Christian Democrats mull name change

The Christian Democrats are contemplating changing the name of the party to the "Family Party Christian Democrats" in a bid to halt a slide in popular support, reported the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) daily.

Party leader Göran Hägglund is reported to be lukewarm to the idea, which was discussed at the most recent meeting of the party executive.

The Christian Democrats have declined from an 11.7 percent high in the 1998 general election to 5.6 percent in September 2010, which renders it the smallest parliamentary party, together with the Left Party.

The party faithful and hierarchy are busy analysing the dire election result and one of the suggestions that has emerged, is the possibility of a name change to rebrand the party.

Aside from the "family party", other alternatives under consideration include the "freedom party" as additions to the current name, pointing out that other parties - such as the Liberals and the Social Democrats - have extended names.

Some members of the executive are in favour of doing away with the name Christian Democrats altogether in order to try to broaden the party's appeal, the newspaper reported.

The party's youth wing chair, Charlie Weimers, confirmed to SvD that the executive had discussed the issue at a recent meeting.

Party leader Göran Hägglund is reported to be less enthusiastic about the move, but welcomes the discussion and is prepared to consider all alternatives to arrest the slide.

Good news

The marketing genius indeed...

A great idea! The Christian Democrats are indeed a family party. No one has talked about FAMILY as much as the godfather of the party, Alf Svensson who during all his time in parliament struck me as being the most outstanding on family issues and the importance of family (in a very pastoral kind of way, playing the role of everybody’s father Christmas, everybody’s grandfather and the moral director on the compass of all families…..sometimes moralising but

not pontificating……

http://www.google.com/search?q=Alf+Svensson

The family is a good political support base. (In the UK there are numerical estimates made in advance of the promises as to how many single mothers this or that policy could be aimed at / promised - to win their votes. On the platform of the new party name, and under the auspices of the “"Family Party Christian Democrats", Göran Hägglund can promise a lot, promise what families want to hear – “make promises by the hour”….

Hopefully, the new party name will reflect the ( humane) heart of their family policy - demographically speaking they stand to win the confidence of more than a million family voters.

About old party leaders it’s Alf Svensson for the Christian Democrats and on the right hand side Bengt Westerberg of Folkpartiet.

Another long story:

Ah yes, it is the name of the party that is causing the support to dwindle. It couldn't possibly be your party's values. Rebrand yourself and the supporters will return in droves.

Proof positive that this is a party by and for utter fools.

Oh yes, I see now...if you change your name to have "family" in it then of course everyone who is in a family will feel compelled to vote for you. The logic is outstanding...what could possibly go wrong. :)

I don't think the problem is the name - the main issue seems to be the party's complete anonymity since their joined the government coalition
00:49 October 18, 2010 by fikatid
They can change it to "People's Party" or eventually.....becomes the Communist's Party. It's all propaganda. Religion is the source of all evil.

Religion is not the source of all evil, just most of it :)
