Mushroom pickers find kittens buried alive

Published: 28 Aug 10 12:07 CET | Print version

A couple out picking mushrooms in the woods in western Sweden made a macabre find on Thursday evening after spotting the head of a live kitten peering out from the ground behind a tree stump.

The pair immediately began digging and quickly found three distressed and exhausted kittens buried in a woodland area near Hindås, 34 kilometres east of Gothenburg, local newspaper Borås Tidning reports.

Shocked by the find, the couple contacted Tina Karlsson, who runs a local shelter for abandoned cats. Karlsson said one of the four week old kittens -- two females and one male -- had somehow managed to clamber out of the shallow grave and get its head above ground.

"If I got hold of whoever did this I don't know what I'd do," she told Borås Tidning.

Karlsson said she would now nurse the kittens back to health before attempting to find a new home for them after they reach the age of twelve weeks.

"My heart bleeds for these little creatures who don't get a chance because of idiots without a heart or a brain," she said.

It's hardly macabre, if they were alive now, is it?? Another example of crappy writing from The Local.

Apparently, Mirriam Webster's agrees with the Local.

1: having death as a subject : comprising or including a personalized representation of death

2: dwelling on the gruesome

3: tending to produce horror in a beholder

I hope they find the monsters behind this and get them for animal cruelty as well as huge fines.

It really is shameful how low humans can sometimes be - without even counting the scumbags in the recording and movie industries.

How can people be so utterly mean and cruel?. To do this to such innocent little creatures as kittens speaks of some very cruel idiots and these people live amongst us. I hope they are found and their names made public, besides been given whatever the law can send their way - which is probably not much in Sweden, I also hope life treats them in kind, like they treated those poor kittens. Thanks to the caring people who found them and the ones that will care for them.

"If I got hold of whoever did this I don't know what I'd do," she told Borås Tidning.

I do, I'd dig a "slightly bigger" and more secure grave.

@julielou40:

If you don't like the local then don't read it. You do have a choice whether or not to read the paper and if you don't care about the article why comment on it?

I would like to find the person/people who did this and dig a hole to China and put them in it and there is no way out. They had better run for their lives if I was around. I just happen to believe that God created all to be equal. I can think of some so called humans with supposely brains on their head who should not be created equal. I have rescued animals here and I have no tolerance for this dirt bag who did this.

I bet the guy is muslim. don't they think kittens are unclean?

@ sherian elizabeth.

I've read some of your posts, and you seem VERY; VERY opiniated.

What does Swedish news matter to you? You don't even live in Sweden!!!!!

This story sounds very fishy to me. It is just too weird and convenient that some mushroom pickers in the middle of a dark forest come across buried kittens. I'm thinking this is all a lie to get people to adopt some unwanted kittens. You know that people will be coming out of the woodwork to claim them because of this story. Great marketing strategy...get the paper to write a heartwrenching story that evokes loads of emotions in the readers. No outlay of cash from the supplier and lots of customers.

Though I used to find this sort of thing to be terrible, I now understand that it happens in most countries of the world all the time. There are even techniques to killing kittens or puppies.

1) Remember that one of the children needs to remain to drink the milk

2) The mother will also notice if all of her children go

3) Dig the hole deep enough or drown the kittens

Its horrible stuff, but this sort of thing happens a lot. In countries not as affluent and blessed as Sweden, no one would think twice about such things...
14:15 August 29, 2010 by xykat
Yes, they could have elaborated on the story, like exactly where the kittens were found, was it near any farms. I think its possible for this kind of thing to happen.but rare. Those kittens were very lucky there were active mushroom pickers out and about. I really don't think animal agencies are that desperate to make up a story like this.

I would love to adopt at least 6 cats but I live with a person who is allergic. Sad!

People have no respect for animals. I believe that animals should be on the same level as humans really. They are fellow creatures that occupy this earth and should be respected. The blessings of life whether it is in 3 small kitty's or a human being should be appreciated.

@David T

I love cats...they taste like chicken.
02:01 August 30, 2010 by travels
@DAVID T and Swedesmith

Nothing new, but It's always sad to know that there are people like you around, besides the kind that buried the kittens... kind of like you. I don't know what is your problem with cats, but I've had cats (and dogs) all my life and they are nice, sweet, inocent beings. To say that you hate them is a strong feeling, like I could say.. I hate you - guess we all have our reasons, or that they taste good, probably you would too, maybe someone will get a chance to taste you - hopefully.

Good story makes one think!

I believe if you need to get rid of unwanted animals and you can't re-home/recycle them you should at least do it kindly/humanely, burying live kittens is just sick.

you could at least grow them out a bit and let David T eat them as I don't think they are good for growing mushrooms on (mushrooms like cellulose)
07:29 August 30, 2010 by SarahRF
Besides highlighting how cruel some people can be, I believe this article highlights another sad factor: that Sweden has very very few places that people can take unwanted pets, and so they are left out in the woods or buried alive.

The issue is not really the cruelty of people, but the lack of safe places that unwanted animals can be taken to, where they stand the chance of being adopted by people who will care for them and love them properly.

I bet you are a moron and that you don't have any religion whatsoever. I bet your mama hated you and therefore you hate everyone

@travels

i lived for some time near a farm and i find sheeps and cattles very sweet, nice, highly intelligent and innocent beings. if your heart bleeds for cats and dogs but have no problem enjoying a steak, then you are just as "gruesome" as Swedensmith and DAVD T. Life is life. The life of a cat is not more important than any other domesticated animal.
12:50 August 30, 2010 by travels
@LeoKinmann

I'm vegetarian and as far as domesticated animals are concerned a cow is not exactly the same as a pet, like a cat or a dog. I don't eat either. Still, probably most who eat meat would not say that they hate cows (or sheep, etc) or bury them alive. Those who have cats and live near Swedensmith or DAVID T (nice kind of neighbors to have around) better be careful for their cats' safety.
00:40 August 31, 2010 by waffen
Someone saying that they hate any animal brings both their sanity and what was wrong with their developing childhood into question.

Hitler did not believe in hunting, fishing or trapping, "blood sports" he called them, and he was very affectionate with animals.

What does that say about the character of those who "hate cats" or otherwise make derogaory remarks about animal cruelty?

Humans are just another one of the animals on this planet. l All of the animals and creatures on this earth are equal.

The problem is that some humans do not believe this fact, and to see the results of that superior attitude one need only to look around the world to the plethora of troubles, beginning with the mindless wars.

I had a friend who found kittens in a plastic bag in the forest behind some apartments once. Odd, so many said she should have just LEFT them. I had a family I lived with in France drown kittens in a pond in a suitcase. Perhaps preventing unwanted breeding is the healthiest way to deal with this!
23:01 August 31, 2010 by LeoKinmann
waffen mentioned an interesting point, Hitler was a vegetarian too!
