Sweden launches 'Chlamydia Monday'

The Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet - SMI) has designated Monday September 13th as national chlamydia day to draw attention to the infection and to encourage more people to undergo tests.

New statistics indicate that fewer people are succumbing to the sexually transmitted disease, but the number of infections remains high - with four people per hour contracting the disease in Sweden.

"The day is needed to increase awareness and get more people to test themselves," said Viveca Urwitz at SMI.

Chlamydia Monday is a coordinated effort across the country. The initiative has been taken by SMI which on July 1st 2010 assumed responsibility for working to combat HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

SMI warns that chlamydia is an infection that can affect both men and women, and can lead to sterility. While symptoms can often be unclear or completely absent, the infection needs treatment and can be identified with the help of a simple test.

The test is made on a urine sample and is free of charge, SMI stated on its dedicated Chlamydia Monday webpage.

During the first half of 2010 17,253 case of chlamydia were reported to SMI, a decline of 8 percent on the corresponding period of 2009.

While they are at it. How about throwing a few words about the danger of having unprotected sex. Using condoms is alien to a very large percentage of this population.

Everyone is of the opinion that "it won't happen to me", thus they don't use condoms.

But this really is insane. In a country so "free and liberated about sex", having 4 people get infected an hour with ONE STD is ridiculous. If only sex ed and knowledge about disease were as widespread as Chlamydia...

@Rishonim

Using condoms is not alien to anyone that have an extra leg in between. They simply think that without condoms will heighten their sexual pleasure. Also sometimes is the the women who insisted on having sex without it. I definately have came across acouple of women in the past, What to do...to do or not to do since little brother is not behaving himself!!!!! don't give me a big lecture on self control or will power. But I still prefer to use condom than using the hand

@izbz,

I have also came across those women who prefer the bare flesh experience. Remember once this girl called all the name in the book cause i refused go without the rain coat. You just have to walk away from those. Some of my male friends tell me the reason they don't like using the rubber is because of difficulties keeping it up. it's a mental strain. Sick
