Stockholm investigates Midnight Run death

Stockholm county council has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a runner at this year's Midnight Run (Midnattsloppet) after being turned away from a Stockholm hospital because it was full.

"We are conducting an investigation with regards to the transport and communication with the hospital. We don't yet know if anything has happened but will have a look at it," said Anders Fridell at Stockholm county council to The Local on Tuesday.

Fridell told The Local that the county council was responding to reports in the Swedish media on Tuesday that the 26-year-old man was turned away from Stockholm South General Hospital after arriving in an ambulance.

According to a report in the Aftonbladet daily on Tuesday the man, one of two runners to have died in the 10 kilometre race, was referred onwards to Karolinska Hospital, where he was declared dead.

"We are not going to investigate why the man died, that is a medical issue. We will look at the transport and communication to see if anything has gone amiss," Fridell said, adding that the inquiry is expected to be completed within a couple of days.

The annual event is a popular festive occasion and traverses a circuit around Södermalm in central Stockholm. 20,000 runners took part in the race this year which was run in 26 degree Celsius with high humidity.

is the middle of the night a busy time for hospitals?
10:16 August 25, 2010 by Puffin
@ wabasha

According to the Swedish press that night was a very busy time for heart attacks as SOS was already treating 3 heart attacks in the A&E department at the time the ambulance arrived which meant that all of the A&E cardiac beds were full and the cardiac doctors were already busy.

The main issue appears to be communication between ambulance/hospital/ the 112 alarm centre

lol oh so this is the "free" healthcare everyone is all happy to throw at people? but it doesnt matter if beds are full in a certain section. take him to a different bed..... he is obviously dieing by the way!

PUFFIN.......a hospital in the biggest city of the entire country can't handle more than 3 patients at a time with heart attacks? 65% of the country is like 55+, what are they going to do in a few years when thousands of these older Swedes start dropping? Just always seems to be excuses here

I agree, it's just excuses.

"We are not going to investigate why the man died, that is a medical issue."...yes it's a medical issue but it should still be looked at to see if the man could have been saved if he was taken at Södersjukhus and I bet you'll find he could have been.

"We will look at the transport and communication to see if anything has gone amiss"...HELLO? Something obviously has gone amiss. And if a big hospital in the capital city has problems dealing with three cardiac patients in Akuten then there is much much more amiss than a communication problem. This poor guy who died will probably be treated as nothing more than a statistic of the healthcare's communication problems.

I've had so many problems with the free healthcare system here I get so frustrated when I hear of stupid mistakes like this. Everywhere in the system (even akuten!) it'a "take a number" or "make an appointment" where the appointed time is normally at least a week later unless you go to Närakuten but they don't help much there anyway.

I use the private system whenever I can now. You pay a little extra but you can get appointments fairly quickly, you get treated with respect and you're not rushed. There's no "take a number" and you can call during business hours (unlike the ridiculous "telephone times" public doctors have because they don't see the need for secretaries).
