Swedish prince accepts foreign duty ultimatum

Prince Carl Philip, second in line to the Swedish throne, has accepted the offer of a new employment contract from the Armed Forces, including an obligation serve overseas, reported the Expressen daily.

The prince, who is a reserve officer with the rank of major and is attached to the Amf1 amphibious regiment outside Stockholm, could thus be sent to Afghanistan and other global trouble spots at short notice.

The decision by commander-in-chief Sverker Göransson to issue the new contract in June, has drawn criticism from some quarters, including the Swedish Military Officers' Association (Officersförbundet).

Association chairperson Lars Fresker has been highly critical of how the issue has been managed by the military authorities.

"The details over how often the postings would occur, and possible exceptions regarding having small children, or sickness, are not clear. There is a significant level of concern among members," he said last week.

All employees, including civil employees, were given until September 20th to decide, and The Local reported last week that 600 of the 16,000 people employed by the Swedish Armed Forces had rejected the new terms and conditions.

But the Swedish prince, who completed his national service at the Amf1 regiment as a skipper, was not among the rebels.

"The prince has responded to the letter and declared himself willing to complete foreign duty," said Major Kristina Swaan at the regiment to Expressen.

However as the prince is enlisted as a reserve officer he is subject to special regulations and can only be order to served overseas if he was simultaneously actively serving in the regiment.

Swedish forces are currently operating in Afghanistan, Kosovo and the Gulf of Aden.

For god's sake, keep the guy in the country. Sending him abroad will endanger many more lives than his and cost millions in extra security. I'd hate to pay for his military adventures.

As a Swede who's done service and on reserve, I could tell you we are better off not even being part of foreign service, it is a pointless cause and cost, when push comes to shove we would not be able to fight our way out of a brown paper bag!

I agree Carl Philip is a liability, he is better off playing with cars, if he plays toy soldier he becomes a juicy target and others are placed in danger, whilst he has a laugh getting some excitement

Dude has a rank of major? Is that ceremonial or what? I thought that sorta rank took at least a decade and several tours abroad to earn.

If he actually serves abroad I'd be impressed. If he serves in Afghanistan, than I'd be really impressed.

Whats the problem? Prince Harry (Brithsh) served in Afghanistan, why can't Prince Carl Philip?
19:30 October 1, 2010 by Vendorune
I think that is a very good regiment for Carl Philip to be with and its a good example for Sweden. Now sending this regiment (even without Carl Philip!) to Afghanistan is total lunacy! Afghanistan is an arid land-locked country! Kosovo is also land-locked and another pile of trash for these men (with or without Carl). Now Gulf of Aden has some possibilities... Yeah, its not the Baltic, but still experience with foreigner services is always useful for everyone, including Carl Philip.

Oh, for the record, sending anyone to Afghanistan is lunacy -- its just a waste of time country.

I don't understand you, do you mean that swedish armed forces are not trained enough and incompetent?

He's willing to serve overseas, give him a break. When people do honorable things even when they don't have to, that's certainly worthy of a modicum of respect.

How about a military haircut? Or is he exempt because he's a prince (oh how sweet)? I hope the Swedish Navy isn't as sloppy as the Dutch army!

@Vebdorome-Shooting bad people is never a waste of time. Good for Carl!

@Tanskalainen Sweden doesn't have a hair cut policy like, say, the US. His hair is within Swedish limits for military.
21:32 October 2, 2010 by Kalyissa
@ vaniah if I remember correctly Prince Harry had to be brought home because it was revealed I believe by the American press that he was in Afganistan and where exactly he was. Which caused a big security problem and could have caused more problems for his regiment. So they brought him home instead.

My compliments to the Prince. He has good judgement to feel responsible to his country. Every veteran around the world will share in his pride.

@ Tanskalainen. Not in the army I suppose? Ever trained with these guys?

There Marines Corps are training in Sweden too, as well as other

parts of there defence forces. Sloppy???

Suppose you are talking about there army, 70th or 80th! That`s 30-40 years ago.

My complements to prince Carl Philip. He is an example for Sweden,

not afraid and appears to be certainly not a salon officer.

Of course Carl Philip's rank is a ceremonial one.

In his familiy, he is the only man of his generation. Royals always fool the public.

It is embarrasing to see how other people in the army who make a normal carreer, are taken down in grace and respect by someone who was born as a prince giving way too high ranks in the army.
