Turkish 'terror' suspect arrested at Arlanda

Border police at Arlanda airport arrested a Turkish man wanted by Belgian police on suspicion of "terror crimes" on Friday and is holding him pending a decision on whether to extradite him, Swedish security police said on Sunday.

"He was arrested at Arlanda [Stockholm's international airport] on Friday by the border police. A European warrant had been issued for his arrest a long time ago by Belgium police," Swedish Security Service (Säkerhetspolisen, Säpo) spokesman Patrik Peter told AFP.

The man, a Turkish citizen whose name was not given, is reportedly 30 years old and "was remanded in custody yesterday [Saturday]. He is suspected of terror crimes," Peter said, without providing further details.

"This is a Belgian investigation," he explained.

The man was arrested on terrorism, kidnapping and hostage-taking charges, prosecutor Ronnie Jacobsson told newspaper Aftonbladet on Saturday.

Säpo planned to speak with the suspect on Monday to determine if he opposed extradition and Peter said he expected the process to be launched quickly, although a court would have to rule whether the man could be sent to Belgium.

According to Peter, the man's plane arrived from Syria. He added he does not know whether the man has connections to Sweden or if he has tickets for further travel.

"He has been wanted for a long time and was outside the Schengen area. He came into the Schengen area yesterday [Friday] via Arlanda. This set off an alert and the man was arrested," said Peter.

Lawyer Anders Björk would not comment on how his client responded to the allegations.

"I will not comment on that," said Björk.

A district court will decide whether to hand the man over to Belgium, generally within 30 days after the arrest.

"We will hold a hearing with him on Monday, but it is not a hearing to investigate the crimes. It is more about finding out whether he objects to being extradited," said Peter.

I'd send him back to Turkey or the US to face charges.
16:09 October 24, 2010 by Iraniboy
I hope the arrest is not issued based on a unknown woman call from an unknown telephone booth or similar evidence!

By the way, if someone is criminal why should they wait until they return to Schengen? Shouldn't Interpol interfere tp arrest them anywhere?

Came to see his fellow terror pals living in Sweden, housed and fed by the long suffering Swedish tax payer.

@Double concerto

You are so darn original. I just don't know what to say.

Time for a little tuning and some more original notes, maybe?

Then again, most of you racists are just singing the same old tune, over and over and over and....

Here you got your keywords ; Turkish and terrorist. You have 30 seconds to draw a conclusion and blame it on whole turkish nation or wherever you can reach out. sky is the limit !
17:22 October 24, 2010 by crankpot
just because we are tired of sweden letting in every tom, dick or joe, doesn't mean we are racists... i think america and canada and well every other bloody country on this sick planet is sick and tired of all these clowns.. what do you think would happen if we went into their country and tried to blow them us? think we would be slapped on the fingers and put up in a 'hotel' for a few months, 3 meals a day, snacks, internet so we can research more crap on how to blow up somebody... no i don't think so.. i am not a racisit, just tired of this crap.. enough is enough.. what does the future hold for our children if this continues.. you cannot even walk down the street today without suspecting everybody who passes by.. swede or non swede...

@double concerto,

"And the song remains the same" - Led Zeppelin.

So true.

Some complain but why change the song or add new lyrics when it keeps playing out the same way?

Perhaps someone should tell them to stop shouting the same damn lyrics to a pedophile prophet and his master from their damn minaret towers? But no, thats anti something or something (they can fill in the blanks) but slitting throats over cartoons is their god given right.

Iraniboy,

The reason why Interpol is not utilized all that much for terrorism cases is because some state sponsors of terrorism are also Interpol members. The sharing and cooperation inherent in the agreements of Interpol makes non state sponsors of terror reluctant to share delicate information that could be relayed to terrorists.
17:44 October 24, 2010 by cowboykodp
@crankpot

You are absolutely correct in saying what you say, and that does not make you a racist.

However, @DoubleConcerto and @Remember A are racist beyond a doubt. Read the comments yourself, and if you have an IQ over 50, then you can judge for yourself.

Have a good day.

