Riksdag revamp could limit far-right: reports

Members of several Swedish political parties are calling for a restructuring of the Riksdag to minimize the influence of the far-right Sweden Democrats.

The parties are investigating whether it is possible to shift the make-up of parliamentary committees to reduce the sway of the far-right, anti-immigrant party which was voted into parliament for the first time at the weekend’s general elections, several Swedish dailies reported.

Both Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's Moderate Party and the main opposition Social Democrats are reportedly involved.

The far-right party won 5.7 percent of the vote and 20 seats in parliament, according to an initial count.

As things stand, that would be enough for it to automatically have a representative on parliamentary committees, which today count 17 members each.

But the Moderate Party was investigating the possibility of cutting the number of committee seats to 15, the Aftonbladet daily among others reported, citing unnamed sources.

Such a move would block the Sweden Democrats from representation on the committees and reduce their influence in parliament.

The Moderate Party looks set to create a new minority government after Sunday's vote along with three centre-right coalition partners.

The parties themselves refused to comment until after the final tally of votes, including ballots cast overseas, was completed. That is due late Wednesday or early Thursday.

But there were signs of opposition from some members of Reinfeldt's coalition, including a senior member of the Liberal Party, according to one report.

"It is better having them inside the tent pissing out that keeping them outside pissing in," Carl B. Hamilton, a deputy with the party, told the Dagens Nyheter (DN) daily.

Blocking the far-right from the parliamentary committees "will allow them to play the martyr," he added.

"It is unwise to give them that possibility," he said.

This is dangerous.

The SD must be confronted in debate and not by changing democracy.

Such a change is exactly what people accuse the SD of wanting to do!

They have been democratically elected. Tough luck. But you can't ignore 5,7% of the voters. That would really be playing with fire. Look at Belgium and the Netherlands to see what could happen in Sweden if the other parties try to ignore the SD. The SD will probably blow itself up. See the article today about a SD member wanting to shoot people. There are probably more nutters like this one who are going to take their seats in Councils all over the country. No political experience and no discipline. One thing for sure, politics won't be dull for some time to come!

There are going to be quite alot of newspapers like Aftonbladet and Expressen being sued soon and some politicians like Lars Ohly. To call SD racist or nazi publically in a newspaper or on TV breaks the following law:

From Swedish law

5 kap 1 § Brottsbalken:

"Den som utpekar någon såsom brottslig eller klandervärd i sitt levnadssätt eller eljest lämnar uppgift som är ägnad att utsätta denne för andras missaktning, dömes för förtal till böter. "

-Page 5:9 i Brottsbalksommentaren, 2005, står att även en grupp som utpekas omfattas av detta skydd om det går att härleda detta till vissa individer.

This is a law that even newspapers that follow not just politicians.

@mcchatter. these crooks the sd surely they dont have political discipline and experince. they are just there to disrganise this country. remember that sween now is leading in the economy in the whole world and if these crooks come in now the economy is going to go down and swedish image is going t go down.

i have a friends in usa and switerzland. they have alredy told me that pple there now see sweden as a nazis country and they have taken there trust out of them. i realy felt bad wen they said that to me coz of the sd imagine.

What both moderates and social democrats need to do is acknowledge that there are serious failures in the way immigration policy is handled today and address the issue.....BUT.... before addressing the current failed immigration policy, hold a re-election. You cannot have a minority running this country, it has never worked and will never work and should never be allowed.

Restructuring of Riksdag to avoid and ignore 100's of thousands of voters is not at all democratic, and would signal a downward spiral for Sweden.

(PS. The local, you tarts. I used a word you used in your article, and my post got rejected for profanity. Fair enough, but lets have one standard ha!?)

There is fear that the Facsist Party might cause instability in Sweden. Though colorful, the Fascists are too narrow minded to be dangerous. Their role in Swedish politics is unlikely to go beyond shouting obscentiy about minorities and speak about the supermacy of the white race. Their effect is indirect, as they let themselves be used for spreading fear and dividing soceity so that the ruling elite would tighten the reign of power. The race ticket has been a powerful tool for pro-corporation elite rulers in the US for hundreds of war, so also in South Africa for about half-century; it can also be used for power-hungry, and greedy rulers, as in France and Italy.

Fear the right wing!

Like the elite rulers in the US, which control the local and world economy (particularly third world economy) through easy creadit and indebtdness, the new elite rulers in the Sweden will complete what they have already started recently, i.e., privitizing and starving school, health care and other public services so that taxes will be reduced for corporation and the wealth class (neo-conservative ieology). At the same time easy loans would creat the illusion of weath in the short run. In the long run rise in the supply of money is inflationary, which ttransfers income from the working people and other fixed income earners to corporations and the wealth.

