Sweden set for first circumcision law trial

Published: 29 Oct 10 07:58 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/29888/20101029/

A 50-year-old man is the first person to be charged in Sweden on suspicions of performing illegal circumcisions.

The man, an Egyptian citizen, is believed to have circumcised nine boys without a licence from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).

Sweden’s law on circumcising boys hasn’t been tested in court since it came into force nine years ago.

“This is the first time. We haven’t reported any other case to the police,” the health board’s Torsten Mossberg told TT.

The man is also charged with several cases of assault. During the trial, a film will be shown to support allegations that a boy from Tierp in eastern Sweden wasn’t sufficiently anesthetized during the procedure.

According to the indictment, two brothers from the Stockholm suburb of Botkyrka suffered tissue damage, pain, and loss of circulation from a bandage which was used as a tourniquet.

The man has denied committing any crimes.

The 50-year-old previously had a licence, but the health board revoked it because of doubts about his abilities.

“My client feels like this happened for no reason,” the man’s defence attorney, Leif Silbersky, told TT.

According to the law, only people with a special licence issued by the health board can perform circumcisions for non-medical reasons, and only on children younger than two-months old. Doctors can also carry out the procedure, including on older children.

The health board doesn’t think Sweden's law works, estimating that only one third of the roughly 3,000 boys circumcised for religious reasons in Sweden each year have the procedure performed by people with authorisation.

The remaining circumcisions are carried out by people who lack qualifications, according to the agency.

This should be totally banned it's mutilation. I mean it's Illegal to dock a dog's tail but this is allowed for small child.
09:15 October 29, 2010 by Jarvilainennen
Oooh crap, this is something that just does not fit in modern world anymore.

Pretty soon some idiot will be presenting suveys made by all sorts of quacks how circumcision allegedly protects from HIV or some other virus...

I´ve seen people citing Dr.Phil on this.

There is absolutely no justification for putting kids through that.

Although I don't necessarily feel that circumcision is needed, however both the Jewish and Muslim traditions do this.

And there is ABSOLUTELY evidence that circumcision reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Not to mention hygienic reasons.

But it is pretty mean and traumatic to children.???!!!
11:30 October 29, 2010 by JHD
@ Cowboykodp

Don't forget about the US, the circumcision rate rate hovers around 60% and peaked at 90% during the mid sixties. This has nothing to do with the Jewish or Muslim traditions, it is purely cultural.

Moreover, your argument seems strong until you bias it with "mean and traumatic." I'm sure you're well aware that circumcisions often take place durning the first month of a child's life. Therefore, by implying that it causes psychological harm (the definition of traumatic) is absurd, do you have any recollection of your first month?

We cut the umbilical cord of new born for a reason and so is the case with circumcision. I believe , it should be legalized in the Sweden so that we can avoid such incidents.
12:22 October 29, 2010 by The.Local.Troll
@Asian369

You do not know what you are talking about you fool. It is not illegal in Sweden. It is regulated, they are taking that butcher to court because he was doing without a license.
13:24 October 29, 2010 by asian369
@the.Local.Troll.. thanks for the information and compliments as well.
13:51 October 29, 2010 by The.Local.Troll
@Asian369

You obviously needed clarification on both points. How can you possibly compare the cutting of the umbilical cord with circumcision? Circumcision is a cultural/religious tradition only (except where genuine medical grounds warrant).
14:30 October 29, 2010 by Syftfel
Let's hope this trial is given plenty of, and relentless, publicity. What you have here is the front lines of the war between primitive third world antics, and western civilization. May he be given ample jail time and then expulsion from our country. He needs to be taught a strong lesson!
14:32 October 29, 2010 by cowboykodp
@JHD

If you notice, my last sentence ended with .???!!!

Meaning, I don't necessarily know if it is Traumatic and mean. Its a question that needs analyzing.

However, the benefits in later life are undoubtedly positive.
15:10 October 29, 2010 by Rishonim
@Syftfel, Primitive third world antics, vs. western civilization? You mean like having catholic priests playing around with little boys un-circumcised toys and fingering them? All of this with the blessing from the pope!!!

