Swedish man dies in live 'cyber suicide' broadcast

Published: 12 Oct 10 12:15 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/29566/20101012/

A Swedish man hanged himself during a live broadcast on the internet on Monday morning, a phenomenon that police described as rare in Sweden.

Similar incidents have occurred in other countries, but it is still a relatively unknown phenomenon in Sweden.

"I have never heard of such incidents in Sweden," Anders Ahlqvist of the National Investigation Department (Rikskriminalen) told newspaper Expressen on Tuesday.

Marcus Jannes, 21, posted on popular internet forum Flashback on Monday morning that he wanted to kill himself and sent pictures of the event every two seconds. Jannes' family members have asked to make his name public to stop the rumours and inaccuracies that they claimed were spread about him.

At 11.51am, Jannes started a new thread on the forum, writing that he had taken painkillers several minutes earlier and would broadcast his suicide live on a webcam. He also provided an FTP link with login information to access the photos of the event.

He wrote a second post at 1.02pm describing himself.

"I am a guy, 21 years old. I have a good life, studying at my own pace, have my own apartment, good income from the regional social insurance office (activity benefits + housing supplement).

Have Asperger syndrome / high-functioning autism.
Am overly vulnerable (emotionally)...
Have really poor social skills, which make me a somewhat lonely person.

Think that I have had a good upbringing despite a lot of difficulties at school.

[in English] Makes no sense [in Swedish] that I want to kill myself? No, I know [tongue smiley]"

Four minutes later, he posted again, saying that he feared that he was about to change his mind and wanted to speed things up. He provided the FTP link, including the username and password, then edited the post, saying he was waiting for more people to arrive, signing off with a laugh.

At 1.13pm, he wrote in English, "alright lets do it". In the video, Jannes is wearing a red Nike "Just do it" t-shirt.

In addition, Jannes posted his final thoughts on Facebook, wondering where he would end up and saying that he loved his family more than anything else, but that one cannot live for others.

His last words were, "I do not think my life is bad at all. It is actually really good. But sometimes it is simply too hard. I do not have the strength to write more now. Goodbye [open-mouth smiley]"

Police received tips from the public at 1.44pm and arrived at 2.05pm at his apartment in Järna southwest of Stockholm, but it was too late.

"Police performed CPR until the ambulance arrived, but his life could not be saved," Lotta Thyni, a spokeswoman for Södertälje police, told Expressen.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which is routine after every death.

"We can only regret that people who knew that he planned to kill himself did not act to save his life," said Thyni.

In March 2007, a 42-year-old father of two hanged himself live on the internet in Britain's first "cyber suicide," while a 19-year-old Florida college student killed himself online in November 2008, with his webcam still running 12 hours after he threatened to overdose on prescription drugs.

Awful news !

This is a predictable end for faithless elements, having nothing to live for.
13:17 October 12, 2010 by Marley420
Very sad ;(
13:27 October 12, 2010 by l33tshane
faithless elements, are you saying he killed himself as he wasn't religious? you damn religious types turn anything into an excuse to preach.

very sad story about the poor lad.
13:41 October 12, 2010 by Rishonim
Poor kid. .....
13:49 October 12, 2010 by futureishere
And why exactly are we sympathizing with this guy? We should save our sympathy for his near and dear ones, not this cruel kid who did not want to "live for others"!
14:08 October 12, 2010 by lurker
@futureishere

We do not need to save our sympathies. Sympathy is not a finite resource.

Everyone involved in this awful, awful incident is deserving of our compassion, including the poor, disturbed soul who felt it necessary to do this to himself. Poor guy, what a waste.
14:20 October 12, 2010 by asian123
Marko2010S

allah(the only god)may give him peace.

next he should be born in afghanistan to have good faith.
14:51 October 12, 2010 by futureishere
@lurker: The 'poor, disturbed soul' decided to kill himself because life is hard. Whose isn't? Cruel as it may sound, he doesn't deserve our sympathy.
15:03 October 12, 2010 by Already in use
It was his own decision. If he didn't want to live, I think it should be respected. It's of course sad for friends and relatives, but it seems like he was suffering. So what do you judge him, you don't know his pain.

