Sweden’s highest court has refused to hear a last-ditch plea by the Madonna of the Orgasm church to be recognized.

The church, in Lövestad in southern Sweden, has been fighting a lengthy battle to be registered as a faith community in Sweden, but Sweden’s Supreme Administrative Court (Regeringsrätten) said there were no grounds to appeal a Court of Appeal decision to reject the application.

The church’s Spanish founder and self-appointed cardinal, Carlos Bebeacua, has said that he believes that the orgasm is God and should be worshipped.

Beceacua once told tabloid Kvällsposten:

“The orgasm is the ultimate feeling of lust, it shouldn’t be limited to ejaculation. You can reach it through art or by looking at a landscape and thinking ‘Wow!’”

The Madonna of Orgasm Church is centered on a similarly named painting by Bebeacua which sparked protests during the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, Spain.

In November 2008, the Stockholm County Administrative Court overruled Sweden’s Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet), which had refused Bebeacua’s application to register his church as a religion.

The agency said the church’s name would offend Christians, but the ‘cardinal’ had argued successfully that local Christians in Lövestad, including the Church of Sweden parish priest, had welcomed the unconventional religion. He also pointed out that the word ‘Madonna’ literally translates as ‘my lady’ and does not necessarily refer to the Virgin Mary.

Bebeacua’s success was short-lived, however. The Administrative Court of Appeal ruled that ‘Madonna’ was generally understood as a reference to the Virgin Mary and that the name would “cause offence not only in the broad groups of the population that have Christian roots, but also in society as a whole.”

The Supreme Court said it would not hear the case as there were no serious errors in the appeal court’s judgement and the case did not involve an important precedent.

Is scientology considered a religeon in Sweden?
20:00 August 25, 2010 by silly t
madness has engulfed the world...
21:14 August 25, 2010 by A SAFARI
@silly t you are damn right!People just do whatever pleases them in the name of Christianity...we actually live in perilous times.
22:09 August 25, 2010 by DAVID T
well at least they don't stone people to death or behead them - that's another religion that SHOULD be banned.
22:18 August 25, 2010 by mojofat
"The agency said the church's name would offend Christians,"

Hmm...well as an atheist the names of all churches offend me. See how it's all a matter of perspective? But I guess as in America, christians are truly in a special class with special rights.
00:11 August 26, 2010 by mollis
It's all come to a sticky end then.
01:13 August 26, 2010 by BigBilly
@ mojofat I do not understand why you are offended by the names of all churches. You should have respect for other people's way of thinking even if you disagree completely with them. Being offended is really pointless, these religious things aren't going to go away so you will spend a lifetime being upset. Poor old you.
01:42 August 26, 2010 by Da Goat
@ mojofat You are actually being silly really as the proposed church in question from my reading is in fact an atheist church and I guess you may just enjoy the experience!

Christians will not be offended in any way (they are not even offended by misotheists) Catholics on the other hand might be !

Christians do not hold Mary to be anything really special, Catholics do though!

this sounds like a hedonistic church which is not so unusual these days!

The metaphors on the story title are incredible!
02:53 August 26, 2010 by vi-lontano
@Da Goat

I was raised both Protestant and Catholic and EVEN though Mary is not "worshiped" by Protestants she is still revered as the mother of JC....I know Many Many protestants and non-denominational Christians who would be offended by JC's mom being the new orgiastic goddess...

also Muslims honor Mary as the mother of the"prophet" JC...maybe they might be offended as well...

FYI: Catholics are Christian too..the originals actually : )

protestants are the "knockoffs"...

It is no sillier than any other religion - and with as much evidence.

So how can the state decide on a threshold level of silliness - the state should have no role or interaction with religious bodies - except to prosecute them for child abuse.

Abolish all tax breaks and benefits that the religious demand at the expense of everyone else..
10:37 August 26, 2010 by mojofat
@DaGoat - My point was that ruling on whether a religion is "valid" or not based on whether it offends christians is silly...not that I actually am offended.

@engagebrain has it right.

So it is ok to turn this down because it offends Christians but turn blind on offences committed against Muslims by people like Vilks. Sweden be fair. Ban all offending.
12:03 August 26, 2010 by flintis
Nothing wrong with a good orgasm, but why does Madonna have to be involved, I'd much rather have an orgasm with Catherine Deneuve.

