Left Party employs stripper at election party

Left Party supporters were treated to a female stripper at an open meeting in Järna near Stockholm over the weekend, causing several members of the crowd to storm out in disgust.

The stripper, who performs under the stage name Miss Cookie, is reported to have stripped down to all but her panties - with the party's logo disguising her nipples.

But the show, entitled "Rock the arse off the right", did not please everyone in attendance with several leaving in protest. The choice of entertainment was however defended by Södertälje councillor Staffan Norberg.

"As burlesque and circus and cabaret, which I think it was marketed as, I think it is okay," he said.

Norberg interpreted the theme of the performance as an interpretation of the right's superficiality falling away to reveal only the Left's core.

"I thought that there was a political message," Norberg said adding, "but broadly, naturally."

Despite the Left Party's high profile as a feminist party, Norberg remained unrepentant.

"If you don't like burlesque and lack a sense of humour and satire then this was not the right place to be," he said.

According to local media reports there were families with children in attendance. Several people are reported to have left during the strip show - but Norberg refuted the information. He underlined that there was also a half-naked man on stage.

"He juggled with knives and ate an apple at the same time, to great amusement among the audience," he said.

According to the Dagens Nyheter (DN), Miss Cookie is unperturbed by the attention, arguing that her act should be considered "burlesque with an element of humour" and not "striptease".

"I think that a woman has the right to use her body for humour. There was also a man in the show who stripped down to reveal a naked upper-body and was thus more naked than I, but no one is upset about that," she said to DN.

This is hilarious. I just love reading about politicians who should be in another line of work over here :-) Blog posts gone wrong, events planned that should be bachelor parties, platform statements issued that are truly amusing if they think people really want to live like brainless bunnies in a warren :-) Elections, no matter where, are such fun to read about :-)

First the breastpump comment from the party leader and now this. It is kind of weird that V has so many female voters.

It's funny reading all the comments on DN and it certainly seems a strange choice of entertainment for a party of radical feminists. Although I've got nothing against nudity I think it's hard to defend stripping in this sort of context as it in my view contributes to the objectification of the human body - something Vänsterpartiet are supposed to be against. They interviewed a party spokesperson on SVT and she seemed to agree that it was inappropriate (http://svtplay.se/v/2145521).

I am enjoying reading the LOCAL. As an American citizen married to a fantastic Swede,it is hillarious to read that your democratic process is as much a circus as ours. Vibrant cultures have vibrant debates. We have had a tremendous benefit from being a multi cultural society, but as the Indians, African slaves, and various immigrant groups have discovered my white protestant "tribe" can be afraid of change. Thank God for the likes of Martin Luther King who graciously brought peaceful change to my homeland. Racism is a dangerous force. It leads to other fanatic "isms" like Nazism and Communism that millions of my fathers generation died fighting to erradicate.

I guess as the old american saying goes "politics makes strange bedfellows" I never understood the feminist aspect of the communist left party. Communism as described originally by "Das Capital" and now shown by the "breast pump comments and strippers doesn't seem to be feminist the way my Swedish wife thinks of feminism.

@StuartM

I looked at the picture in Aftonbladet....damn that woman has some legs! She looks like she could play for the Chicago Bears.

The article says several times that people left in protest, but also that Norberg "refuted" that information. So which is correct ?

why are politicians so horny all the time?
19:52 September 16, 2010 by Rebel
Are Vänster strippers attractive? Personally, I would think the Greens have the most attractive women but I doubt they would go naked except in a protest against fur.

Lars Ohly (left-party leader) is a funny guy, he was confronted with his own words from an intervju in 2004 recently . He had said that he was sad to see the Berlin wll fall. He denied ever saying it and refused to look at the intervju...... He also said that he had recieved texts/sms from a friend witnessing the fall of communism in Prag 1989. The world first text/sms was sent in 1992 wich ofcourse makes it difficult to recieve one in -89. Other frogs that have leaped out of Ohlys mouth is that he had played soccer with one of Swedens most famous players, Nacka Skoglund, that never happened. He refused to stop reffering to himself as a communist until 2005 and ofcourse he is still a communist even if he doesn´t call himself that any more.
