Åkesson waits for party invites to cooperate

Published: 20 Sep 10 09:42 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/29128/20100920/

One day after its history entry into parliament, the Sweden Democrats now await an invitation to join a coalition with the other parties. However, so far no parties have contacted leader Jimmie Åkesson.

After winning 5.7 percent of support, the Sweden Democrats gained more support than both the Left Party and the Christian Democrats, both at 5.6 percent.

Åkesson appeared on Sveriges Radio just before 7 a.m. on Monday morning, telling news agency TT that he has not made contact with any of the other parties since it became clear that his party would enter parliament.

He had hoped to hear from the other parties through the night.

"No, not to me personally," he told TT in terms of whether any parties had sought contact with him.

Åkesson would not reveal what strategy the party has for making contact with the other parties.

"We have talked very little through the night and we are acting accordingly," he said.

"However, we will keep to ourselves until further notice."

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has not made any statements Monday morning. According to him, there was no doubt as to which strategy the Alliance parties would pursue in terms of dealing with the Sweden Democrats.

"I have been clear about how we will handle this uncertain situation. We will not cooperate with or make ourselves dependent on the Sweden Democrat," he said late Sunday night.

He added that contact would be made with the Green Party and he was hoping for a positive response.

Even if Reinfeldt offers the Green Party ministerial posts, spokespeople Peter Eriksson and Maria Wetterstrand do not envision any collaboration in front of them.

"Would I make myself minister for the environment and administer the construction of 10 new nuclear power stations? No thanks," said Wetterstrand.

However, political scientist Li Bennich-Björkman believes that the party could take the opportunity to cooperate with the Alliance. She is not impressed by Wetterstrand's denials.

"They have said that they do not want to be a support party, but if they were offered a government post, that is something else, then they would not be a support party," said Bennich-Björkman.

"They would isolate or deprive the Sweden Democrats of the kingmaker role. It could be a cause worth considering."

The Social Democrats posted their worst election result in recent memory, with a preliminary 30.9 percent of support, creating doubts about the future of Red-Green cooperation.

"I have no plans to resign," said leader Mona Sahlin, when was asked the question on television on Sunday.

The following are the results of the parliamentary election with all districts reporting and the change in support in percentage points from the previous election:

Social Democrats: 30.9 percent (-4.2)
Moderates: 30 percent (+3.9)
Greens: 7.2 percent (+2)
Liberals: 7.1 percent (-0.4)
Centre: 6.6 percent (-1.3)
Sweden Democrats: 5.7 percent (+2.8)
Christian Democrats: 5.6 percent (-1)
Left: 5.6 percent (-0.3)

Well done to the Moderates, Swedish Democrates and Greens who gained the most percentage gains in the election.
10:36 September 20, 2010 by Birbun
Don't be fooled.

Even SD are socialists and in fact they want to keep big welfare.

The difference with Socialdemocrats is they want big welfare only for native swedes.

The point instead it's the big welfare should be cut to ZERO for ALL and you need to low the taxes to maximum 15%.

No party in Sweden is really free market and this is a pity.

The lazy people, the drunks and the parasites on welfare are still celebrating in this election.

Brilliant. And then a law enforcement system even less effective than the current one and funded by nothing would protect you all from the crimewave that would follow. Well worth seeing.

Give immigration ministry to Åkesson, and lets see how the bubble burst.
10:49 September 20, 2010 by RobinHood
IMona and Fredrick both know it is electoral suicide for either of them to do a deal with the Sweden Democrats; both their parties would collapse if they did. It's up to them to cobble togethor a deal to deprive the Sweden Democrats of their coveted role as king maker.

Sooner rather than later please, the nation is getting nervous.
11:01 September 20, 2010 by EtoileBrilliant
Can a sitting government call another election (say in 30 days) in order to test the result. Quite often people vote with their hearts the first time and with their minds on the second.
11:59 September 20, 2010 by jbat
SD is RACIST... The PM and other make the ABSOLUTE correct decision not to cooperate with Swedish Taliban party (Taliban use Islam to gain support, SD use Islam to gain support too....)...
13:11 September 20, 2010 by Markus D
Hang on guys, I consider SD like a young man now settled down in life´s responsibilities but was once a teenager with wild, extreme views on everything. People (and parties) do grow up,
13:15 September 20, 2010 by yoni
The long silence of swedish people has broke dowen and paid its price. On sunday the real swedish attitude and image to words immigration and racism has revield."Every thing is precalculated" .all parties specially the alliance need SD in thier side in this inflation era. Why?The alliance cannot find real solution to the escalating rate of unemployment, the only solution is to limit immigration and put restrictions to words immigrant to workers. There has been long discussion from swedish people that immigrants are taking out job.Alliance cannot do this agenda since thier goal is to open more bussiness and encourage immigrant bussiness. So the alliance needs SD to help them limit immigration and secure jobs to swedish citizens. It is simple and needs no more evidence to evaluate the alliance are with SD.How can an alliance party leader with in fraction of seconds after the release of election results can declare they need green party .Green party + SD+alliance it is simple to creat conslution the image and direction of the poletics in sweden. With this result there is not immigration and integration question. Now it is clear for me as an immigrant why i have spent four years in sweden with out job and integration sweden. The swedish have revield to the world and specially to the naive immigrants how racist they are.SD agenda is not only to limit immigration but to limit ISLAMISM and close kebabe shopes. From my perspective this poletical direction is going to creat real problem to sweden both internal and internationaly such as haterd and crim among immigrants, immigrants born in sweden to words swedish citizens."Real problem".The consquence goes beyond this.No one benefits from SD coming to congress ,instead the big losers are swedish peope.
13:17 September 20, 2010 by judoflares
Am I ok as a white british european now in sweden or do i fit into the forigner catorgory? I'm guessing that the swedish democrats are only angry with the muslims and the blacks so i should still be able to hang about unnoticed as long as i don't talk much. I guess this is just one of the flaws of racism.

