Ex-gang members hunt Malmö gunman: report

Published: 25 Oct 10 15:26 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/29816/20101025/

Ex-members of criminal gangs in Malmö in southern Sweden have taken up the hunt for an unknown gunman thought to be responsible for nearly 20 shootings targeting people with immigrant backgrounds.

According to the local Sydsvenskan newspaper, the former leader of one of the town’s largest criminal networks is among a group of “old friends who have stuck together” and who are now actively looking for the gunman which has left Malmö’s immigrant community gripped with fear.

“He had better hope that we don’t find him first,” a man who referred to himself as “Leo” told the newspaper during an interview in his apartment in the city’s Rosengård neighbourhood.

The man believes he and his friends have better knowledge of the area where the shootings have taken place and will likely find the gunman before the police.

“It will be much easier for us to catch him than for the police,” he told the newspaper.

At a Monday morning afternoon press briefing, police in Malmö expressed urged concerned citizens to leave the investigation to the police.

"People shouldn't take the law into their own hands," said criminal inspector Börje Sjöholm.

"It’s totally reprehensible. You can’t have that in a society governed by the rule of law; it’s the job of the police to uphold law and order."

Sjöholm added that a number of false alarms had come in at the weekend.

"We received calls about a number of shootings that didn't turn out to be shootings," he said.

He explained that a special investigative group was launched after police concluded that several unexplained shootings in the city may be related.

“We’ve gone through the shootings we’ve had. When we realized it could be the same perpetrator we decided to launch this investigation. We’re talking about 15 shootings or so in the span of a year,” he said.

However four additional shootings have taken place since the investigation began which have been added to the original 15 incidents.

Altogether eight people have been injured, and one killed in the shootings.

“We don’t want to say exactly which shootings,” he said.

Sjöholm also commented on the weapons believed to be used in the shootings.

“We’ve confirmed that a number of weapons have been used in several shootings,” he said, although he refused to confirm how many shootings may be tied to the same gun.

Sjöholm also explained that police believe they are hunting a single individual.

"The profiling group has gone through all the shootings and things there is a strong grounds to believe it's the work of one and the same assailant, but we can't let ourselves get locked into that," he said.

Police nevertheless hope they have secured DNA evidence from a man who beat and eventually fired a shot at a tailor and hairdresser in the Augustenborg district on Saturday night.

“The tailor was headbutted, so we’ve taken swabs, taken clothing and samples. We’ll send them over to the National Forensics Lab straight away tomorrow morning for analysis,” Ewa-Gun Westford of the Malmö police told the Aftonbladet newspaper on Sunday evening.

Police in Skåne county received a number of calls about suspected shootings on Sunday night.

“Since 8pm, we’ve had eight or ten calls. We’ve gone out to all of them, but nothing has proven to be acute,” police spokesperson Sofie Österheim told the TT news agency.

Tensions in the city remain high as one young women learned on Sunday night when she was stopped by two police officers at Nobeltorget square.

“A caller warned of a woman wearing dark clothes and shorts who had a holster on her thigh with a gun in it,” said Calle Persson of the Skåne county police.

It turned out that the woman was on her way to a costume party.

“We pointed out to her that her clothing was in appropriate,” said Persson.

Shouldn't the criminal gangs be in prison instead of playing "police"? or maybe these gangs run Malmö already?

All it takes is that one innocent "Kallas Kaviar" guy gets jumped by misstake by these gangs and then the might of SD will come down on these fellas!
16:45 October 25, 2010 by cowboykodp
No HP, you are overestimating the "might" of the SD.

While vigilantism is unacceptable in the modern world, this is exactly what I have been warning of for some time. What do you expect when you demonize and antagonize people? It only provokes them.

For all you who have shared in this SD wave, hope you are happy now. This is not 1930's Germany, where the poor Jews did not fight back against hate.
16:54 October 25, 2010 by RoyceD
Good to know you get 15 shots before police start to organise some sort of effort.
17:01 October 25, 2010 by hpunlimited
The SD has been demonized for basically everything. So yes you are right. Basic fact is that we do not even know if these "shots" are racially motivated at all. After all if the guy lives in Rosengård and 99% are immigrants, how big are the chances that this guy is a ethnical Swede?

The original "Lazerman" was a immigrant himself, who "became" a Swedish citizen. You rarely hear anyone mention this.

My biggest bet is that maybe the first couple of shots, were intended against criminals and then he just shot at random people to throw them off his original intention.

