Swedish papers praise Peace Prize winner Liu

Swedish newspapers praised the choice of Liu Xiaobo as this year's Nobel Peace Prize laureate, saying that as China's role in the world grows, it is important to continue to put oneself on the line to criticise the lack of freedom of expression.

The Swedish press seemed to be in universal agreement on its editorial pages that Liu was a worth candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"Finally!" wrote liberal-leaning Göteborgs-Posten on its editorial page as it expressed its pleasure over the choice of Liu as the Peace Prize laureate.

"A more worthy winner cannot be found. To draw the world's attention to China's repression is important because it is easy to be dazzled by shiny skyscrapers and big money promises from Beijing", fellow liberal-leaning Gefle Dagblad concurred.

"It was a good choice. It puts the focus on the world's largest dictatorship, China, and its lack of human rights," said Social Democratic-leaning Dala-Demokraten.

Moderate-leaning Västervik-Tidningen was pleased that the prize's status was restored after last year's "infection of Obamania."

Liberal-leaning Uppsala Nya Tidning agreed, writing, "Last year's award to Barack Obama was embarrassing," but it is now history.

"When freedom of speech becomes a reality in China, the whole world will change," the paper wrote.

Another liberal-leaning paper, Östgöta Correspondenten, expressed its approval of the winner, but glumly wrote, "Successful advocacy work requires that the object cares what others think. In China's case, it is unfortunately doubtful."

"The global financial crisis and China's growing economic and political power have if anything muffled criticism of the country," wrote independently liberal newspaper Sydsvenskan, which commended the Nobel Committee for disregarding China's threats.

Social Democratic-leaning Folkbladet noted soberly, "China is increasingly active in the world. It is learning that the world also has views on China."

Liberal-leaning Dagens Nyheter added, "The Norwegian Nobel Committee has shown the way: we must support the democracy movement in China."

Of course the Peace Prize raises hackles. Which policies most threaten War and Misery? Which people are most abused? Who is working to alleviate those threats?

The nuclear threat is huge, and anti-nuclear activist Mordechai Vanunu has drawn wide attention for his whistle-blowing activities. But his selection would greatly disturb imperialists & Zionists. It can also be debated that knowledge of Israeli nuclear operations reduces the deterrence effect of nuclear arsenals. Further, Vanunu himself reportedly (acc. to Haaretz) begs not to be considered for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Perhaps stimulating controversy is a form of successful choice? Most choices (certainly including Liu Xiaobo) will cause outrage & anger to some people. Will the committee awarding the Nobel Peace Prize speak for those whose voices can't be heard? We always hope so ...

shame on the prize, a politicalized and childish game. Nobel pease prize somewhat is a western standard game.

I would say that the rulers of the Nobel prize are placed in the middle east, not in the west.

last year i commented the choice of Obama, by these words

A New Nobel Prize Award

Did you hear or read the news about it?

Of course not, for it is not "The Norwegian Nobel Institute" that declared it, but we who invented it:

"Nobel Prize for Dreams fakers".

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who:

"...shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses!"

Because we all have dreams:

- There are those who have dreams and can see the "stars of the noon".

- There are those who dream and ignore the stars.

- The White African Tiger had and has a dream!

- Balram Halwai had a dream too…

5.999.999.999 have a dream and the rest may have nightmares, but no one of them was laureate the "Grand Prix"…

Last year (2009) The Norwegian Nobel Institute awarded no

peace makers

but

dreams' fakers!

Following are the quotes from CNN "Is Chian a developing country?"

October 12th, 2010 11:50 am ET

I have been to China 16 times and lived there for up to 100 days at a time. have also lived in the USA and visited there many times. ONLY in China am I safe to alk the streets at night without fear of getting mugged, shopt at or attacked.

Heck - in LA even my Hotel warned me NOT to walk 1000 meters down the street to buy pizza "Because you could get mugged"

The current Chinese government really is doing a great job and has lots of genuine and well-deserved respecton the ground.

Qwerty October 12th, 2010 12:24 pm ET

China is the arrogant, authoritarian, totalitarian country, and is also looking for the last imperialist Great Powers.

China is far from democratic country. Further more, China is the enemy of democracy.

From above, I see the westerners have a mixed and lost direction attitude towards China. Look and think before you talk about China.

I am neutral to all political sides of this story, however, what I cannot understand is how poor Mr. Liu Xiaobo is a winner of a peace prize? He is a West sympathizing dissident. As far as I know, Nobel intended the peace prize specifically for people who stop wars. Mr. Liu Xiaobo didn't do anything of this sort, never even tried. Well, Nobel peace prize for a long time has been used for some weird political purpose. Al Gore? Obama? Now, Liu Xiaobo? Are you guys serious? Give me a break!

Cheap political farce. I seriously doubt Nobel would have approved.
