Julian Assange applies for Swedish residency

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has applied for a permit to work and reside in the country, a spokesperson for the Swedish Migration Board confirmed on Tuesday.

"He has applied for permission to work and stay in Sweden and (the request) came in on August 18," Haakan Gestrin told AFP.

He added it was not possible to give more details about the 39-year-old Australian's application because it had not yet been processed.

Another migration board spokesperson, Gunilla Wikström, told Swedish news
agency TT that the application was on hold since some information was missing, but did not provide further details.

Assange's application was submitted shortly before rape and molestation allegations against him by two Swedish women were made public.

A Swedish duty prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for him on August 20th over a rape claim, which was later abruptly withdrawn by chief prosecutor Eva Finné the next day, saying new information had come to light.

Then last week, Finné said there was no reason to believe a crime had been committed, adding however that she had enough evidence to keep looking into a
molestation allegation from the other woman against Assange.

Police questioned Assange about the allegation on Monday, and his lawyer told AFP on Tuesday he expected the prosecutor to "drop the whole thing."

Assange himself has called the allegations part of a "smear campaign" aimed at discrediting his website, which is locked in a row with the Pentagon over the release of secret US documents about the war in Afghanistan.

WikiLeaks published nearly 77,000 classified US military documents on the war in Afghanistan on July 23, and it intends to publish another 15,000 within the next week or so.

He should fit right into Sweden quite nicely.

Wonder why he is dying his hair?

I don't feel good about this lad.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder about the mental well-being of Julian Assange.

First he molests not one but two Swedish women within days of arriving in the country, (for which he bizarrely blames the Pentagon), now he seems to think Sweden is his natural home.

As he's not an asylum seeker with a well founded fear of persecution (breaking the law of a western democracy doesn't count, that's simply breaking the law), and he's not an EU citizen, I think the Swedes should send him packing. The guy's got "Trouble" stamped all over him.

"First he molests not one but two Swedish women "

- That is an interesting statement to make, care to back it up with proof? heck even the police would like some of that proof.

"The guy's got 'Trouble' stamped all over him. "

- Show me one whistleblower that does not.

Kindly go back to watching Al Jazera and CNN or FOX for your news.

Innocent until proven otherwise. If you've read the reports on the statements the 2 women made, it appears very strange and nothing like the hysterical initial media reports.

Thank god for Wikileaks. They are whistleblowers who scare Governments and expose some home truths. While others turn a blind eye and focus on their world, while their own Governments commit illegal acts in the name of freedom!!

Wouldn't he be much happier in Afganistan?

The ones fearful of being sent back are usually the ones who have committed atrocities/crimes & are scared of retribution or serving a prison sentence & most likely to have thrown away their legitimate id documents. I doubt any of them are EU citizens, so should the Swededs send them packing too?

My guess is that he needs to be registered as a Swedish resident in order to get the necessary protection for the WikiLeaks operation in Sweden. Anyone have any ides on that?

It will be interesting to see who has complained and what happened. Then, if they are found to be working for a government agency or simply grandstanding to gain celebrity and Assange is innocent.... perhaps Swedish law will allow Assange to sue for defamation? Just a thought.

I just wonder how important is the necessity of swedish language for such personalities like Assange, in order to prosper while staying and working in Sweden. If he gets successful, means that Swedish language is not meant for smart people.
