Swedish forces present report on Afghanistan

The supreme commander of the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten) stressed the importance of the troops' work in Afghanistan to parliamentary defence and foreign affairs committees on Tuesday as the country mourned the loss of a soldier this weekend.

Separately, the conditions of two soldiers who were seriously wounded during combat in Afghanistan on Monday remain stable. According to the Armed Forces, the soldiers were hit by shrapnel from so-called RPGs, or rocket-propelled grenades.

"The situation is trying for our unit, but they are also doing a great job," Supreme Commander Sverker Göranson said when he arrived at the meeting with the Riksdag's defence and foreign affairs committees to provide information on his views on the situation in Afghanistan.

"Both the civilian and military factions are convinced that what we are doing, we are doing properly and we are coming across more and more people who have confidence in us," he added.

The news of the two soldiers injured on Monday comes as a new Aftonbladet poll conducted by Sifo reveals that nearly half of the Swedish population believes that the government should bring the country's troops in Afghanistan home.

One of the injured soldiers, a 26-year-old man from the Gothenburg area, has very serious injuries, but they are thought to be life-threatening, according to Armed Forces spokesperson Mattias Robertson.

The other injured soldier, a 29-year-old man from Medelpad in central Sweden, also has serious injuries.

"The soldiers' work will continue as usual and they will carry on with their activities and operations," said Robertson.

A brief ceremony for slain Swedish soldier Kenneth Wallin was conducted at the Swedish base in Afghanistan's Mazar-i-Sharif on Tuesday morning before his coffin was transferred to the airport outside Camp Marmal for further transport to Sweden.

Wallin was killed on Saturday.

Defence committee chairman Håkan Juholt, a Social Democrat, stressed the importance of a broad political agreement on the Swedish military effort in Afghanistan.

"My conviction is that because it is so serious, we need broad political support," he said.

Juholt hopes that the government will present a bill that is designed so that all political parties will support it.

"It is deserving of Sweden's reputation in the world, the soldiers who are there, their relatives, and the Swedish people," he said.

However, Juholt refused to comment on a timetable for a troop withdrawal.

At a press briefing in the morning, Left Party leader Lars Ohly said that he would be willing to drop demands for the withdrawal of Swedish troops starting in 2011 and ending in 2013.

He said that if the government is prepared to discuss a cut-off date, he is willing to listen.

Separately, 47 percent answered yes to Aftonbladet's poll conducted by Sifo asking 1,000 people over 15 whether Sweden should bring its troops in Afghanistan home.

Thirty-six percent said they should remain.

More women than men and more younger than older people believe that the troops should return home, according to the survey.

In July, 42 percent responded that they felt that Sweden should keep its combat forces in Afghanistan.

Ohly, what a joke of the century he is. all talk and no action. just to justify his salary from the parliament. as a true communist he should surrender his earnings to better causes and also recognize the fact that communism has killed more people than anyone in history

Sweden's govt should have a proper discussion on their troops being in Afghanistan and explain it to the people. I mean it's obvious greater opposition will rise if a soldier is wounded or KIA and it is plastered all over the front of the papers. But what needs to be covered more extensively is how Sweden is contributing to the locals than just in combat. People should be well aware of every angle of the mission.
15:46 October 19, 2010 by xguild
hmm actually religion holds that honor, but communism is a close second given its staggering capacity to starve people.

The question anyone for the war should ask is why are we there? What is the goal? and what is the expected outcome if the goal is successful?

At least for Sweden in my humble opinion their is no logical reason to be their. They are supporting a war that was started by the US when in the late 90's when they supported Isreals bombing of Lebanon. That is was prompted Osama Bin Laden to crash plains into the Twin Towers and consequently triggered a Taliban head hunt in Afghanistan. Suffice to say, Sweden played no part in any of these events, so why are they their?

It could be argued that they are supporting their allies, but frankly as an American, while the help is appriciated in any regard, it's a war that is very unamerican and has little support in the US who's polls on the war are no different then in Sweden. The Americans want out fo the war, Swedes want out of the war....... why are we still there?