@trustworhty, Yes Sweden be fair, prosecute all offenders of the faith & deport them

How much stranger is it than the VIRGIN birth,or the ressurection or the assencion into heaven or.. or... or...,at least with this type of FANTASY in the END YOU DO ACTUALLY GET SOMETHING OUT OF IT!
22:00 August 26, 2010 by notnamed
@da goat - it isn't an atheist church - the founder believes in god and worships god for the gift of orgasms. Atheists don't have churches - that's part of what makes them atheists.
22:58 August 26, 2010 by TheT-Dot-oh!
Funny how this guy just wants to be validated yet the focus is all on cristians and catholics and how they might be offended. More importantly yet overlooked is why don't we question the ability of the courts to decide if and why a particular group or even "Society as a whole" would or wouldn't be offended by something real or imagined. That grand assumption by the court offends my intellect.

Who cares who's offended anyway? get over it! I am.

GO LOVESTAD! YOU ROCK!
09:29 August 27, 2010 by flintis
@notnamed:- If the religious were to follow the scriptures there would be no religious buildings, according to the old testament "God" said, do not worship false gods & Do NOT build TEMPLES in my name.

The church obviously does not heed the word of their leader, bl??dy hypocrites.
09:46 August 27, 2010 by crunchy2k
Imagine if an American indigenous tribe subscribed for church status with caveat of using peyote cactus. Happen here as it is an adults choice how to serve the god, gods, entities outside the roman classic thought. Tax status is another matter as the catholic, Lutheranism, and other 15th century churches have a standing on getting the serfs moneys...Time to review the statues of why have them...and remove the tax breaks...people have a way of meeting in their homes...and local areas according to code.

I only see and many do, a religion being wrong when it is a cult...one minor religion and a major news gather is a cult...the question become how do we handle that as cults distill the believers into armies against normal cultural views.
13:06 August 27, 2010 by americanska
Since the goverment funds all churches in sweden - this is good that they didn't approve this BS cult.

To all your moaners on here saying Christian's are geting special treatment. Get over it - think off all the media now adays that completely tries to undermine all christian religions.

Meanwhile - you can't air an episode of south park because it might offend muslims.

When my wife was in labor, she came to worship epideural anesthesia. If the orgasm is what you are really after there are a few dozen devices and substances that belong on your altar.
14:34 August 27, 2010 by MarshaLynn
his is precisely the sort of pagan religion that existed in ancient Greece and Rome. Sexuality was its focus. They had "temple prostitutes" (literally). There is nothing new under the sun. A little common sense would go a long way.
15:19 August 27, 2010 by bcterry
As strange as it is, it is every bit as viable as any of the current mythologies.

A good orgasm, beats the hell out of a deadly jihad any time.

If we are talking about offending others, i can think of nothing more offensive, and repulsive than islam.

There is no viable reason that they should be denied.
18:03 August 27, 2010 by bobbychyldd
As very religious as I am, and worried that God and the worship of Him comes to a point of having no respect or sanctity. As much as I think this propsed "church" is not necessary in life, can anyone tell me under legal laws, why it can't be a church? Does the offense of other religions really play a legal role? I can understand it playing some role in common sense and in the name of building a community together, but I'm ignorant to the laws of Sweden that govern these things.

I would say, that if Madonna is supposed to be used generically, he should probably take it to Spain and register the church. If he wants it in Sweden, maybe he needs to rename it to the swedish form...

If we really want to bring common sense into this, no manmade religion has any viability.

True spirituality can only be found from within, not from any exclusive, dictatorial, manmade dogma written by mere ignorant mortals, just like you and me, who have no idea whether or not there is a higher intellect responsible for our existence.

The historical carnage committed in the name of these religions, that continues to this day, should be more than enough evidence that they are simply blowing smoke out of their asses.

Fantastic! No longer need we keep the stupidity confined to politicians and talk-show hosts, let's just get in the churches, too. I mean stupidity shouldn't be limited to just DOING something stupid, this fellow takes it to a new low (high?) of saying and possibly...thinking. You can look around and see that this kind of idiocy is rare and special and should be protected.