If objecting to giving international terrorists and murderers asylum, a free run of the country, and free bed and board is racist then I'm proud to be called racist. But the shouter of "racist" immediately loses the debate.
18:27 October 24, 2010 by cowboykodp
@double Concerto

Then why are you responding to me, if I have "lost the Debate"?

According to who has Sweden given asylum to terrorists and murderers?

Could it be that in your demented mind all Immigrants are terrorists and murderers? Then yes that would make you a Racist, and I am glad you admit that you are a racist.

@Lazy

Which story would you like to recommend on this web site?
20:24 October 24, 2010 by Swedesmith
If the Belgian police suspect the man of terrorism, then send him to Belgium and let them sort it out.
20:55 October 24, 2010 by Rishonim
That website Lazydog is suggesting contains malicious codes...

What does Sweden and terror suspects have in common?

"Here you got your keywords ; Turkish and terrorist. You have 30 seconds to draw a conclusion and blame it on whole Turkish nation or wherever you can reach out. sky is the limit ! "

Spot on!

@double concerto

I'm happy that you have a chance to express your sick minds so that you feel relieved and you don't need to go any further like the guy in Malmo etc...

@calebian22

It is so sad to be true but I assume it is not Turkey?! By the way this word 'state sponsor of terrorism' has been misused these days. Two countries are in war with each other on of the support one side of the conflict but if any country support the other side it is called state sponsor of terrorism!!!! It is a strange definition!!
22:35 October 24, 2010 by calebian22
Iraniboy,

My assumption would be that this is in reference to Syria, not Turkey, a NATO ally.
04:15 October 25, 2010 by Norrlands Turk
Give him back to Belgium so they can let him flee.

like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fehriye_Erdal

"In 2006, a couple of hours before her sentence was announced and in spite of being under 24-hour surveillance of the Belgian Secret Service, she managed to flee."
04:29 October 25, 2010 by JoeSwede
Terrorists go home. Put your hate away and build a better world. Push for a more better society back home.
05:33 October 25, 2010 by HowSwedeitis
@ double concerto: You have no evidence of that. The article clearly states: "…does not know whether the man has connections to Sweden or if he has tickets for further travel."

@Norrlands Turk: It is unfortunate that this suspect managed to escape, but this is one person, four years ago. I highly doubt that the Belgian criminal justice system is like some kind of "suspect-sieve."

SAPO did a great job in apprehending the suspect on an International warrant.

Terrorism is really menace and bad thing but proved BLESSING for US and its allies. Terrorism really helped them to achieve what they could have never done it so easily. Terrorism helped them to occupy the countries outside at the cost of few such DRAMAS inside. Turkey is strong candidate for EU , well bring "Terrorism" to get him AWAY..
08:17 October 25, 2010 by comentatir
A few things that caught my attention:

Having a Turkish passport (or being a Turkish citizen) is not same with being Turkish. There used to many many times this was spotted by people with non-Turkish backgrounds. Attention!

Does it differ when Belgian police asks for arrest of someone or Turkey? Because there must be many many terror suspects suspected by Turkey living in Sweden? Is Swedish police unable to caught to suspects named by Turkey? Or they simply dont consider them as terror suspect? Whats the deal here??
08:27 October 25, 2010 by anglesaxon
its the same old story,devious moslems causing mischief again.the only way to stop it is to send em all back home,problem solved.never mind if they were born here,if a dog was born in a stall you wouldnt call it a horse would you?
08:38 October 25, 2010 by asian369
@anglesaxon... please do include all the NON-MUSLIMS troops in MUSLIM countries to get back home..
10:01 October 25, 2010 by Norrlands Turk
@anglesaxon

and you consume the same amount of oxygen with rest of the people in this world.. what a waste.
11:42 October 25, 2010 by Rrakkma
That person sure is not "Turkish". Just like Fehriye Erdal isn't... Period.

And as usual, with such games all people are forced to take sides and hate each other, just because some hired groups are messing things up under the disguise of religions. Good work, keep up hating instead of using your brains.
13:19 October 25, 2010 by Eastman
So now we should hold Turky resposible, just like they are continue to holding the SD resposible for the shooting in malmo!
