Bad doctors to be named in online register

The Swedish Board of Health and Welfare has written to the government to request permission to publish online the names, qualifications and current professional status of all certified workers in the healthcare sector.

"This is already public information. Anybody can look it up, but we're making it more easily accessible," said Anders Printz, head of the board's regulatory division.

The list will not include any information about accusations of malpractice or official warnings from the Medical Responsibility Board. It will however contain names, certifications, and details on whether a medical professional has incurred any restrictions or been struck off the register.

"These are the most flagrant actions performed by the state. Everybody must of course have access to information that a particular person is not permitted to work -- as a doctor for instance -- if that is what they are doing," said Printz.

With patients likely to welcome the move, healthcare employers will also benefit from having readier access to the register. And in a bid to make the system more watertight, the board is urging Sweden and the other Nordic countries to coordinate their registers so employers can see if an applicant has been subject to restrictions in any of the other countries.

A pan-Nordic register could, for example, have helped curtail the career of Danish doctor Johanne Krogh. The surgeon had her medical licence revoked in her native Denmark before moving to Norway, where she was implicated in 29 malpractice cases.

The surgeon, referred to by the Oslo media as the "worst doctor in Norway," later moved to Sweden and has now been suspended from her job at Hudiksvall hospital pending the results of an investigation by the Swedish health board.

Its about time that bad doctors are publicized. My sister-in-law who had corporal tunnel syndrome and had surgery on her hand was butchered. She has a giant bubble of skin taken from her thigh on her wrist. This bubble has been on her arm now for ten years. She is disfigured and in pain. Why? Bad doctor. Oh and by the way why hasn't she been fixed? Good question. Oh she also is not given sick pay because she has been in pain too long in someones crazy mind. Why? No idea. Something is wrong with this picture and no one in government seem to give a damn.

They will publish the names of bad doctors but not child sex offenders, rapists, murderers, etc.

@ countrysidedrive:

I think you mean Carpal tunnel syndrome.
15:04 August 28, 2010 by Kaethar
Burritos: Why should their names be published? They are then put at a risk for social alienation after they have done their time. They also risk violence (even death) from those who feel the need to take the law into their own hands. The names of convicts are in short kept secret for their own safety. You can argue that convicts don't deserve safety all you want but that says more about you then it does about them.

I'd suggest watching the British film Boy A. An amazing film which really shows the need for secrecy when it comes to ex-prisoners.

@Kaethar

Are you serious????

Are you talking about social integration of rapists, murderers and CHILD OFFENDERS????

First of all, do you know what pathologies are? Are you so naif to believe that a child offender can be "recovered". There is not such thing as an integration for these kind of crimes. Yes, let's integrate the child rappist and maybe give him a job as a gym school teacher.. wohooo.

And if we are talking about ethics here, it is not the same to reincert into society someone that robbed, that smuggled drugs, or other crimes that can be related to marginalization... but these?

Are you a parent? have you been rapped ever? has one of your close ones been killed? I am not so sure about you having the same opinion if so.

@glamelixir: The police make sure those arrested for child molestation don't work with children if that's your worry. Again, watch Boy A about a boy who was convicted of murder. Not everyone deserves a second chance morally speaking but there are definitely convicts who do who've been convicted of those crimes and whose lives would be destroyed if they were publically named. They deserve the right to a normal life too once they've paid for their crimes. :/

@Kaethar.. Please... "The police makes sure those arrested for child molestation don\t work with children" ?????????

How can you even give this as an argument.... they CAN LEAVE THE COUNTRY, is the swedish police going to follow them? The Swedish police can't handle a teenage riot in Rosengard, how do you think they can stop a pedophile???

Your answers are just ridiculous.

NO THEY DON'T, as the persons whose life they've ruinned lost that chance thanks to them. The difference is that THEY had the chance to think twice before destroying theirs.

There are crimes and crimes, I can't believe you are still protecting killers, rappers and pedophiles, unless you have something to hide yourself...

I didn't know rappers went to prison. Although, that kind of music should be against the law!!!

Rapers, or rapists, are a completely different thing, and they should be kept inside for the rest of their lifes and forced to listen to rappers!

"The ice dripped in the winter sun. It was the first day when the light had been intense enough to cause dripping in the sunlight. To hear it was an extraordinary wakeup call.