Why is anyone there? I can only think of a couple of reasons. Money and power (or both, since you can't have one without the other). As far as anyone knows at this time, Osama bin Ladin is in Pakistan and probably being protected by Pakistan. So there must be some money to be made in Afghanistan. Armaments manufacturers of course are earning money from this. And then there's the illegal drug problem; lots of poppies there I understand. Another very good possibility is that this is being used to distract people from the ultimate goal of the world's big business interests; the ultimate creation of a one-world political and economic union. Which will eventually lead to the enslavement of most of the world's population. Believe me, if this should happen, you don't want to be here.

@xguild.

during the crusades which lasted for about 200 years 1.5 million were killed. this is the biggest proportional religious conflict per capita (300 odd mill) communism has killed far more, but less per capita. Communism has killed about 100 million very very innocent people and that's a fact dating the last 100 years, not 1000 years ago.

THE US is there due to 9/11. NATO is there due to the alliance stipulation stating "an attack on 1 is an attack on all". Sweden is there as it's an ally of NATO, although not a member. Which basically means they're volunteering their services and it's very respectful of them to aid on the mission.

You ask why are we still there?Well we knocked the Taliban out of power and were charged to help the nation get back on its feet. Construction, Education...etc. That's the mission. The insurgents however have us in a bind so we can't build if we're fighting.

should we just leave after everything? Let the Taliban take control again?
17:27 October 19, 2010 by jackx123
@xguild if you claim to be an american do your spelling homework and whilst you're at it also brush up on history. US did not start the afghan conflict. russia did. moreover there is something called the UN which most honorable countries are members of, supports and thereby complies with its resolutions. historically sweden is the largest donor to the 3rd world per capita and accepts far more immigrants per capita than any other nation excluding refugees in bordering countries of their origin. I suggest you use Google to gain information

Sweden is there because ISAF is a UN mission, and swedes are eager to maintain their good UN status. And also not to look weak among the Nordic neighbors.

@Kevtravels#8....wrote "..... to help the nation get back on its feet. Construction, Education...etc. That's the mission"

You meant... the way you helped Iraq to get back on its feet.
19:17 October 19, 2010 by Kevtravels
@Strongbow, Great point.

@asian369, Different nations, different reasons. Iraq is a different case but still security/reconstruction. If the US had left in the wake of Iraq, there would have been a mass vaccuum and millions would have died, same case in Afghanistan. Whether you like it or not, the troops have to remain until either a political reconciliation between the govt/insurgents or the security forces are ready to fight and that could be a decade or more.

"More women than men and more younger than older people believe that the troops should return home, according to the survey"

this just shows that more young Swedish Men are sissys...

I read once that Swedish men cant talk to a woman inless he is drinking or drunk.. is this true?..i know it is off topic but i never thought to ask in till now

@asia I am pretty sure this article is about Afghinastan not Iraq..also not sure if you know this but America is still in Iraq.. you think it takes 30 days to rebuild a country..hell all that was there was sand and a few trees anyway @ Kevtravels the troops have to remain until either a political reconciliation between the govt/insurgents or the security forces are ready to fight well the first will never happen as we all know and the second... for decades the Iraq army has had a strong hold on Iraq.. there is NO reason the US should teach the Iraqi police/ (giggle) Army modern warfare..none at all surely you cant think that one man (saddam) had THAT much brain power to control the country they are just learning 21st ways of fighting.. and that will come back to haunt the US as did Iran I say pull everyone out and them them kill their selves.. if the dont want to play nice with the US or any other friendly country like Sweden then just drop the bomb on them it is simple... if a bunch of Taliban ( which is equivalent to rednecks and hillbillies in America) can take over that country of dirt then the Iraq police force should have been able to do the same.. and if im not mistaken ( and im not) the Taliban hasn't taken over Iraq..and for decades the Iraq army has had a strong hold on Iraq.. there is NO reason the US should teach the Iraqi police/ (giggle) Army modern warfare..none at all remember Iran? see how that turned out for America.. now they have a psycho leader that has nuclear capabilities...pull out now and let them fight for themselves...period George Bush was just trying to prove a point to his daddy... point proven time to come home I say pull everyone out and them them kill their selves.. if the dont want to play nice with the US or any other friendly country like Sweden then just drop the bomb on them it is simple... if a bunch of Taliban ( which is equivalent to rednecks and hillbillies in America) can take over that country of dirt then the Iraq police force should have been able to do the same.. and if im not mistaken ( and im not) the Taliban hasn't taken over Iraq remember Iran? see how that turned out for America.. now they have a psycho leader that has nuclear capabilities...pull out now and let them fight for themselves...period George Bush was just trying to prove a point to his daddy... point proven time to come home

@Tdye, Taliban equivalent of rednecks/hillbillies in the USA? Read up on them. They are well trained fighters, many of whom survived the fighting against the Soviets 25years ago. They're not some fools on mopeds with RPG's. If they had just been, they'd been killed by now. That being said reconciliation with the less extreme groups is certaintly possible with time. The Taliban know foreign troops can't stay forever, but do the Taliban and other insurgent groups have the numbers to exhaust for that wait? I doubt it.

