American photographer suspected of raping girl

An American photographer with a record of committing sex offences in the US has been arrested on suspicion of raping a 14-year-old girl in Stockholm.

The photographer came into contact with the girl through his own photo and modelling agency.

The 41-year-old Kansas man, who used the nickname "Carter," was imprisoned eight years ago in the US for taking indecent photos of minors. He has also faced charges for attempted sexual exploitation of a child, statutory sodomy and sexual misconduct.

Investigators in the US had also found "many, many" photos of teenage girls taken from pornographic websites on his computer.

Prosecutor Elisabeth Brandt said the girl had met the photographer at a private makeup school in Stockholm, where he had photographed student work.

"Carter also has a private firm through which he seeks and photographs young girls as models," Brandt wrote.

The offence, classified as child rape, took place in early August in the photographer's home in Stockholm, according to the police report.

The victim's parents had met Carter and saw the photographs he took of their daughter. They had considered most of the photographs to be harmless, although had been disturbed by one in which she was in wet clothing.

They were later told by a friend of the girl that she had been forced to have sex with the man. The detention petition said there was a risk the suspect would flee or otherwise evade prosecution or punishment or tamper with evidence.

It is unclear whether the man is still in Sweden. The Local's attempts to reach the prosecution's office were unsuccessful.
