Assange claims of dirty tricks 'absurd' - Pentagon

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has speculated that the Pentagon could be behind a rape accusation that prompted Swedish prosecutors to issue a warrant for his arrest which was later withdrawn, comments rejected by the US military as 'absurd'.

The country's prosecution service meanwhile justified the chaotic situation when authorities first issued an arrest warrant for the Australian whistleblower late on Friday night but then withdrew it the following day.

The Aftonbladet newspaper quoted Assange, 39, as saying he did not know who was "hiding behind" the claims, which came amid a stand-off with Washington over the website's publication of secret Afghan war documents.

"But we have been warned that for instance the Pentagon will use dirty
tricks to destroy us. I have furthermore been warned about set-up sex traps,"
he said, in a translation of comments published in Swedish.

The former computer hacker described the allegations as "shocking" and said
he had "never, neither in Sweden nor in any other country, had sex with
someone in a way which wasn't completely voluntary on both sides."

Assange told Aftonbladet -- for which he last week agreed to write a
regular column -- that despite the lifting of the warrant, his enemies would still use the claims to damage WikiLeaks.

He refused to give more details about the two women whose claims sparked the furore, saying that it would impinge on their privacy.

The website is set to publish 15,000 more secret papers about the war in
Afghanistan in coming weeks, having recently released nearly 77,000 papers and
sparking charges that it had endangered the lives of informants and others.

"I know from experience that WikiLeaks' enemies continue to trumpet things even after they have been denied," Assange said.

Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said any allegation of dirty tricks
was "absurd".

Prosecutors said Saturday that Assange was now "not suspected of rape" and was no longer wanted for questioning on the charge, but added that an investigation into a separate molestation charge remained open.

Assange, WikiLeaks website, and his aides have strongly denied all the claims.

He had been in Stockholm earlier this month giving a press conference on
the upcoming release of the last batch of Afghanistan documents, but he
generally remains on the move around the world staying with supporters.

He told Aftonbladet he was currently at a friend's summerhouse in northern Sweden.

As the furore over the arrest warrant grew, the Swedish prosecutor's office issued a statement on Sunday defending its actions.

It said that chief prosecutor Eva Finne, who was responsible for withdrawing the arrest warrant, had "more information available to decide on Saturday than the duty prosecutor on Friday evening".

"A decision regarding restrictive measures, such as this, must always be reevaluated in a preliminary inquiry," the statement added.

Prosecutor's office spokeswoman Karin Rosander told AFP late Saturday that the procedure followed was normal and would have been launched automatically by the duty prosecutor in serious cases such as rape.

Separately the duty prosecutor, Maria Haljebo Kjellstrand, said that she "did not regret her decision".

The two women who originally made the allegations did not make an official complaint and it was the police who took the decision to inform the prosecutor's office, she told Expressen newspaper, which broke the story of the charges.

"I received a report from the police which seemed to me to be sufficient to arrest him. On Friday evening I got a call from the police describing what the women said. The information I received was convincing enough for me to take my decision," Hljebo Kjellstrand was quoted as saying.

WikiLeaks and the Pentagon are locked in a bitter dispute over the Afghan papers, with US Defense Secretary Robert Gates calling the website "guilty" on moral grounds and Assange saying that the site would not be threatened.

The Pentagon has said it would not negotiate a "sanitised" release of the documents, as WikiLeaks had suggested it might in order that US officials could help analyse the documents and avoid publishing the names of people whose lives could be threatened.

AFP - STOP PRESS

Pentagon officials announced today that they will make available to Sweden special accommodation facilities for the 127 004 people charged with rape since Friday. Hyram G Haddock Jr, of the Pentagon press office said "The Guantanamo Bay area, or GITMO as we like to call it, is a suburb facility to hold these rapists, until they are tried and convicted in 2027. We are very pleased the Swedish prosecutors have accepted our offer."

Swedish Prosecutor's office spokeswoman Karin Rosander told AFP, "Transfering rape suspects to Guantanamo Bay is part of our normal procedures, don't worry everybody."

The agreement followed prosecutors in Sweden this morning issuing arrest warrants for rape against Osama Bin Laden, Hugo Chavez, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Fidel Castro and 127 000 employees of BP.

@kevin, I really really realllly tried to laugh at what you wrote, but just couldnt.

Back on topic, what did anyone expect the Pentagon to say?

Yes, we made a boo boo, our hands were caught in the cookie jar... next time we'll be more careful..

Not that I'm a 100% sure that it IS the Pentagon behind this, its just not possible to be with the limited info we have been given.

I just think the idea that the Pentagon or CIA would gin up a rape allegation is silly. They'd kidnap him fly him to Egypt or Syria find out about all of his scorces, then stick him in a hole forever. They're not that clever, but they are that mean.

Julian Assange has gone right down in my estimation by trying to ham up his inability to understand that a woman's 'No' means 'No' into something out of a spy thriller where he's the victim.

I actually saw Assange at Riche last Wednesday before this story broke. He was on his own, and from a guy's perspective he definitely looked like he was on the pull. We lost sight of him after he disappeared into the second of Riche's two bars, the one popular with students and 20 somethings.

Lets face it the guy's lonely. He lives a nomadic lifestyle, and was probably foolish enough to believe the myths about Swedish women. He thought his stay here was going to be one long party. That's all this is about. A lonely guy trying to score and not knowing where the boundaries are. It's nothing to do with the Pentagon, that's just Assange trying to cover up his side with something more respectable. It's laughable. The guy's shallow, dishonest and pathetic.
