Elin Nordegren has broken her nine-month silence over the sex scandal that ended her marriage with golf star Tiger Woods, saying the extent of his philandering had made her feel "stupid" and she had been through "hell."

Nordegren told People magazine in a cover story that stress from the lurid tabloid scandal caused her insomnia and weight loss and that in the days before her divorce was finalised, she began to lose her hair.

"I've been through hell," Nordegren, a 30-year-old Swedish former model, told the magazine in an article posted on Wednesday on its website. The issue hits newsstands on Friday.

Woods wed Nordegren in October 2004 in Barbados. They have a three-year-old daughter, Sam, and a 19-month-old son, Charlie. The divorce was finalised in a 10-minute court hearing on Monday in Florida.

Nordegren told People she initially felt "shock and disbelief" at learning Woods had cheated on her. Later, as a string of women, including a porn star, a cocktail waitress and a Las Vegas club manager claimed affairs with her
husband, she began to question herself.

"I felt stupid as more things were revealed. How could I not have known anything?" she said. "The word betrayal isn't strong enough. I felt like my whole world had fallen apart."

A reporter for the magazine interviewed Nordegren for 19 hours over four days, scoring her first published reaction to the sordid sex scandal that broke last November and made headlines around the world.

Nordegren said she and Woods had tried to reconcile, but she ultimately decided it was hopeless because she had lost her trust in him. She said she had been truly devoted to Woods and had hoped for a happily-ever-after life together with him.

"I loved him," she said. "We had so much fun and I felt safe with him."

Woods's spectacular fall from grace began on November 27th, when he crashed his SUV into a fire hydrant and a tree near his Orlando home.

The incident touched off shocking revelations about a string of extramarital affairs, which led to his admission of adultery and subsequent decision to put his golf career on hold while he tried to rescue his marriage.

The sex scandal became fodder for tabloid newspapers and late-night television comedians amid speculation that Woods crashed his car after being
walloped by a golf club-wielding Nordegren after she learned about his affairs.

Nordegren told People some of the jokes were "pretty hysterical," but insisted there was never any violence in their relationship and she had simply
been trying to get Woods out of the locked car.

"The speculation that I would have used a golf club to hit him is truly ridiculous," she said.

Woods was treated for sex addiction at a clinic in Mississippi in a bid to save his marriage before making his highly anticipated comeback at the US Masters in March.

He was due to tee off again on Thursday for his first tournament as a single man at the Barclays, hoping to reverse a downward spiral since the
start of his marital woes that has left his golf game in ruins.

On a personal level, Nordegren said she is close to completing her bachelor's degree in psychology and that despite her husband's betrayal, "I also feel stronger than I ever have. I have confidence in my beliefs, my decisions and myself."

Woods, 34, and Nordegren issued a joint statement Monday acknowledging that they had ended their marriage, wishing each other the best and promising to work together for their children's happiness.

Asked about future prospects for romance, Nordegren said: "It's going to be just me and the kids for a little while, but I believe in love because I've seen it. I've been there."

She told People that her interview with the magazine would be her first and last and that she now intends to remain a private person.

"My immediate plan is for the kids and me to continue to adjust to our new
situation. I am going to keep taking classes, but my main focus is to try to give myself time to heal," she said.

Nordegren divulged another major life change, confessing that since her breakup with Woods, she had not watched a single minute of golf.

I wish Elin could read this comment of mine. Elin, for me you are the strongest female. Welcome back home. I have a lot of respect for people like you who are self confident and make good decisions. You are very young, beautiful, honest, intelligent girl. You deserve a better life than the earlier one. I pray that the right PRINCE comes to you soon. I feel sorry for your ex, he made a huge mistake- he is a loser. You have nothing to regret about. I am sure you have a very bright future. May all your days ahead be blessed.May God protect you and your little angels from any evil.Remember: EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON!

Erm...sorry but as much as I feel sorry for her, why does their process and details of divorce need to be published in a gossip magazine. I would like to see how much she got paid for this..

