Swedish weather agency issues snow warning

Published: 19 Oct 10 17:36 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/29706/20101019/

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) warned Swedes to brace for snow and heavy winds across much of the country on Tuesday evening and Wednesday.

The class 1 snow warning applies from Blekinge in the southeast and extends northward across the almost the entire country.

In addition, the agency issued a class 1 gale warning for the entire Swedish coastline, save for a small sliver of the country's southernmost coast.

SMHI estimates that the central and eastern parts of Svealand in the middle of the country may receive up to 5 cm of wet snow on Wednesday.

Many parts of eastern Götaland in the south may also receive similar amounts of wet snow.

From Gävleborg on the east coast inland and northwards, snowfall is expected as early as Tuesday evening, with 5 cm of newly fallen snow expected overnight.

"A low-pressure area has moved over Sweden, resulting in unstable weather with rain and showers falling over the country's southern half," SMHI meteorologist Anders Wettergren said in a statement.

"Another precipitation area with snowfall will come in over the mountains and pass eastward over Norrland in the evening and overnight."

Northwesterly winds will also bring cooler air. The cold air on Wednesday will affect the weather as it blows towards southern Sweden and the expected rain may turn into wet snow in many places.

On Thursday, Sweden will be surrounded by a number of small rotating low-pressure systems. The northernmost low-pressure system will dump snow in the far north of the country, while the southernmost system will result in rain in southern Götaland before turning into a touch of snow in the evening.

The rest of the country will benefit from a sunny day, but it will turn cold, with temperatures below freezing in the north and in the single digits in the south.

The end of this week will continue with several small low-pressure fronts passing through the country with rain and snow, followed by lots of sun.

Temperatures are expected to once again fall below freezing throughout the country at night, dipping as low as minus 15 to 20 degrees Celsius in the far north.

Thermometers in the south of the country are expected to read 2 to 5 degrees in the south during the day, with temperatures remaining below freezing in the north.

At the start of next week, a major low-pressure system will move in over Sweden.

Man, 2 inches is nothing where I'm from. That would be along the shore of Lake Michigan in Michigan. 2 inches is normal. lol

Dear Editors,

Even 'Google translate' manages to translate 'SNÖBLANDAT REGN' into sleet, not 'wet snow'. I was about to ask "Who one earth wrote this article", but now I see it is Vivian Tse. So directly to Vivian; Sleet not wet snow. I know I'm being petty, but the english language has a lovely word for precipitated water close to the triple point and that single word is sleet, rather like the Danish word 'slud'.

So ends my pickyness.

Bringer, it is sunny and 60 right now and for the next 10 days in lake michigan. I think this is more of a warning to be prepared, it is still only october and im sure many people havent switched over to the snow tires yet. The warning im sure goes more to the ice effect rather than the 2 inches of snow.

@ richardbw: I see they removed my comment right at the top, because I criticised the crappy writing and the bad grammar of the article. They just can't take criticism-nor, it appears, improve their standards, because the grammar is still there.

Here's hoping they don't do the same with your comment!

@richardbw, sleet is created by rain falling and then freezing slightly (unless you are British then it is a combination of snow and ice). Wet snow is snow that is, well, wet as opposed to the dry snow that falls and then is blown all over the place by wind. I am sure there is a difference between a snow advisory and an ice advisory. Had they meant sleet, it would have been an ice advisory.
11:39 October 20, 2010 by eppie
Please don't use inches and fahrenheit.

And please tell your fellow country men.....it is time you put nationalism aside and start using logical units.

And indeed wet snow, is normal snow that falls when temperatures are above 0.
13:16 October 20, 2010 by Zoolander428
Since we can't use inches or °F...

Even in Michigan, getting 5.285e-18 light years of snow around now would be a bit unusual, depending on where you're at in the state. Having lived along Lake MI, and in the U.P. - it definitely makes a difference where in the state/country you are, just like in Sweden.
16:27 October 20, 2010 by mojofat
So is it going to snow, sleet, rain, or shine in Göteborg? For a simple weather alert, this seems to have caused an awful lot of confusion.

ROFL, Zoolander.
18:08 October 20, 2010 by LordSqueak
"snöblandat regn" is mostly refering to the state of the snow and rain as it falls down, because it can't make up its mind if it should be rain or snow, and tries to be both at the same time. Literaly it means "snow mixed rain".

Once on the ground we call it , "slask", that grey slush we all know and love,, to hate. =)
21:14 October 20, 2010 by richardbw
Sleet is a rain and snow mixture (hence why I refereed to it being water just above or at the triple point). To help those who wish to classify precipitation correctly I refer you to the METAR precipitation code where sleet is referred to as RASN (guess what that stands for ;-) )

@immigrant-girl Sleet should not be confused with freezing rain, which is super-cooled liquid water below the triple point. If there is freezing rain then you are correct there would be an ice warning. However, this is sleet and above the triple point so no freezing on contact. It just turns to slush or as the Swedes say 'slask' (LordSqueak et al.)

Wet snow is just an extra long word for sleet, they are one and the same. Sleet is just a bit more simple to say, like saying ice instead of frozen water, snow instead of crystalline frozen water, or steam instead of gaseous water.

BTW; Yes I am British (English in fact) and I don't know if the word sleet is used in other colloquial forms of english in the same way, so if there is a cultural difference I apologise.
23:33 October 20, 2010 by Tdye
actually inches and Fahrenheit are logical units , because you don't understand it there is no need in making fun of it

it makes you look/sound arrogant and some how you are better than the ones that choose not to use the metric system..we do use the metric system.. in auto shop when foreign cars need repairs we have SAE and MERTIC..so maybe we know more than you if we can comprehend different forms of measurement..oh and 0c degrees = 32f degrees..just sayin

now that i think about it.. i have seen people griping about Sweden losing their language and becoming more americanized...so it is ok to keep your language yet use a system of mesurment that 99% of the world uses? maybe you all should speak the same language as well?
23:41 October 20, 2010 by Tdye
hahaha that is great! 5.285e-18 light years of snow hahaha
08:32 October 21, 2010 by richardbw
Measurements are measurements, as long as you understand the unit then you are fine. I personally prefer metric because that is what I have learnt. However, I am under know illusion that the metric system is logical - it isn't, but maybe it is a little bit more easier to use.
14:19 October 21, 2010 by soultraveler3
@immigrant-girl

Think you might have sleet and freezing rain confused. Freezing rain, is rain as it falls that then freezes on contact when it hit the ground or other surfaces. Sleet is a mixture of snow and rain that tends to melt or just make a nasty slush on the ground.

I'm not british either so saying that brits are the only ones to use that terminology is wrong. ;) Think richardbw is right and the name is based on METAR codes which I believe, are a worldwide set of codes.
23:40 October 21, 2010 by wxman
As a meteorologist for 35 years, I'm of course well versed in the conversions from inches to centimeters and Fahrenheit degrees to Celsius degrees. I simply wanted to provide context for other commenters who may not be so well versed in such nonsense.
07:36 October 24, 2010 by Investor612
Simple formulas most people should be able to do in their head:

To convert Centigrade to Fahrenheit divide by 5, mulitply by 9 and add 32

20 C

20 divided by 5 +4, 4 multiplied by 9 equals 36, 36 +32=68

20C=68F

To convert Fahrenheit to Centigrade subtract 32, divide by 9 and multiply by 5

68F

68 minus 32=36, 36 divided by 9=4, 4 multiplied by 5 =20

68F=20C
09:06 October 24, 2010 by Rick Methven
And 69F is 20.555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555