I hope Swedes realize the sacrifices their servicemen and women have done and given for their country. The coalition will not forget them. The Swedes should not let this tragedy stop them from engaging with the enemy and patrolling in enemy territory. They need to patrol and expand their influence and show the local people how they mean a sense of calm and stable life rather than chaotic destruction that insurgents are bringing. If Sweden is really prepared to stay and fight, they need to send more troops or SOF to aid them.
06:49 October 20, 2010 by Tdye
i have read up on them and they are rednecks and hillbillies..they have primitive weapons and primitive means of warfare.. the ONLY reason they are doing what they are is because like a hillbilly they know their land..better than Americans do

they are well trained by the Soviets im not shocked that they beat them same thing is going on over there now.. Americans are teaching them every thing they know so one day they will comeback and use that same training on US

"That being said reconciliation with the less extreme groups is certaintly possible with time. The Taliban know foreign troops can't stay forever, but do the Taliban and other insurgent groups have the numbers to exhaust for that wait? I doubt it."

again I think you are mistaken..the Taliban wants NOTHING more than to rule the Muslim world..and make to kill all non Islam nations..you must have forgotten one small detail with the sleeper cells in America and other parts of the world.. Osama laid in wait quietly for several years before 9/11,Yemen Africa and other bombings..they have nothing but time on their hands..the United Sates and Sweden and every other country needs to pull out now and let them hash their own problems out...they have been fighting their war for 2500 years.. NOTHING the US,NATO,UN, or any thing else is, can, and will be able to stop those people.. we need to just watch our boarders, tighten immigration and be done with the whole mess.. you strike me as the kind of American that thinks war is peace..i am willing to bet you are a republican?
06:55 October 20, 2010 by Tdye
oops sorry for the typos i meant to say

"and to kill all non Islam nations"

and

"they have been fighting their war for 1500 years"

There 's much talk about Afghanistan being the USA's new Vietnam. Sweden did not send any troops to help Uncle Sam then – on the contrary, Prime Minister Olof Palme was himself at least leading one demonstration against the war, walking arm in arm with North Vietnam's ambassador to Moscow, here in Stockholm. I myself preferred to not shake hands with US's ambassador to Stockholm, Soul Brother Jerome Holland, when I was introduced to him.at the Grand Hotel in 1972, because of Damn Nam. Would I shake hands with today's ambassador? Certainly, whilst praying for peace. With honour.

http://www.google.se/search?hl=en&clie...q=&gs_rfai=

Today, it's difficult to imagine Carl Bildt (Heaven forbid) or our Fredrik the Greatest Moderate or even the Liberal's General Björklund the deputy prime minister leading an anti-American war demonstration. This is partly due to the visible line of demarcation drawn by baby Bush : “ Either you are with us ( US) or you are with the terrorists”.

http://www.google.se/search?hl=en&clie...q=&gs_rfai=

The Vietnam War is very different from the War in Afghanistan, as different as the Vietcong are different from the Taliban.

Afghanistan ruined the USSR ( plus that Germany paid cash for East Germany)

Today, the Russian Federation must be looking on with a wry smile or with some sympathy for

those

“That can do what’s never been done

That can win what’s never been won “

Brother Obama was awarded the Noble Prize for Peace (and so were Henry A. Kissinger and Le Duc Tho.)

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/

Sweden , with less than 600 militarists in Afghanistan, is playing a very small subsidiary role, but the death of a single Swedish soldier there, is one death too many...

Now, here's the good news, the best way forward in Afghanistan, consonant with Psalm 34:14 :seek peace, and pursue it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/20/world/as...0afghan.html?hp

If this eventually succeeds then Brother Obama should be awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, for a second time.

Is there anybody who would grudge him that?