Sweden will emerge as a country split between the haves (the local rich and others from the rest of the world) and the have-nots (the rest of Sweden). Likewise services (schools, hospitals and universities) will develop along income divison, one for the rich and the other for the poor. Such a system is unstable without a sizable number networks of security and prison network to squash strikes, walk-outs, demonstrations and revolts.
15:14 September 22, 2010 by Swedesmith
McChatter and Lucky Strike, I agree. Like it or not, these people were duly elected. To change the rules to limit their influence would only make a mockery of the democratic process.
15:18 September 22, 2010 by flintis
This kind of censure is what gave rise to the 3rd Reich.

The political parties must be democratic & abide by the wishes of the electorate, if they the M, FP, KD, C, S & MP get their acts together & stop bickering & these activists stop with their demonstrations, then the SD will slip quietly back from whence it came, hopefully taking the V with it.
15:23 September 22, 2010 by hpunlimited
No matter what you call yourself as a party, you can not go against democratic principles. If SD gets 5.8% of the vote then they should be represented as such in parlament. If a party does not agree with this, then that party has nothing to do in the parlament themselves. That is the bottom line, no IF'S or BUT'S. There is alot of bull**** going on. Name calling, nazi this racist this. It is just kindergarten level and I can't believe politicians, men and women actually believe that they can snub the SDs representation.
15:29 September 22, 2010 by Syftfel
It is revealing to watch the political establishment, especially the liberal left, squirm and manipulate. Now they wish to alter basic democratic principles, because they didn't like the result. This would be reminiscent of Hugo Chavez, Kim Jong Il or Walter Ulbricht, and many other third world, pathetic, dictators. I wouldn't put it past the social dems to actually fraudulently sqew the election results even if they have to cheat, steal and lie. Where does that end? Accept it all you communists, anarchists, lazy union workers and liberals! Sweden's social democratic era had come to a permanent end, and a new Swedish dawn is afoot. Forward towards a new Nordic democratic land!

Mussolini, who knew a thing or two about Fascism, defined it as the merger of State and (large) Corporate interests.

Fascism is already here in Sweden, in the UK, particularly obvious in the USA, and virtually all of the Western world. Every piece of legislation passed is designed to destroy the SME and help the large corporates. The middle class are being plundered, not so obvious here in Sweden yet (but it will become obvious soon), but clear as crystal in the USA and the UK.

What is required is the almost complete rolling back of state powers and the trial of all corrupt, bought and paid for politicians for treason against the people.
15:46 September 22, 2010 by travels
It is what it is, that's what people voted and must be respected without starting with strategies to sideline election results.
16:34 September 22, 2010 by anglesaxon
all these boycotts from the opposition idiots are being counter productive, surely if they have half a brain between them. this is not democracy.the right party will go from strength to strength in the next 4years and then they will have to take notice. there is plenty of publicity on the media, all bad, but most people can see through their lies.
16:38 September 22, 2010 by miss79
opposition are not idiots..they should not working the the moderates..is better that way
16:42 September 22, 2010 by crofab
I may not like the Sweden Democrats either, but is rigging democratic institutions really the appropriate way of dealing with them?
16:47 September 22, 2010 by deblom
Yttrandefrihet.....the right of all to say and to write what they think .....

This word is used nearly every day in our SFI course. Its literally shoved down our throat and always delivered with a sense of smugness and superiority. It was even used in our Nationellt prov today!!!

Democracy is the other smug word used every single day....

What no-one told us was that "all" apparently means " only some" in Sweden and apparently Democracy means Doing it "our" Way or the Highway. "Our" belonging obviously to "some".

What a crock of ####. Sverige behöver växa upp!!!!
16:56 September 22, 2010 by Gurkhan
for the democracy to keep working in sweden, they should not make/change laws for particular fears... the laws and committees should be kept as they are and SD should be granted what they have achieved, otherwise there is a possibility that they might be granted to act as victims in this condition and raise even more awareness of their party, claim more votes in the next elections... let them do their opposition in the committees and just let democracy work in sweden, the system will either change them into a more humane party, or they will manage to disprove themselves by falling into a marginal position.

but if greens and left party are allowed representation, so should SD... just to keep peace in the country, they should be allowed in whatever they have achieved... so that they have no justification to run violent!
17:07 September 22, 2010 by riose
To be democrats the should follow the constitution, and do not discriminate anyone by race, believes, or gender.

Because people, this is not democracy: http://www.boingboing.net/2010/08/11/tom-the-dancing-bug-15.html

(It is, but not the good democracy that we like)
17:12 September 22, 2010 by GefleFrequentFlyer
@McChatter

I agree. If the moderates wants minimize the SD's, they will simply have to take the smug route and treat them with the respect of votes they earned.

Simply stonewalling them creates the "martyr" situation and will only play into thier favor.

The fact is, if the SD's want to gain 18% in the next couple of elections as they have stated, they will have to tone down thier rhetoric in order to court that number. That is the dynamic in european politics; all the parties are extreme in thier message, because that's what they need to do to get heard, because they know once in parliment, thier agenda gets watered down.

