Swedish military turns to jobless to fill ranks

Job-seekers with a military background could be required to accept a vacancy as a soldier when the Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen - AF) begins recruiting professionals for the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten) in the autumn.

"But we are not going to force people to bear arms," said Bengt Lyngbäck at AF to the Aftonbladet daily.

Since the abolition of compulsory military service on June 1st 2010, the Armed Forces have been tasked with attracting recruits for a professional military.

The Armed Forces have contracted AF, which operates 320 job centres across the country, to aid them in their search for 4,000-6,000 suitable recruits to enter basic training.

Once admitted to the military soldiers will be obliged to bear arms and required to fulfil overseas operations on demand, according to the Armed Forces homepage which details the job requirements.

Under existing regulations jobseekers who refuse to accept an available job run the risk of losing unemployment benefits, but AF told the newspaper that while policy remains unclear on the issue no one will be forced to bear arms.

"We have to be careful enough so that we don't force anyone to bear arms," Bengt Lyngbäck told Aftonbladet adding, "we understand the problem and are going to develop a clear policy to deal with this."

The Local reported in June that the Armed Forces had met criticism of its new recruitment campaign for allegedly painting a false picture of life in the military.

The three advertising films - for the army, navy and air force respectively - feature soldiers battling a forest fire, chasing Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, and pilots scrambling their jets to meet an incoming threat to Sweden's borders.

Fredrik Svahn at the Swedish Armed Forces told The Local in June that the films should not however be seen as a recruitment drive for a military career but should be seen more as a "discussion with the Swedish people".

"National service ends on June 30th and will be major major change with the first voluntary recruits admitted on August 15th. We want to open a discussion and invite opinions on the purpose of the Swedish Armed Forces," he said, while adding that the campaign website can also be used to apply for a job.

The centre-right Alliance government decided on June 19th 2009 to end 99 years of mandatory military service, which on average had lasted about 11 months, and move toward a professional military.

With hard times finding a job, especially a job you really want, the military could take advantage of such a situation. Pump out more enlightened recruitment adds. Might snag a following. But more realistic that Swedish soldiers will be intervening in places like Afghanistan and not just atypical UN type missions.

Conscription was ended and replaced by an economic draft. If your unemployment insurance comes to an end, I guess any job is acceptable if you are hungry enough, including taking part in the illegal, immoral and totally unnecessary invasion and occupation of Afghanistan.

@Kevtravels....

do your homework about the swedish military in Afghan and you'll see the swedsih military is not intervening.

@Internuncio....

what a great moment to stick a load of bull newspaper adds and stories written by a bunch of tree huggers. Just as well for you, your living in a warm and safe bed in SWEDEN. If terror was closer to your door would you welcome the protection of some soldiers, of course you would. Don't read everything you read in the papers.

If some take up the military as a means of getting a job, good luck to you and i hope you can make a success out of it.

Thank you 4thtankie for bothering to take the time to comment what I posted.

I know all about bringing terror(-ism) to the doors of other people as I used to do that for a living when I was a United States Marine.

I'm not surprised. From what I've seen of GSU where quite a few unemployed have signed on for that (although I do know some people have taken 3 month of work for it) and the Swedes I've talked too who support military service in Sweden but do not support the idea of forced service abroad, I think the army will have trouble recruiting under current conditions without picking up on those who can't get jobs elsewhere.

So, if the military isnt going to force people to bear arms, what are they going to do, create batallions of orderlies to fight off papercuts? Well, I guess that's what has become of the swedish armed forces, the official coffee pot watcher of Afghanistan.....Sad considering they were once one of the strongest militaries in the world...Just rename the swedish army the "Cassius Clay School of foreign affairs" and be done with it.

Difficulties in recruiting :)

Really? I've had some really funny discussions with Swedes here and it seems that the support for US efforts in A-stan (and elsewhere) is unvawering as ever. One central symptom of this state of being seems to be also unwavering support for ending conscription and getting enthusiasts, or now even professionals by economic exigency to do this hard and most serious work. I sense something dodgy about this sentiment, to put it frankly.

This I name the "Swedish Type of Anti-Americanism":

Consider this:

(1)

During the Vietnam war, the US armed forces dished out heavy heavy punishment to the Vietnamese, while at the same time the US public protested loudly against this. Soft talk, hard hand.

whereas

(2)

In Sweden, the public support for the US efforts in contemporary A-stan remains borderline fanatical, while the Swedish troops do not undertake any offensive missions! Most Swedes just dont know this, or they have some vague ideas of "peacekeeping". What Swedish troops actually do is that they drive around in the area (these convoys, what a masochistic idea), so that the local conservatives get to pound them with RPGs and 12,7 mm NSVs and whatnot from high up on the mountainsides. Time and again.

In this sense, Sweden is America's exact opposite. Dare to be different, say!

By the way, there is a good documentary film by Norwegian journalist Paul Refsdal, who 'embedded' himself with a conservative band, and the video footage shows pretty well the daily routine.

Thank you "Jafo" for your query.

MOS 1141.

By "class" if you mean pay grade / rank, E-2.

Here is what another Marine, Gen. Smedley D. Butler, has to say:

"War is a Racket" --Gen. Smedley D. Butler, U.S.M.C.

I would love to join the Swedish Army, just a matter of waiting for my citizenship time to come up. As a Ex Aussie Soldier who has served in Afghanistan and Iraq multiple times I would love to bring some of that experience to the Swedish Armed Forces.

Only trouble is getting any info out recruiting on conditions of service and the such.

Worked along side some of the SSG boys and they where a great group of Guys doing a tough job. There work providing protection to the Reconstruction teams was first rate.

Not everyone supports the ISAF mission in Afghanistan but it would be nice if they could surport there fellow Sweds.

Hopefully, when recruiting for the Swedish Armed Forces, please

be always on the alert to check and srutinised thoroughly the

candidate to be considered. The reason is that some people can

wait for years for this opportunity to gain entry into the

Swedish Army and for what ?
