Faked illnesses netted fraudsters 75 million

A social insurance fraud ring in southern Sweden is thought to have stolen about 75 million kronor ($10.5 million) from Sweden’s social security system by faking serious illnesses. In many cases, the frauds involved entire families.

The claims come after a 32-year-old man who employed an assistant to help him cope with cerebral palsy, was shown to be completely fit.

The fraud centres on a company in Halmstad which provided personal assistants to people with disabilities. Police say they suspect that twelve people supposedly being cared for by assistants supplied by the company were in fact using it as a front to siphon off money from the state.

“They’ve had the same modus operandi in each case. Parents, relatives or friends have been employed. They’ve declared working hours and taken out money,” said Karl-Arne Ockell at Halland police.

The company was responsible for processing wages and receipts, providing significant incomes to a large number of people for every supposed patient.

A family falsely claiming to have three disabled children was paid 500,000 kronor per month. In another case a couple were paid 220,000 per month each to care for a man with cerebral palsy, despite the fact that one of the supposed carers was simultaneously working in a pizzeria.

All those involved in the fraud were foreign citizens. The 41-year-old owner of the company had recruited willing accomplices with medical histories that were hard to trace. This made it easier for him to fool the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).

“If you were born in Sweden and have lived here your whole life, then you know it’s not true if you suddenly say in your twenties that you have cerebral palsy,” said Ockell.

The 41-year-old, who lives in Malmö, was recently jailed for two-and-a-half years for aggravated fraud and aggravated false welfare fraud.

Police calculate that his company had an annual turnover of between 15 and 18 million kronor for the past five years, meaning he defrauded the state of a total of around 75 million kronor.

500,000 kr per month ?????? kick those useless immigrants out !!
19:32 August 4, 2010 by Ålänning
I'm an immigrant involved in the promotion of diversity and integration but when i hear such ungrateful deeds by my fellow immigrants it just kills my spirits. How can we behave like wild animals. Generally i have no respect for selfish, greedy and ungrateful people. They should be kicked out of Sweden! 75 million of tax payers money to useless idiots!!!

Ha Ha Ha I always tell Migrationsverket kills Sweden. They easy give PUT for these people. But if you honesty worker you alweys be paperlösa!!!
23:34 August 4, 2010 by tuerd1982
Because of such bad several immigrants, many Swedes and foreign people have a negative attitude toward them. Lucky enough I met mostly good immigrants during my stay in Sweden.

I agree Vitas on the aspect of migrationboard. In my opinion, migrationboard doesn't work well. The immigration policy they had implemented are really awful. Look at US and Canada, how they look at peoples, knowledge, value and their potential to contribute society. In Sweden, they work as a hypocrite in some way. I mean, in the very beginning they doesn't planned and thought carefully for immigration. They just accepted all the people who just fill the form, but now they and other bureau start to complain about series of problems which related to immigrants.

All those involved in the fraud were foreign citizens.

Could there ever have been any doubts?
09:16 August 5, 2010 by apostolos1975
Can they be deported after doing jail time even if they have PUT or if they have gotten citizenship? Or are we stack with these lowlifes for ever?
10:04 August 5, 2010 by krattan
Red in other media that at least some of the people were to be deported to Irak after serving their sentence.
11:27 August 5, 2010 by Rey Stockholm
You havela also to balme the authorities for poor controls, paying out SEK 50000 without checking is also criminal
12:39 August 5, 2010 by Audrian
Every poulation group, be it an immigrant group or local population, suffers from a certain proportion of criminality. I bet those caught red handed are not the only foreign criminals in Sweden. This does not mean that all immigrant population group is criminal. The same way that all Swedish people are not criminals just because there are thieves and rapist among them!

The social duty of refugees or foreign residents is to expose those criminals when they come across them. If the above mentioned criminals were exposed this way congradulatation is in order.

i think he should be deported and all his belongings taken by the police, because of this ashole all ppl with black hair get illtreated in hospitals etc. and now ppl with real problems dont get help!!!
14:26 August 5, 2010 by wifey
@ occassional

Those were EXACTLY my first thoughts!

Deport them!
14:34 August 5, 2010 by Swedesmith
Does jail time count toward the citizenship requirement?
16:34 August 5, 2010 by cathk
550 000 kr for 3 children per month. surely this cannot be correct. if each child had a full time proffessional docter they would not be paying nearly that amount and surly they are not recieving treatments worth hundreds of thousends every month. sounds like who ever processes these claims is in on this fraud also. and to think that is tax payers money!!!! it is completely rediculous
20:27 August 5, 2010 by vicarno
This story does not sound very credible, how can a family get 550,000 kr per month, please can someone who has a good knowledge about forsakringkassan clarify this for me..........Is it ever possible?

There was one case a few month ago about a guy who tried to scam in a similar way. The 550,000 kr per month could due high costs carers, as was with a guy mentioned abowe.

I would not be too sure, either, of the credibility of many articles with anonymous authors. For as long as people are debating and arguing about a topic it is not being resolved or fixed it seems.

That said, I find it absolutely appalling that so many Swedes think it is acceptable to allow so many in to the country to receive benefits, which often are taken advantage of, and then more so, find it even more acceptable to make it's own natural citizens pay for the mistakes by having their safety nets stolen from them!

"Sweden is a veritable smorgåsbord for UK business. I see our work as a bit like a kind of dragon’s den for both for larger and smaller British companies. It is about matching the UK companies, not with cash, but with Swedish market opportunities." READ »