@133tshane

well said! very well said.
15:28 October 12, 2010 by heu
That was a very selfish action in my opinion.

"faithless elements, having nothing to live for."

All you have to live for is your faith? Now THAT is a sad life.
15:42 October 12, 2010 by J Jack
Those ip address holders that can be proven to have logged in to the suicide pictures or cam but not immediately informing the police will hopefully be severely punished with jail time for assisting in the victim's demise.
16:12 October 12, 2010 by europeman31
First Very sad news . In the western society which is based on Atheistic priniciple and only has self neither ego nor superego (like Frued) said result like these.

you are right , when you donot have faith , does not know why you are here ? what is your purpose ? you get bored, tired and fedup with your life ..

Life without Faith , end up like these...
16:26 October 12, 2010 by Marko2010S
Let's see what the idiotic-morons and hypocrites have commented:

@heu @asian123 @l33tshane @"green Swede"

All of you sound like brain injury victims (Hopefully, you will not do as this young man did!). Anyways, Listen and listen well you bloody-goons (For your sake!), "Faith" doesn't only mean religion (Unless you are a narrow minded doltish to take it as only religion).

Faith is related to family, love, dreams, hobbies...etc

Yes I am a Muslim (Alhamdulillah), and my religion my great religion (Islam) prohibits commiting sucide, but still even without Islam, I have zillion reasons to live for, such as: living for my sweetheart daughter, living to accomplish my dreams,......and of course, living to uplift the society by educating muppets like you.

Once again, Islam teaches how the person appreciates the life that s/he is given, and teaches about how to perfectly spend your life.

@J Jack #12

I noted that you've used word "victim" .... Huh? Are you sure about that?

If the killer is the victim, then, YEAH I now Understand how come the West sympathizes and supports the satanic state "Israel" for being victims by killing and burning poor children.
16:28 October 12, 2010 by Åskar
@europeman31

May I just draw your attention to what l33tshane wrote earlier in this thread.
16:58 October 12, 2010 by crofab
What a tragic event. It's a shame he was in so much pain to want to do this, but he was obviously very determined and he made his choice. It will certainly be a tough time for his family.

But for all you preachers out there, how can you possibly judge him and say he is selfish? Or criticize him for what you assume is a lack of religion? Don't forget that the guy had Asperger's! So come down off your high horses already and stop pretending like you know all the answers to the universe or have any understanding of the kind of things he was going through. We may be disturbed by such a decision, and from our vantage point perhaps rightfully so, but part of being human is the ability to choose your own destiny, and that is exactly what he did. I think that has to be respected at some level.
17:12 October 12, 2010 by RobinHood
The preachers seeking to capitalise on this story do religion no favour; any religion. Your posts are repulsive, and I hope they reflect only the baser elements of your own religions, and your own dark souls.
17:32 October 12, 2010 by Goodwill81
@ Marko2010

You couldn't get along without mentioning "satanic state of Israel", could you?

Poor soul...
17:36 October 12, 2010 by europeman31
Several other Aspergers disease patient are there . What push one to do suicide is to failure to identify the purpose (Syftet in Swedish) of life. Psycologically when a person does not have higher standards he stretched to do suicide.

please note i am not blaming this poor guy, i am blaming the whole society and atheistic ideology for this which gave us fruits like these ..

hope your eyes will open, before they close forever, and you will be answerable for your deeds ...
18:25 October 12, 2010 by asian123
@Marko2010S

my religion my great religion (Islam) prohibits commiting sucide, but still even without Islam.

you are true islam prohibits suicides. but encourages suicide bombers.

in the religion of peace i never find any peace.

Only a dingleberry would make this tragic story about furthering Islam.

R.I.P marcus..