As before, I'm happy for the SD's as its a indicator that Sweden has woken up from years of bad policy, but the SDs are going to have to learn how to deal with parliment, and to tone down thier message and mature.
17:32 September 22, 2010 by Argentina84
@Adrian: I agree with you! With the right wing on the power, Sweden will become a third world country.
17:41 September 22, 2010 by Truth-Teller
@Tiddler

"Mussolini, who knew a thing or two about Fascism, defined it as the merger of State and (large) Corporate interests"

Not sure about that one.

Communism is where the State runs the means of production.

Capitalism is where private enterprise runs the means of production.

All Capitalist Societies have Government that oversees the means of production by regulating the economy.

By this definition, all counties that are not communist, are fascist.
18:15 September 22, 2010 by mojofat
@tiddler

"Fascists believe that a nation is an organic community that requires strong leadership, singular collective identity, and the will and ability to commit violence and wage war in order to keep the nation strong. They claim that culture is created by the collective national society and its state, that cultural ideas are what give individuals identity, and thus they reject individualism."

The U.S. fosters individual liberty and loves its rock stars, sports heroes, and movie stars. If there is any place the "individual" rules supreme, it's there. Therefore, your point is wholly incorrect. The U.S. is not a fascist state (and, imo neither are the UK or Sweden).

Hey, do the russians play dirty politics to keep a major party from assuming its rightful power in the Duma? If not then maybe the Russians need to send some advisors to Sweden and lecture the leaders of the two major blocks on freedom of speech and democracy.

I am actually hearing people complain that they will vote for the Swedish Democrats out of contempt it they are not allowed to assume their rightful place in the Riksdag.

Swedish democratic values...yeah right.

I am an American of Scandinavian decent and I and many other Americans are happy with the recent election results and success of the Sweden Democrats. To be honest the USA has been tremendusly damaged by the onslaught of multculturalizm. Many of our major Cities like Detroit, LA, and New Orleans are in ruins. Our schools are battle grounds. We do not think of the Swedish people as Nazis. Please protect your great peoples and culture. Do not bow to the multicults. England is fighting back. Denmark is fighting back. DO NOT stifle that voice even if it has it´s origins in a hick-town neo-nazi/ semi racistic movement!

You DO NOT refuse to sit in the same room with a democratically chosen opponent!

This is 3-year old´s behaviour. You DO NOT treat a grown people like this!
07:17 September 23, 2010 by flintis
@ Jarvilainennen: wrote " This is 3-year old´s behaviour. You DO NOT treat a grown people like this!# I think you mean "grown people should not behave like this"# But then again these are politicians who have always been renowned for being childish.
07:47 September 23, 2010 by Rebel
Sad, the Swedish Democrats have put a harpoon into the myth that Swedish politicians are fair-minded men and women who support democratic values.

Yes, there are fascists in the Riksdag, but it remains to be proven that the Swedish Democrats are as much fascist, or more fascist, than their more polite (on the outside) collegues.
09:11 September 23, 2010 by samwise
they didn't change rules when the communist left party got as much votes and the nationalists weren't in the parliament, did they? I bet some enlightened fair-minded tolerant geniuses are plotting to ban nationalist parties altogether. Why don't they make the committee 2 members?

In theory you can't introduce a new law in order to punish a past act which was not considered a crime (e.g. getting 5.7% of the votes) at the time.

It will only help the impression that the nationalists are bullied here. Victim hood is the best weapon a small party can have.

The similarities between Germany in the late 1920s and early 1930s is striking here in Sweden (and elsewhere).

Leftist groups are attacking their political opponents openly and covertly, both using words and violence. Just like they did then. SD is sitting latently as sheep to slaughter and look like they are just trying to point out some core issues that established parties have done wrong, while most know that there is (or was, I don't know which) a core in SD that are as militant and undemocratic as the leftistas are. Meanwhile leftists and establishment are defending everything, even things that are clearly wrong (like allowing more immigrants to come when they obviously don't work) and in doing so are closing the door on the reason why people are not working (taxes, regulation and prevalent discrimination). Meanwhile SD actually have nothing to offer solution wise other than more prejudice and more regulation and discriminatory practices.

Sweden is being drawn to the left and towards more planning and market interferance and there is no end in sight for the plight of the immigrant who wants to work, for the sick to be allowed a decent living and subsistence conditions and the young have a future going through an educational system in severe crisis.

Sweden will probably become the next Ireland, seeing most of its young talent migrate out while leaving the poorest behind.

You sir, are an idiot and a liar. I doubt ANYONE thinks Sweden is a "Nazi" country because 5.7% of the people democratically voted for the SD. However, if Sweden allows the changing of democracy, THEN the world will view it for what it is. Totalitarian. As if that would be a shock.