Will there be lynch mobs outside SFI?

oh and birbun, if you took the time to get to know some lazy people and drunks as you call them you would find that they need help to get ttheir lives back on track after some hardship or trauma. they don't choose to be this way, society creates them?

Stop being so lazy yourself and do some work in the comunity and find out for yourself some of these peoples stories, i doubt you will have sympathy but at least you would gain some knowledge. Lucky for you you are able tolive in your little bubble without help from others as your obviously unprepared to help anyone else.

judoflares....it's thanks to slimeballs like you that britain and sweden are third world dumps. with the SD, the swedes may finally have some sensible policies on migration instead of following britain into islamic african sharia oblivion.
14:00 September 20, 2010 by witsltd
These guys from Sweden D. are like the third unnecessary wheel. Not a good day for Sweden.

It will require some serious tactical moves from moderates, especially Reinfeld. That will be interesting to see.
14:02 September 20, 2010 by Jan M
Out of interest if little Jimmy's brand of politics results in Sweden's expulsion from the EU or economic sanctions do people think that Sweden will be economically stronger or weaker? You only have a few seconds to answer.

Bearing in mind of course that alot of what's been proposed on immigration is incompatible with EU Treaty obligations. Just one example of the SD finding it easy to spout from the sidelines whilst not quite knowing how reality works.
14:32 September 20, 2010 by mary10014
the best solution is to make a new goverment from Social Democraty and Moderatarna. 2 years prime minister for Mona Sahlin, and 2 years for Fredrik.

In this situation no place for such Nazist parties.
15:01 September 20, 2010 by RoyceD
@Yoni - The word is "towards". It makes it really hard to read what you have to say, sorry man.

This is actually a great example of why these "governments" are out dated these days. Comon people it's 2010! Why do we still support government models developed thousands of years ago???
15:30 September 20, 2010 by here for the summer
@yoni .. I think that you overestimate the contribution you make to Sweden sitting around for four years on the dole without a job.

16:53 September 20, 2010 by calebian22
Jan,

The European Commission's new Joint EU resettlement program states, "that EU members remain free to decide whether they want to resettle at all, and if so, how many refugees they wish to resettle." You seem to be the one who is out of touch. Sweden can reduce the influx of new refugees from outside of Europe to zero. How is that for reality?
17:49 September 20, 2010 by Social Hypocrisy
Hi calebian

You forgot the ... at the beginning and end of your quote!

If you are going to quote (especially laws) please be so kind as to provide us with a link.
17:56 September 20, 2010 by Alex Matthew
@RoyceD - Perhaps before you correct another's English you should edit your post first. The word "comon" does not exist in the English language. I'm assuming you meant to write either "come on" or "common." I suppose "come on" makes more sense, though. Anyway, could you please enlighten us as to which parliamentary democracy you are referring to that was created "thousands" of years ago, and is now the basis of Sweden's government today?

20:20 September 20, 2010 by lasse12345
I disagree with the opinions of SD, but come on people - they are now a democratically elected party. People out there actually have these opinions.

And democracy is about inclusiveness - even with the ones you disagree with, such as SD. Do you really think the SD-voters will care how loud the remaining 94% of the people screams their disagreement. Wouldn't it be smarter to give them a bit and meet halfway. As far as I see democracy this is exactly the mechanism that makes it a more stable system: avoiding extremisms by openly taken in the compromise.

Or would you rather ignore the issue and fuel the fire of the really rabiate people out there. The ones who are actually nazi.

I just checked up some interesting statistics by a US organization on:

http://www.migrationinformation.org/usfocus/display.cfm?ID=406

SD has a very valid point which apparently the other parties in Sweden refuse to touch upon. Immigrants are over represented among unemployed and thereby living on social welfare. Anyway read for yourself.

Social Hypocrisy,

http://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/summary/docs/resettlement_2009_en.pdf
21:04 September 20, 2010 by vladd777
With reference to:

http://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/summary/docs/resettlement_2009_en.pdf

...Resettlement in the EU is currently carried out through national resettlement

programmes, with little consultation or coordination between countries (10 have

annual resettlement programmes, while some others do this only occassionaly and

some do not carry out resettlement at all).

The proposal aims to establish a mechanism through which this consultation and

coordination can take place.

But every country would still be free to decide whether to resettle at all, and if

so, how many refugees...