This is exactly how life can end up in a situation where one doesn't belong to or enjoy the social sarrounding.unfortunately life in sweden makes it even harder for people like marcus. it's not a matter of having something to live for i.e daughter or dreams to accomplish but rather how the person(alone) is feeling with relation to his social lifestyle, being able to handle day to day challenges or not.

If he did the right thing or not is impossible to say since am not in his shoes. besides nobody has any idea of how his childhood and upbringing was like and that's why i prefer keeping some opinions to my self

other than that i think i might save some lives by expanding my social circle, offer a smile or say hello to strangers:)

At least he died alone....

Only god can judge you Marcus
21:56 October 12, 2010 by fridayz
I cannot understand why every piece of news here must be commented on based on either religion or immigration!

A sad lonely child suffering from Autism has ended his life ... stop f..ng judging him...
22:17 October 12, 2010 by billyb362
A six point reflection on atheism:

There is no God

Objective Truth does not exist

Life has no meaning and no purpose

Everything you experience is a deceitful illusion

Every thought you ponder is irreconcilable nothingness

There is no such thing as immortality

If all the above are true for you, there can be no rational, justifiable reason to sustain such a brutally meaningless existence - to willfully continue living such a life of well-defined pessimism is the ultimate hypocrisy

- All 6 points outlined above necessitate the irrefutable, philosophical outcome of atheism

Dear Sweden,

You are really really good at appearing 'duktig' by performing all your autism research. You really really suck at not diagnosing early and having help and assistance available to young as well as old diagnosed with high functioning autism.

Shame on you Sweden.
23:38 October 12, 2010 by wxman
A sick and despicable misuse of freedom of expression.

@fridayz

Well said!

Stop acting like vultures in the name of your religious and political convictions...
01:02 October 13, 2010 by Swedesmith
I don't think that there is one of us who is fit to judge this man.
03:46 October 13, 2010 by futureishere
@Swedesmith: You are right. We shouldn't get all judgmental without knowing all the facts (or may be even after knowing all the facts). But would you have made the same statement if he had taken someone else's life instead of his own? Personally, I consider suicide as a crime against humanity. And that's not because of any religious BS. But for the same reason as murder. We, as a society, take great pains in investing in a human life and no one has the right to end it. Even if it's your own.
08:22 October 13, 2010 by crofab
@futureishere - Attempting to put suicide and murder on the same level is idiiotic. Whether you like it or not, everyone has the right to end their own life. We may not have been brought into this world by our own choice, but we can sure as hell leave it on our own terms if we choose to do so.
09:15 October 13, 2010 by karex
Many of you people are missing the fact that the boy suffered from Asperger's. Sure life is hard for everyone, but most people have coping mechanisms, people with Asperger's don't. It is doubly or triply hard for them to cope. They feel isolated and outside society, and that no one really understands them, they also don't understand other people very well because they have difficulty reading body language, interpreting cynicism, etc. In short, they have a hard time managing their emotional side.

I don't condone taking one's own life, but to call the boy selfish because he caused suffering to his family is being narrow-minded in the extreme.

Please research about Asperger's, then try to put yourselves in the same shoes before judging his actions. It's a tragedy.
11:07 October 13, 2010 by Sam1
He says he has no social skills...too bad he should have travelled to other countries maybe he meets some people who dont behave like robots and machiens...

Poor guy sounded to have lots of people skills..but since this country has useless fear of the unkown such occasion happen, people just are afraid to make friends..

there is TOOOOO much a sense of what is ettiquet and what is wrong and right or lets say kul eller not kul..Non of those idiots who knew he will commit suicide informed the police...by standers apathy..Very sad a young boy died this way..

and hospitals are very good at labeling people with Autism and God knows what else they have to label people.. how about those immigrants who lived under war pain abuse, torture and suffering why do they love life and overcome those labels you think they didnt suffer psychological pain..they did but they learned to cope with it...

SWEDISH PEOPLE SHOULD LEARN HOW TO KEEP FRIENDS..and make new ones...