No way should she have got $750 million for the amount of time she was married to Tiger Woods. she was only an au-pair when she met him. She didn't give up a promising career to look after him and the kids. perhaps if she had been a better wife he wouldn't have gone a stray.

Elin, good for you. She certainly deserve the money that she got from the divorce. She handled this with style and as good as she could have. All divorces are nasty no matter what.

A less understanding wife would have pulled out the "cigar cutter" or the "nutcracker" while he was sleeping.

"I have been through the stages of disbelief and shock, to anger and ultimately grief over the loss of the family I so badly wanted for my children,"

There is that public face that she and every other Swede wishes to project. "The perfect wife," my butt.

Mb65..........is of the opinion that Elin should not have received $750 million on her divorce from Tiger Woods. Also that "if she had been a better wife he wouldn't have gone a stray".

I suspect that most of us have no idea what kind of a wife Elin was but despite extreme journalistic examination there has been no suggestion that she was a bad wife/mother or betrayed her marriage vows. We do know of an ever increasing tally of betrayals by Tiger Woods. It is true that that it takes two to make a marriage but it is also true that people do what works for them and what they can get away with. Sports stars on the whole are not great marriage investments according to research that I have seen. They are focused on self and their sport. Wife abuse is more frequent, than is in the general public. I believe that there is a culture within some sports of using women and in all fairness one must admit, some women are only too happy to make themselves available to sport stars.

Most people enter marriage with high hopes of......happy ever after, so it is sad when the dream is lost. It is also sad for the young children in the middle of all this.

I don't think that Elin's pre marriage career has anything to do with anything. She may have been an au pair but presumably she would have pursued some career following on from that. Instead she entered Tiger Wood's life as a partner, lived with him for eight years and had two children. I think she is entitled to a proportion of his wealth and no doubt some of her settlement is for the future care of their children. Tiger Woods is not left penniless and he does have a career in place for him to pick up. I for one wish her well, I also hope that Tiger Woods gets his life in gear, decides what he wants in life and resumes a fabulous career.

Best of luck to you, Elin.

@Mb 65 - she didn't get $750 mill. Tiger doesn't even have hat much money. Be logical.

Yes Elin the press and company really helped ya your sweet n innocent character, well!..you and co know how to fool the millions and they really do fall for it but not all. You really gotta thank the press for helping ya!
22:06 August 25, 2010 by humanrights
Stupr: She was not paid for the People article, neither was she awarded $750M as a settlement. I admire this woman for being strong enough, and having enough pride to walk away.
23:03 August 25, 2010 by dizzymoe33
My father was a womanizer until the day he died. He told me it had nothing to do with what my mother did or didn't do it was him. So this it takes two I don't always believe it is true to make or break a marriage.
01:57 August 26, 2010 by vi-lontano
When will we stop blaming women for the bad behavior of men!

It is not Elin's fault that her husband would not respect his marriage vows.

This is Old thinking...used to excuse a man's betrayal of his family.

Maybe Elin isn't the Best person in the world..but as far as her marriage goes she clearly was in it 100%...what could she do if Tiger was only in 50%...

She deserves Everything she has gotten in the divorce...which mostly represents child support and is usually based on a formula (in the US usually a % of the bread earners income, husband or wife, based on number of kids). and if the golfer coughed up a bit more...well he made most of his money on endorsements and Elin and the kids were part of the package he was paid for...so She earned it!

Good luck to you Elin I'm sure things can only get better from here : )

"It's going to be just me and the kids for a little while, but I believe in love because I've seen it. I've been there."

Good for you Elin! I wish you and your kids all the best!

humanrights - I did not comment on her settlement, and also do not think she will actually get $750m. My comment simply quesitons why she felt the need to have this informaiton published in a gossip magazine. I would seriously doubt she did not receive something for it. If she wanted to make a statement within the press she could have done so, however she decided to use a magazine.

Don't take this comment to mean anythign against her being entitled to a good settlement as I think she should get as much as she can. He was completely in the wrong.

I find it quite scary that she is studying psychology yet had NO clue that her husband cheated on her over a four-year period with around 30 women. Hopefully, she won't end up as a practicing psychologist in Sweden or anywhere else for that matter!