This is why we need a more balanced attitude.

There comes a time when one has to take the blinkers off.
21:40 September 20, 2010 by Douglas Garner
To adequately evaluate the productivity of immigrants, we should factor out a couple of years as required for refugees to learn the language before really entering swedish society.

It might also be interesting to look at how long Swedes emmigrating to other countries take before they can find meaningful employment!
21:54 September 20, 2010 by Syftfel
I find myself in disgareement with iraniboy 100% of the time. So too now. Education will not cure racism! Respect from arriving cultures will! After all, we need immigrants in Sweden. I also beleive there is very little true ``racism`` taking place in Sweden iraniboy notwithstanding. It is mostly offensive behavior that is at issue, not skin color or immigrant status. My own spouse is of indian/mestizo/honduran background, and thus it would be difficult, one would think, for me to be a ``racist`` like i-boy would have it. My theory is that i-boy right now is watching his vile idol creep, nuclear bomb seeking, A-jad in New York. Now there's a man that can be trusted(?). And i-boy, when you respond to this, critizea ideas, not people. Don't call me a "stupid American" again. OK?
23:54 September 20, 2010 by Andersson
Any loose statement ,on the pretet of freedom of speech, by this newly emerged racist political party would be tantamount to politcal rape to this country. They really have to understand that politics is serious business and any immature statement or initiative could be really devastating for a deloped country on international level.
00:52 September 21, 2010 by RoyceD
@ Alex Mathew

Fair call about the "comon" phrase I used, needed a ' in there somewhere. But in regards to your question, in my opinion the tradition of electing a leader to physically travel to a meeting to represent your own opinion is a thing of the past. We just need to wake up and realize what the internet has actually done for us. We are now free to communicate our opinion instantaneously and at a very little cost. I imagine a close future where instead of voting for parties to represent our beliefs we will be able to directly vote on the actual topics ourselves.

The days of monarchies and dictatorships and even parliamentary democracies are in their last days, sure it wont change tomorrow, but I bet our grandkids will be wondering what all this fuss was about because it will seem so strange to them that we elect strangers to speak on our behalf.

I want to vote on the issues, not vote for someone who might vote the way they said they would... depending on current party lines, alliance terms, and in party bickering.
01:36 September 21, 2010 by Biorealist
***However, so far no parties have contacted leader Jimmie Åkesson.***

Of course they haven't, that would go against their brainwashed belief that reducing immigration = far right.

They'd rather relax and enjoy Sweden having the highest level of rape in Europe.
02:14 September 21, 2010 by mieoux
If you think the rapists are immigrants then you are fooling yourself. You have an ideal of what you think a Swedish person is and when that fails you want to pin it on immigrants.

Anyway to all immigrants in Sweden, try if you can to go to America instead of staying in Sweden, especially if you are not an idiot, if you are stupid you won't survive in the US. Assuming you are not stupid, In America you can become American and you will not be "invandrare" forever like in Sweden. Americans have experience with capitalism so in America you can make real money - many, many zeros before the comma or dot more than you would in Sweden.

If you are smart and enterprising, and/or you have some good ideas and you are an invandrare in Sweden then USA is the country for you - make the move now, by the way Green Card lottery for US starts in October, go to the US government site and apply directly (do the online search and pick the Dot State or Dot Gov results), don't use any website that tells you they will do it for you for a fee. If you have about a million dollars (wait maybe it's 500,000 dollars) to invest then you don't need the Green Card Lottery, you can just call the US embassy and they will help you move to the US as an investor (with great customer service). Oh yeah also if you have a PhD and you are published, you also don't need the Green Card lottery, America wants your brains, go online and take a look (you're smart enough to find what you need). You will love America, much more than Sweden, and as a bonus you can live in a better climate where you choose what kind of winter you want to have or even no winter at all. Forget Sweden, you're wasting your time in this nazi country.
08:58 September 21, 2010 by rugla
Why is it that the minute anyone brings immigrations issues you are called a Nazi or racist? A great portion of the Sverige Democratic vote came from young voters, try to understand why?

When was the last time they got a free furnished apartment, and funds to live? Many kids are barely making it, and have a tough time finding jobs, economic crisis, etc, it is also too easy to live off welfare thanks to the Social Democrats.

There are single mothers living close to the poverty line here in Sweden, then they hear arguments like, we need the fork force, Swedes are not reproducing as much, well they don´t have time they have to go to work to fund for the migration population to come and live off welfare, it is a vicious circle, and there is resentment amongst them, I do not blame them, don't agree with them 100% but do not blame them!

We are non confrontational by nature and afraid of being labeled, but the vast majority of Swedes feel this way, we are just too chicken to express it!

Thus why you see this movement, Swedes are not against race, we are against abuse and dysfunction of the system, and let's face it is not working and something has to give, sad as it might seem to many of us, the movement will continue unless we take care of our own young first, then think about taking care of others, people our house is not in order.

We Swedes are losing our identity and it is going fast!, and that is what the small movement is about, and unless something is done and the more we label them as Nazis, fascist, racist, the bigger it will become, we need to understand the issue, and work with it, rather than fight a label.