Im surprised if a women complains to Fkassan that her son is eating at her home :-) what you expect a friend inviting his friend over a coffee HAHAHA what a world
15:16 October 13, 2010 by PoJo
Poor kid, he must have been feeling so lonely and depressed to arrive to such a decision. It feels so sad to hear such news.

May his soul rest in peace and may his beloved overcome this tragedy!
15:40 October 13, 2010 by Swedesmith
@futureishere

I don't view suicide as a crime, I see it as a mistake. A mistake you can never undo.
16:51 October 13, 2010 by trackmeifyoucan
well, the problem here is about cyberspace. people take it for granted and feel like they can just say and do whatever they can. if we reflect the same behavior from real life to the cyberspace such things won't be taken for granted and probably this guy could have gotten the help he needed.
19:03 October 13, 2010 by richbebo
holy crap, i'm 21 and i also have asbergers, this is pretty close to home
13:12 October 15, 2010 by eovti
It is the right of every man to live and die as he seem fit, and should he choose to die, it is the responsibility of society and those around him to try to convince him otherwise.

Since he chose to broadcast this on the internet, I think it was a call for help. Maybe deep inside he wanted someone to call the emergency number.

But alas, no one did. Instead they just sat there watching this ultimate reality show!

If I were to _really_ kill myself, I would hide my plans and not tell anyone.
13:31 October 15, 2010 by BobYourUncle
I have read a little more about this and that he was diagnosed with "aspergers syndrom" and if anything this is pretty sad. Earlier on I commented without reading the full story.
13:45 October 15, 2010 by emenemz
I believe that this sad story has absolutely nothing to do with faith or lack thereof. The kid is not to blame for the act he commited, I agree with "eovti" that broadcasting it may have been a call for help. Let's not forget he suffered from autism, he doesn't feel or understand things like most of us do. Unfortunately for him, he was smart enough to realize that he was incapable of basic human interactions. He could not "put himself in other people's shoes" but those of us who are not autist have this capability of -at least- trying to understand what he went through and what drove him to commit suicide.

We cannot undo what he did, but the best thing we can actually do is to learn a lesson from this story and do our best so it would never happen again.
14:58 October 15, 2010 by Xxsarahxx
My brother commited suicide when he was 14 and I was 13.

I think you should all keep your negative opinions to yourself and only bring kind words and thoughts about this young man. His mother or brother or aunt or uncle or cousin or friend maybe reading your cruel words.......
15:24 October 15, 2010 by Mr.keeper
Terrible story... depressed now, I am trying to figure out why he did it.

Facts: he was not stupid , he knew his problem (poor social skills) he could be successful person and had a sweet life , he liked his family not a misanthropist, he never mentioned anything about being faithless or not believing in anything or being nihilist.

It is disgusting to see populace comment without any responsibility and without even seeing the facts trying to paint the word in the color they want... But be realistic, based on the facts, I can say He needed support and help from the society as Emenemz pointed out. Maybe with a short treatment by a psychologist he could live..

But why I am so depressed... besides this loss, I guess those who watch his death and probably enjoy it to the last moment... those are the ones to blame and I hope they never enjoy their lives afterwords as they are the main murderers...
15:30 October 15, 2010 by Mr.keeper
Foolish statements as everyman has to choose to live or to die is ridiculous... stop it!! It can only be applied to mentally healthy people . and these people, never trade their lives for nothing but for the things they believe and have faith on it... like country or what so ever... not to entertain people via internet...
15:41 October 15, 2010 by Daniel JD
I totally agree w/ karex, post # 32 and Xxsarahxx, post # 41

I think we should just state our condolenses to the family of this poor guy...

Let's ALL simply refrain from passing judments on the victim, yes, I think he was a victim.
17:24 October 15, 2010 by emenemz
I hope this article helps those of you who don't understand what this poor man was going through:

"[..] most young adults with Asperger Syndrome remain at home, although some do marry and work independently. The "different-ness" adolescents experience can be traumatic. Anxiety may stem from preoccupation over possible violations of routines and rituals, from being placed in a situation without a clear schedule or expectations, or from concern with failing in social encounters; the resulting stress may manifest as inattention, withdrawal, reliance on obsessions, hyperactivity, or aggressive or oppositional behavior. Depression is often the result of chronic frustration from repeated failure to engage others socially, and mood disorders requiring treatment may develop. Clinical experience suggests the rate of suicide may be higher among those with AS [..]"