@troll.. analyzing circumcision ,without bringing any cluture or religion, is still debatable. We can doubt but simply cant velify these practices just for the reasons that these values get inspired from any religion or culture. Religions do not fight each other , these are the followers who do this. Umbillical cord is also an extra skin like penis. Though child do suffer pain in both but it never become the part of memory. Attributing the circumcision with the consent of child at his mature age is seemingly more problematic. I think we need not to make it an issue , and circumcision really have more plus, then it should be made compulsory just like cutting of umbilical cord.
16:42 October 29, 2010 by anony1
I am so unhappy someone did this to me when I was child!
17:22 October 29, 2010 by KOTFrank
"According to the indictment, two brothers from the Stockholm suburb of Botkyrka suffered tissue damage, pain, and loss of circulation from a bandage which was used as a tourniquet."

This 50 year old man who has been deemed unfit for performing circumcision is obvious. Never should a circumcision be even remotely bandaged tightly. And "tissue damage" covers a lot of ground. Could mean part glans necrosis to permanent scarring of the shaft. In others words, it could be these two boys are horribly disfigured beyond the mutilation that is circumcision. This man has problems with authority and maybe has a blood fetish or just needs easy money.

@Asian and @Cowboy:

The Royal Dutch Medical Association (46,000 members) have touched on ALL points of male circumcision, unlike all the medical associations in the US. ( http://tinyurl.com/254kvyp )

"There is no convincing evidence that circumcision is useful or necessary in terms of prevention or hygiene." "risk of HIV infection, it is reasonable to put off circumcision until the age at which such a risk is relevant" "Contrary to what is often thought, circumcision entails the risk of medical and psychological complications." "Non-therapeutic circumcision of male minors conflicts with the child's right to autonomy and physical integrity." "(concerning religious circumcision) restrict it as much as possible." "There are good reasons for a legal prohibition of non-therapeutic circumcision of male minors, as exists for female genital mutilation."

My uncle was a soldier in WWI. One day when he was sitting in the muddy trench he felt something strange in his pants and he looked down and watched his foreskin roll out the bottom of his pants leg! Life in the trenches had rotted it off!
18:01 October 29, 2010 by Hoath
A recent survey in the USA found that circumcision, far from being medically beneficial, actually resulted in death for 1 in 11,000 who underwent the operation and, of course, you have to add onto that all the other operation problems.
19:23 October 29, 2010 by locaxy
If it was just a Muslim tradition, then it wouldn't be a big deal for European countries to outlaw it (see the banning of minarets and veils). But it also touches Jews. And while it's a-OK to trash Islam and Muslims in modern Europe, Judaism and Jews are a taboo for better or worse.
19:42 October 29, 2010 by Syftfel
This, primitive, barbaric procedure can only be tolerated when it's medically justified. It MUST be outlawed for any religious or other supersticious reasons. I'm appalled that we're even having this discussion. Whoever practices medicine without being licensed to do so must be severely punished!

20:48 October 29, 2010 by Swedesmith

21:08 October 29, 2010 by cowboykodp
Thats just the tip of the iceberg.

I heard Adolf Åkesson left him a big tip. That explains his feminine appearance.
21:59 October 29, 2010 by Rishonim
@locaxy,

Your statement is irrevocably out of base. This is not a Jew vs. Muslim problem. It affects both Ishmael and Isaac alike.. When it comes to banning religious practises like kosher or dhabihah slaughtering, I don't think the Swedish establishment will give preference over one group. The reason it may be a tab more noticeable with the tribe of Ishmael is probably for the simple fact that for every 2 Jewish boys birth they are 20.000 Muslims boys????
00:00 October 30, 2010 by Kaethar
@locaxy: Sweden forbids slaughter without stunning, which pisses off both jews and muslims. Sweden is now moving towards the banning of circumcision (for non-medical reasons) and what Jewish or Muslim traditions say about this will be seen as totally irrelevant. The rights of children and animals (the defenseless groups) comes before choices made by adults. :/

Thought I would throw this bit of irreverence into the discussion:

