A man from Borås in western Sweden has been charged with fraud after taking advantage of a technical fault to withdraw 1.6 million kronor ($224,000) from a cash machine, despite having only a couple of thousand kronor in savings.

The man used his bank card to make a total of 315 withdrawals during the night of April 6th 2009 at several locations of the SEB bank in Borås and nearby Gothenburg, according to a report in the local Borås Tidning daily.

The 33-year-old has now been charged with aggravated fraud.

The man was easily identified, as he had used his own bank card, but is reported to have fled overseas for a while. When he returned to Sweden he turned himself in to the police.

The man is previously known to the police for crimes including narcotics offences and theft.

SEB was hit by several incidents during the evening before the fault was noticed and dealt with on April 7th.

A man in Landskrona in southern Sweden was, for example, able to withdraw 2.8 million kronor despite having only 80 kronor in his account. He was later convicted and sentenced to 22 months in prison.

Two years in jail for taking a bank's money; equal sentence for taking a person's life. I see where the Swedish government puts its priorities..

Rape less than 2 years in most cases.

Murder less than 2 years (just search this site for examples)

Downloading MP3s or taking money from a bank = 2 or more years.

Yep, a government for the people - what a ****ing joke. It's all fun and games till a corporation feels like its been robbed, then their lobbyists, lawyers and other low lifes come out to play.

On the other hand, their million/billion dollar financial games get swept under the carpet without real accountability.

Vote Pirate Party, lets get transparent.

It's ok to put the little guys in jail, while the bank bosses who have wrecklessly cocked up millions of peoples lives are instead rewarded and allowed to walk away with million pound golden handshakes.

How many bank bosses have gone to jail for knowingly and repeatedly overcharging punters on a large scale?

I guess I'm the only one who sees nothing wrong in this. Cases of fraud are very easy to provide evidence for once it's been found out whilst something like rape can be nearly impossible to prove (and it often turns into a their word vs. their word situation). Which is why cases like this are pretty consistent in their rulings whilst rape/murder sentences can vary greatly depending on evidence.

what kind of fault allows such things?

is this really fraud? The man was under no responsibility to report the error, once discovered he would be required to repay. By not doing so this amounts to theft not fraud.
