Swede faces massive fine over Swiss speeding

Police in Switzerland said Monday that they had seized a Swedish motorist's $240,000 sports car after he was caught doing 290 kilometres per hour (180 mph) on a Swiss motorway.

Swiss officials were unable to say if it was a record because they do not keep such nationwide data, but it "looks very close to one," federal roads office spokesman Thomas Rohrbach told AFP.

Police in the western canton of Fribourg said in a statement that the 37 year-old driver had to be stopped by a neighbouring police force last Friday after he shot past a permanent speed trap.

His driving licence and 570-horsepower black Mercedes-Benz were seized after he was released from custody, and he could face a fine of up to one million Swiss francs ($962,000) depending on his income.

A local magistrate ordered police to keep the car as security pending a likely court ruling and an eventual sentence.

Driving more than 25 kilometres an hour over the 120-kilometre speed limit on motorways in Switzerland is regarded as a criminal offence, and fines are based on a driver's income.

The Swedish motorist's alleged speed goes off the scale and the penalty is at the judge's discretion, up to a maximum of 1.08 million Swiss francs for speeding, Rohrbach said.

290KPH on a Swiss motorway.

Sounds more like the driver needs to be put in a funny farm.

Francis is wicked strict on foreigners as well. Always remember that when driving in France they hold the car until the fine is paid. No messing there either.

The envious part of me says he deserves it... and hopes he has to pay the full fine.

The rebel part of me cheers for the dude and knows with the kind of car he was driving, he can afford a big shot lawyer to have a chance at beating the charge.

Wow the young man is envious of Michael Schumacher...lol

I am sure the Swiss officials are more upset that the guy even came all the way from Sweden to mess with their motorway why not Swedish motorway.

Well....sounds like a rich boy to own such a bloody machine. Dont worry he will pay......

You gotta wonder why he didn't just wait till he was (back) in Germany - Swede going to Switzerland or back would pass quite a few nice roads with no speed limits at all on the way....

Makes me wonder what kind of cars the Swiss police were driving that enabled them to catch him. Probably not Volvo station wagons. Spoiled brat should be locked away. He could have killed loads of people. Still, I wonder what it would have been like to be passed by him.

A nine hundred and sixty two thousand dollars fine for speeding?

Had he endangered others as one commenter pointed out, why are there no speed limits on certain sections of the German Autobahn, or on the Autostrada in the Sud Tyrol of Italy?

Apparently they do not value life as much as the Swiss, or they do not believe in million dollar fines for speeding?

There are supposedly limits enforced of late on the Autostrada, but I will believe that when I see them in action doing so. Othewise, high-end Italian sport cars costing five times as much as the Mercedes in question regularly exceed that speed.

The Bristol Motors sport car can travel even faster, and costs nearly as much as the Swiss fine.

What is the purpose of having any automobile go as fast as 220 mph when speed limits are usually never above 85 mph?

Is that so certain Nations can make speeding a felony that will allow them to dole out million dollar fines?

In Sweden speed limits only seem to apply where there are speed cameras, otherwise a large fraction of the law abiding Swedes regularly speed and tailgate dangerously.

Sweden has very good roads but some very bad drivers.

Can't blame him. Might have been running from his Swedish wife ;)

@engagebrain (what brain?)

Go Swede bash somewhere else. How do you know that it's Swedish people who speed?

anyway....i think people drive way to slow here in Stockholm, the slowbie monkeys jam up the motorway every afternoon ^^

if swede drink coca cola in swiss this will be news,,,,,if swede do anything very small thing it will come on news huh

What's the big deal? In Norway they have the same system, pay as you earn... And as a German I can say, that in theory you can drive as fast as you want to on the Autobahn, but have you ever been in the traffic jams? Anybody who does more than 200 in the day on the Autobahn is sort of suicidal.

Not to long ago another Swede was caught speeding on the Autobahn, in Hamburg doing 190 in a 100 zone... I suppose that even if there are only 9 million swedes, there must be some black sheep...

And I don't think that Swedes are very good drivers, most of them are very slow (in reaction time), and do tailgate a lot on the road...

Why was he driving like a manic in normal roads designated for normal speed?

The police car on the left looks like a Volvo to me. :D Not sure if that is the car they used to pull the Swede over though.