I have not read this article in full length yet, but i googled: Circumcision, American Indians and this popped up by accident:

http://www.historyofcircumcision.net/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=61

I´m thinking, if the American Indians had circumcision as a common practice, could it possibly be that the American white troops would have called it a pagan act and therefore a sin or something? If it was an Indian habit, it probably would have been a bad habit, right?
07:22 October 30, 2010 by ericrufinosiah
Today in Sweden,we have got teenage boys of the Muslim faith being circumsised

by unauthorised persons and next to come up will females of the Muslim faith to face the scissors.Hopefully,the swedish Authorities put a stop on this practise

unless for health reasons or otherwise,no-racism involved in this comment .

@Swedesmith

Yes, swedee, I know, thus the word 'irreverence'. English is my first language.

A little dark humor at the idea that there may be an 'upside' to a botched circumcision - yikes - otoh, 14 more years.

I want to know if the man came with references? How do you do followed calls to check out his resume? How do you determine customer satisfaction? All the testimonials would be exactly the same - aaaaaaiiiiiggghhh!

This may give you nightmares:

Oooo, I like it when you call me sweedee. I sure hope you are a girl.
23:33 October 30, 2010 by giltedged
The problem is that the Swedes do not understand their roles well. They are meant to provide good housing, free education, free medical treatment and enough funds to enable immigrants to avoid working.

They are not meant to pass laws forbidding immigrants cutting the throats of sheep in their flats, or beating their wives, or forbidding male and "female circumscion" or penalising youths who gang-rape Swedish girls.
06:20 November 1, 2010 by roger85
hhmm, I think if anybody actually knew what smegma was they would get themselves and their children circumcised asap! Look it up in the dictionary! And I know by comments that anybody who is against it is probably "shmeggy" themselves! I have lots of friends who are nurses who have to clean people..believe me..chicks don't dig smeg!!!!
04:55 November 2, 2010 by KATHLEEN7546
Giltedged. I like the sarcasm. FYI this business is immanent and very serious. In the US, The American Academy of Pediatrics has asked their members to consider performing clitorectomies. The level of infiltration is more than worrisome.
07:50 November 2, 2010 by Alf Garnett
It's not just the man who carried out these circumcisions, the parents of the children should also be prosecuted, fined & jailed, then deported.

@roger85 #36 smegma is not particular to men, women also get it. Can be avoided by washing, usually using some type of soap & water. If you look it up there are bound to be some instructions.
20:37 February 19, 2012 by MurasakiSunshine
It's time for Sweden to outlaw circumcision completely. Boys deserve protection. No religion or god is an excuse to cut up your child against their will and intentionally endanger their life.

Penile Cancer: Penile cancer occurs in only 1 in 100,000 men and rarely occurs in men younger than 60 (1/3 of penile cancers are caused by HPV, meaning they can be prevented with safe sex/vaccines). The American Cancer Society (cancer.org) does not recommend infant circumcision for the prevention of penile cancer. Circumcised men can and do get penile cancer.

HIV/AIDS: A condom will prevent HIV/AIDS. A condom will not work better because the man is circumcised. Countries with higher male circumcision rates have higher rates of HIV. America has a circumcision rate of 80% and 0.6% of the population has HIV. Japan has a circumcision rate of less than 1% and 0.01% of the population has HIV. These numbers are from the World Health Organization and you can view them at their official website.

Hygiene: As an infant, a foreskin requires no special cleaning. You wipe it down like a finger. You do not retract the foreskin. As an adult, a man needs only to retract his foreskin and wash it with water for a few seconds. Hardly an inconvenience. As for smegma, both men and women produce it. It's perfectly healthy.

Neonatal circumcision is not recommended by any medical association in the world. 117 boys die from circumcision every year in the United States. Google Amitai Moshe, Ryleigh McWillis, and Jamaal Coleson, Jr. These are just some of the children who have died from circumcision in the past few years.

Please visit thewholenetwork.org, noharmm.org, drmomma.org, and circumstitions.com or search for "peaceful parenting" or "The Whole Network" on Facebook for more information about neonatal circumcision.