The SD are correctly 'demonized' for being fascist vermin.

im really scared by the swedish police, a criminal is being doing his job without any problem since months and the police doesnt know a clue about who it might be, all that in a country of 9 millions people, the swedish model is surely one of the best but obviously not the best in matters of security unless there are two kinds of threating cases like this one...

May be they know but.....do not want to do anything......
18:28 October 25, 2010 by Nemesis
I have a better idea.

Why doesn't the police put police snipers on high roof tops and shoot the first person with a gun in there hand who is not wearing a uniform?

As for the ex-gang members. That is the first step towards no go areas similar to those we had in Northern Ireland that were policed by paramilitaries. The police should be arresting them.
19:09 October 25, 2010 by GefleFrequentFlyer
"Ex gang members"? Is that a oxymoron? Sounds like the Malmo police are pretty impotent and being blackmailed by the gangs in the area.

Keep hunting that Sweden Democrat bogeyman. Let me know what you find.
19:43 October 25, 2010 by ppaf
This "ex-gang" members and such is merely to give a Hollywood touch to this whole story, and distract from the real story.

Stick to doing police work and arrest whoever is doing this. Arrest also whoever is violating the law in order to pursue this investigation on their own terms...

Keep in mind though that not catching this person and in the case that other such cases occur, people will start to act more and more on fear and will begin to do crazy things.

Doing crazy and irrational things out of fear is not a all-white privilege of SD voters ;)

what is this report about ? do you wanna warn the Gun man or the police by your speech.!
21:07 October 25, 2010 by Iraniboy
This relaxing behaviour of police is really disturbing!! The tailor assault happened yesterday but they want to send the samples to the lab tomorrow?!! They don't feel that they should be in a hurry a little bit?!

This mad racist who is going around and shoot immigrants everyday and these gang members rants are proofs that Swedish police should think twice about their methods to capture criminals. Please don't say SD also say this!! They may say this and this correct, they may call for revision of immigration policies, it is maybe correct but spreading hatred against people of certain race and religion is disgusting and it works as an engine to create more crime! So their suggestions for reduction of crime will lead to more crimes in totall!

Leo don´t hunt him ! let the police do his job. the law is best
22:08 October 25, 2010 by Swedesmith
Usually violent offenders are known to the victim. Catching a person who performs random violence is the most difficult crime to solve. Hopefully this person will slip up and will leave a clue and/or a witness. Then the police can apprehend him and find out his true motives. Asking police to hurry may just cause them to arrest the wrong person.
01:00 October 26, 2010 by Revenge
Hunting down this man is a matter of self defense, the people who are hunting him down are just doing an reaction towards his action, I hope the police support this group.
02:06 October 26, 2010 by Sam1
First in future every ones DNA is taken and preserved + Eye ID. and a 3d photograp on the ID which will be also RF.

Second these guys are just Good Samaritans who help the law..every strong man and able human in Sweden must do his best to lead the polis to this murder..and so what if some X-gang tries to catch him..

First they will be doing something positive, second they blow their cover so its like two birds with one shot..

I do wish they catch him first and wake up up from this dream (their way) you know what he reminds me of, the mean guy from the movie Open season..

He thinks he is correcting nature which have been perverted..I know how these asholes think.
06:56 October 26, 2010 by Carnitas
The seems a lot like those militias they have in all of the Middle Eastern countries. Like how each politician and cleric and whomever has his own little 'gang,' it looks like the Malmö police dept. has their own as well. The Islamization of Sweden continues.

I wonder if these "ex-gang members" would do the same in a search for a Swedish's girl's rapist/murderer?
06:59 October 26, 2010 by StockholmSam
Great. Now instead of one hot-headed armed criminal on the streets of Malmö itching to pull a trigger, we have ten. How are these jokers going to know they have the right guy? Are they going to run a DNA test on him along with an investigation? I doubt it. They are going to execute a few innocents before they get the perp.

I am now more worried for Malmö citizens than I was yesterday.

@hpununlimited:

John Ausonius aka "Lasermannen" was born in Sweden and grew up in posh Lidingö where he maybe was under the influence of his all-Swedish friends.

His parents were(are) German and Swiss. Could there be some Nazi influence there as well?

Reading some of these comments it actually comes as no surprise that there is a guy in Malmö shooting immigrants in what appear to be racially motivated attacks.

Without naming any of the posters above, some of your comments make me feel that it could be one of you that is doing the shooting!