This proves that he most likely didn't even realize what broadcasting his suicide meant to the rest of the world, I agree with "Mr. Keeper" that those to blame are the viewers and the readers of his blog, as a matter of fact, anyone who knew about his repeatedly stated intentions. I really think the police should investigate the IP adresses and if it is not possible to punish them by law at least make their names public so everyone would know what despicable persons they are.
10:24 October 16, 2010 by Lara
First, i want to offer my condolences to the young man's family. I can only imagine the pain this has caused your family. May you find the strength to get through this ordeal and heal inside out from this pain.

Secondly, i want to support the motion that this young man was a victim - a victim of this large society called 'Sweden'; a victim of the monster called the 'internet'. For God's sake what will it cost to pick your phone and dial 112 before things got out of hand? What is so interesting about watching a young potentially sucessful young man take his own life? What is wrong with this society?

I have lived in Sweden for almost 4 years now and i have tried everything to make friends. Its plain impossible! They are too scared of their own shadow! I'm still trying and they run through my hands like water! I come from a very sunny country and most people are as happy as puppies playing in the garden on a sunny day.

Advice:

1. Travel out of Sweden as often as you can. Sunny countries should be your destination. Experience life outside this 'robotic' society.

2. Make friends!!! Smile to people! Say 'hej hej' to strangers! (you could save a life!)

3. Talk about your problems to professionals/family/trusted friend. A problem shared is half-solved.

4. Good nutrition keeps your body and soul together. Stop dieting. You look good already. You'll only get krankier by the day. Grap a bar of dark chocolate once in a while and eat it s-l-o-w-l-y! Enjoy the good things life has to offer.

I want to be a friend to somebody out there. It doesn't matter who you are. Whatever sickness you have is only physical. Hold on tight to life. There is so much to live for!! Please!!

Life is BEAUTIFUL.
16:46 October 16, 2010 by shramdrows
Such a very sad story. He was desperate for attention to the extent that even his death had to be public. It's importat to keep your watch out for these situations.
08:09 October 18, 2010 by peacefultrees
yes, life is beautiful... i agree. sometimes, life is difficult, but there are so many good things about being alive. i am sad that this young person took his life, because it does get better. i would never judge him, because it was his life to take. it was his right. each person has to make decisions like that for him/herself. however, i wish those who knew about what was happening would have done something to help him. it is true that those who really do not want to die will tell others what they plan to do. this is truly a call for help by the person who intends to kill him/herself. and, it is also true that a friend might have made a difference in this young man's life. i agree with you, lara, that is is good to be kind to strangers and smile, say hi hi... that is the best! really, we are all one and connected...

´There is entire video at truecrimereport about his suicide in which he was obviously incited by society. I am sorry for his suffering before he managed to please society with his departure. Sweden is extremely sick these days...google search for OBAMA = STALIN= BUSH — SOVIET UNION = UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
13:15 October 27, 2011 by Eric S
Reason for the suicide is, as an aspie, he felt life is not in his favor .

To the neurological or normal person, life is a breeze. They always look forward for their happiness, boy/girlfriend, whatever they aim to do, they most probably can achieve.

But for the aspie, life is not so rosy. They feel so secluded, so isolated, and certain things they aim to do, they feel they may not be able to achieve (even if their education is very good). Because, aspie's abilities and thoughts are just so different from the norm.

He may feel that it's useless to try anymore to socialize which he had tried and failed. Yes, he has taken his life too early, too soon, but he maybe feeling, well, life will never give him full meaning of happiness and pleasure which almost everyone finds so easy to achieve.

Reason I talk this way is because I'm an aspie too, so it may be most possible this are his reasons too.
