to be Iranians originally, were on a visit to Iraq and were caught by Iranian boarder guardrs after they discovered in Iranian territory.

The US is claiming that they are genuine turists and that Iran should let them go. Iran believes they are spies. I find it difficult to belive their claim!

'Swedes' trapped as tourists in Iraq or as journalists in The Horn or as goodness knows what in Pakistan. When will this charade end? When will naive Swedes realise this is a sham by bogus asylum seekers. Afghanistan holiday brochures, anyone ?

Flying on a low class airline to Iraq. Sounds like a recipe for trouble free travel.

People around here seem to think that just because we have the ability to, it is their right to fly anywhere they want and then ask the goverment to get them back when it all goes wrong.

Take some responsility.
18:37 July 31, 2010 by wenddiver
Actually, Iraq is probably less dangerous than New Orleans, Detroit, LA, Chicago or Brooklyn and has the advantage of a wealth of Archeology sites and History. You might want to go with a large University group that has arranged security.

Any asylum seekers flying there have proven their original claims were lies and should not be let back into Europe.
