Elk makes unexpected visit to Swedish health clinic

An elk cow with swollen udders shattered two windows as it dashed into a health clinic near Borås in western Sweden on Wednesday, startling personnel who then called police and local hunters for help.

The female elk first lumbered along the backside of the Dalsjöfors health clinic before suddenly turning and smashing through two large picture windows before ending up in an inner courtyard, the Borås Tidning (BT) newspaper reported.

“I heard a big crash and went out into the hallway. Then I saw shards of glass on the floor and an elk cow in the courtyard hopping around,” clinic employees Jenny Andersson-Fekete and Evelyn Pihlman told BT.

Staff members in the adjacent pharmacy were also taken aback by the frightened beast as it lumbered around in the courtyard, just in front of an open door into the pharmacy.

“What luck that it didn’t come in here and continue through the building,” said pharmacy employee Solveig Palm.

Eventually the police and licenced hunters were called in to deal with the elk, which by that time had a large gash in its hind leg from its leap through the windows.

The injured animal was put out of its misery by Bosse Persson, a licenced hunter who took a position on the roof of the building in order to get off a clear shot.

In an odd twist of fate, Persson realized he had actually seen the female elk a week earlier after she had lost a calf in a traffic accident in Dalsjöfors.

“It’s the same elk cow. She has swollen udders,” said Persson.

If you had swollen udders, you might be in a bad mood too!
19:37 September 9, 2010 by xykat
Ignorant country people, they could have just given the animal a tranquilizer and treated her injuries and udders. Getting a hinter is pretty horrible and they call themselves a medical clinic? It seems a bit hypocritical.

Who don't the same morals apply to animals?
19:43 September 9, 2010 by Tall swede
The headline says "unexpected" visit. Do elk usually often clinics, but usually calls ahead to tell them that they are on their way?

Right on Xykat they should have just darted the cow and taken her to the be repaired and repatriated not sure if country people is correct it feels more like city thinking and do they really have health clinics in the country (I thought they may have closed them down like everywhere else )

It is a real shame to waste an elk like that unless they cut her up and took her home (decided she was easier to remove in easy to carry shopping size bits)

Dr love I think an antibiotic would spoil the flavour (meat)

I do hope someone does in fact eat her, as quite often in these circumstances they don't treat the animal correctly and just throw the beast away which is even more criminal than what is reported! I guess the hunter did the right thing! Police thinking on the other hand normally wants the evidence until it spoils!

I am sure the hunter will make sure the meat does not go to waste.

@xykat Who is the ignorant one here? If you live in the countryside what source of food is more sustainable and ethical than wild game whose populations are carefully managed? Or should they instead buy grains produced 2000 km away from chemical fertilizers and the like so that they can maintain your "ignorant city person" view of the world? Give me a break.

Maybe the elk just wanted immediate treatment for the swollen udders. They probably shot her because she wouldn't wait for her scheduled October 2011 appointment at the health clinic. If she had known someone with a little influence in the health system who could have gotten her an earlier appointment, maybe this whole tragedy could have been avoided.

I think after the death of her calf she went on a booze and drug rampage to deal with the stress. after noticing Systembologet was closed (as usual) she got even more mad. crashing into the clinic in search of hard drugs! one more reason to privatize Systembologet. I hope the hunter thought ahead and bought a nice wine to go with his elk dinner.

It's a moose. An elk is another animal which doesn't live in Sweden.

In both Europe and North America, it's good meat.

You need to start growing meat in petri dishes and stop slaying animals in such a wanton way. This is too much cruelty and the arrogance of some is quite unpleasant to witness.
