Julian Assange hasn't been convicted of any offence, yet has had his name and picture released to the press and published by every Swedish national paper in the land with regard to molestation allegations.
Compare and contrast that with the murderer of Nancy Tavsan. This man has been tried, found guilty and sentenced of murder, yet the Swedish press refuse to name him, despite it not being against any law to do so.
Expressen refers to him merely as the Skuggan ('The Shadow'), Aftonbladet simply as "the 22 year old man", ditto GP, while I can find no trace of the story what so ever in Svenska Dagbladet or Dagens Nyheter.
Self censorship? A little prod from the government? Conformity at work? Cowardly editors not worthy of the name? Quite possibly, because the 'Shadow' is of course nothing of the sort, he has a name and its Abdulaziz Abdullahi Mohamed Hussein, a Somali immigrant who was once deported from Sweden for not having legal residency papers, only to return, the same day.
I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories but this stinks.
There is no earthly reason not to name and shame convicted murderers, indeed the British newspapers make it their duty to do so regardless. But here in Sweden, the Mohamed Hussein case touches on issues the politicians would rather not talk about, particularly before an election. So voila the murderers name is not published anywhere in Sweden.
Is it any wonder the Danes believe Sweden is only a "developing country" when it comes to freedom of speech and democracy issues. This is really pitiful. When it comes to race issues, Sweden isn't so much "developing" as in the gestation phase. Censorship like this is a massive over reaction, and won't help anyone.
There isn't an issue in the world which is aided by censorship. Sweden really has a lot to learn and their newspapers editors are a joke. Somehow I doubt Watergate would ever have broken in Stockholm. Obedient, obsequious editors, happy to censor themselves at the first prod from the establishment. Pathetic.
Did you also Know the aid agencies ADRA, World vision and Diakonia have been expelled from Somalia last week because they were promoting Christian values! what a joke!!! if they were espousing Islamic values they sure would not be there in Somalia helping the poor! helping the poor is a Christian activity!
If the person who committed the crime is indeed the man you have mentioned, his name might have been publicly announced; I presume that is how you got his name. The reason why a government might not want to dwell on it further is fear of black lash. The fear is that the racist elements of society might politicise it and mobilize right-wing anger or misplaced anger. Despite Assange being a foreigner, his white face, bue eyes and blond hair does not bring out similar response.
The Jews in Germany suffered immense humuliation because of racism. The merit of the character of the individual, good, bad or neutral, had not meaning then. To a limit this is true in Europe and USA.
I don't wish to patronise, but please spare me the seminar on race. I was dealing with race issues in London before (I suspect) you were even born.
I'm fully aware of what the Swedes think they're doing, my point is that they're wrong. The experience of Britain is that having one rule for one race and another for others is, even when well intentioned, entirely counter productive.
And of course the Swedes are having one rule for one race and another for others. If Mohamed Hussein had been Sven Jonsson his name and picture would be all over the newspapers, just as Julian Assange's is (and he hasn't even been charged).
I would ask you to dwell on your comments. You are unitentionally using the language all totalitarian regimes use to justify censorship. "Racist elements might politicise.." Swap your use of "racist" for "reactionary" and you have the Soviet Union's justification for a censored press for 70 years. Swap it for "hostile" and you have North Korea's justification to this day. Those "elements" the establishment don't like will always be there. They can always justify censorship if you're that way inclined. But society is never improved through censorhsip.
Finally, over quick references to the Holocaust are used far too often in debate to close it down. Look through newspaper forums and you'll see the 'Nazis' and the 'Holocaust' bandied about in relation to all manner of subjects by those rushing to seize the moral high ground. All this does is demean what happened to the Jews in the 1940s. The Holocaust stands alone and to bring it into a discussion like this is inappropriate and wrong.
Well said. I notice that the victim's name is printed but not the criminal's. Who is the press trying to protect.?
Precis! It's the leftist media protecting the formerly leftist government's propaganda machine.
Dark skinned =Gaussian blurr /anonymity.
I know what Julian Assange looks life, an accused rapist, yet it's politically incorrect to let me know what this CONVICTED piece of Somali refuse looks like.
Censorship for the purpose of being PC, equals Fascism and oppression.
