The Medical Products Agency (Läkemedelsverket) began an inquiry on Wednesday into vaccinations for swine flu made by British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline suspected of provoking narcolepsy.

"The MPA has received six reports from health care professionals regarding narcolepsy as suspected adverse drug reaction following Pandemrix flu vaccination," it said in a statement.

"The agency will, in consultation with external experts, assess the possible relationship between the vaccination and the reported reactions," it added.

The reports concern children aged between 12 to 16 who developed symptoms compatible with narcolepsy, a chronic sleeping disorder, that occurred one to two months after vaccination against the H1N1 pandemic.

The Medical Products Agency said it was in contact with European Union member states for information on any similar reports in other countries.

Finland is also looking into the possible link between narcolepsy and the swine flu vaccination, in particular Pandemrix, following an increase in the sleeping disorder among children this spring, Finish news agency STT said. The preliminary results from the investigation are expected by the end of this year.

In the European Union, around 30 million people were vaccinated using Pandemrix. Sweden bought 18 million doses, which was enough to provide two injections for each person in its 9.3 million population.

According to Finland's National Health Institute, 2.5 million Finns were vaccinated against swine flu. Some 750 showed side effects, namely fevers, headaches and coughing and one case was linked to narcolepsy.

So happy I insisted none of my family member took that killer flu medicine. Look at the money spent on the medicine, just wasted.

exactly seeing as the flu vaccine is 0% effective if it works for you you did not need it and if it does not work for you you actually do need it, but it did not work remember!

all the flu shot is good for is: 1 money in big pharmacy's pockets and 2 Russian roulette for the recipients !

I would not touch flu vaccine with a barge pole it is an unnecessary evil.

This is what happens when you do what the state wants you to do.

Like the fluoridation campaigns in the Swedish schools.

Hmmm....... common sense seems to be rarer still!!!

Did not work......that means that the pandemic actually happened......and millions died......or did they......and if not.......then doesn't it mean it worked??

2.5 million vaccinations........01 case linked to narcolepsy..........now why is this a problem?

Not surprised...our neighbours child was diagnosed with swine flu last year and 2 ofour 3 kids had symptoms but got ober them fast. NONE of us got the vaccine- we're all alive :-) Another world wide panic attack....
12:28 August 19, 2010 by Rebel
Funny, my wife got the shot and was sick for a day. My children got the flu and were....sick for a day and recovered really fast. I was exposed to the kids and never came down with the flu (well, one day I was a bit tired when I went out running).

Just love it when I get to observe mass hysteria. Reminds me of the whole Satanic ritual abuse thing of the 1980s.

Why am i not surprised? History repeats itself huh! Good thing i didn't get stuck with one of those swine flu vaccines.

As epidemiologists made clear at the time, H1N1 wasn't then the illness of mass destruction of the 1918-19 variety (which is due for an iminent comeback by the way), but had the potential to mutate into something similar.

There was much debate amongst epidemiologists whether to take a chance and do nothing, or to react aggressively, but risk public ridicule if the feared mutation did not occur. They were well aware that in the happy event of H1N1 passing through us harmlessly, they would be ridiculed in the manner the posters above have done.

The 1918-19 pandemic killed between 50 and 100 million people, making it the most lethal natural disaster ever. As we all now know, it didn't mutate (hindsight is a wonderful thing). Cassandra is always a bore, but epidemiologists know we are overdue for another bout of very lethal influensa (H1N1 wasn't it) and I have no problems with health authorities taking even a "potential" pandemic very seriously.

If H1N1 had mutated into something sinister, I am sure the same posters above would be complaining that not enough was done to prevent it, especially as the odds are it would have taken at least one of their family, as in 1918/19.

@RobinHood,

I like your comment. Seems that a lot of people have something to say from the sidelines without really being informed how the immune system works or what vaccination implies.

so? dead is part of life. No need to create panic.
13:00 August 20, 2010 by cogito
The World Health Organization (WHO) advisors who first declared H1N1 a pandemic and recommended the vaccine had financial ties to the pharmaceutical companies that produced it.

No surprises there: for the United Nations, corruption is business as usual.
