Containers proposed as student housing solution

Officials in Stockholm have come up with a novel solution to address the student housing shortage afflicting university towns across the country: converting cargo containers into student residences.

The proposal calls for building the first 50 homes near the Royal Institute of Technology's (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, KTH) on Drottning Kristinas väg.
If all goes to according to plan, students could move into the dwellings as early as next autumn, DN reported.
Each container occupies 25 square metres and includes a bathroom and kitchenette. The building would also include a greenhouse on the roof.
At Gärdet's Studentbacken, one idea is to build another two to three floors on the three eight-storey buildings that the Stockholm Student Housing Foundation (Stiftelsen Stockholms studentbostäder, SSSB) currently runs.
The proposed 220 new student apartments barely scratch the surface in terms of addressing the acute housing shortage for students in Stockholm. The average time students spend on SSSB's wait list is 15 months.
"The situation has deteriorated drastically and the queuing time has gone through the roof. A few years ago, it was three months," SSSB communications director Anders Cronqvist told DN.
Attempts by The Local to reach SSSB were unsuccessful.

Tuition fees: We have introduced it because we would like to compete with the U.K, the U.S.A, Australia and Canada but we can not build housing for new comers. LOL
People certainly dont come for the weather or the women.
yeah...next autumn there will be plenty of space to sleep. I think the result can be seen easily lets ask studera (1st Dec) to see how many pple have paid the applicatn fee.
please if i may a ask...why is the swedish society more open, supportive and welcoming 2 assylum seekers compared 2 students and graduates in Sweden. Why are swedish policies so closed and not fufilling to these educated immigrants.

It's so easy to answer your question. They don't want the immigrants to take their high class job positions such as engineers, doctors, managers, etc. To establish a reasonable ground for this purpose they import uneducated low-class refugees with very low expectations (normally survival) from Swedish society and they will, in principle, do whatever job they can get from cutting trees in the forests to cleaning the toilets. In turn, they pay back for this trick by not paying the taxes committing crimes.
I am happy that Sweden is paid back for its idiotic immigration policies.

Tack, your motivational speech is not enough to solve the issue on ground. Many great optimists who came to study here have gone because the society changed them and they later became a realist! Abraham lincoln studied under street light, he was motivated, studied hard because he saw future in himself based on the opportunities present in his society if only he could study and work hard. Stop sounding like one of these folks who rant for refuge here to cut trees. CALL A SPADE A SPADE!
In reality nobody tells the real situation to the international student's before they come to Sweden (Or maybe somebody tells but the students don't hear) because universities compete for students and they are who the student gets to know first. Students receive their information from universities and get a lovely picture of life in Sweden while the rest of society does not care much about them.
About containers...if they want to make it slightly better than a tent, it would work ( I mean no water, no kitchen , no shower, no WC), but if they want to put these facilities in a container, they better gather their will together and build a proper building because IMHO it would be cheaper this way.
Mother: "How are things going in Sweden honey?"
Son: "Good ... I finally found a place to live, and I just moved in."
Mother: "Oh good. What complex are you living in?"
Son: "Well, it's not so much of a complex as it is an industrial storage container."
Mother: "YOU'RE LIVING IN A STORAGE CONTAINER! Who the hell put you there?!?!"
Son: "The student housing department ... and its only 4,000 crowns a month."
Yah, I really see hordes of parents of international students being thrilled their children move half way across the world, and end up living in a storage container.

One can only imagine the sound of footsteps reverberating through all that metal...
A friend of mine lived on top of containers like that, difference was that his "house" was made of two building-site cabins elements. It was actually like a real house inside, but with metal bars on windows.
They are nothing but steel frames and you just screw 2/4s + inner & outer walls on the frame. Easy and fast, I´ve built them myself.
Containers are containers, I woudn´t house a dog in something like that. I sort of have an idea who is supposed to live in those in the end but being a politically correct kinda guy this morning I won´t say it.
Still, I´m willing to bet the simple steel frame element is wayyy better, cheaper too. You can just knock down a wall and join 2 or 3 apartments if you so wish. Thick metal don´t cut so easy.
The fact that this idea is being realized in Stockholm should be reassuring enough. Swedes won't live in slum conditions, they won't let their exchange students live in slums because it affects their international academic image negatively. While furnishings might be sparce in the containers, at least they'll be properly insulated, rather sound proof, and I'm fairly sure it'll become a sort of fashion trend amongst students, if they're done properly.
i know bro... the situation is bad in major cities ..and that is bad...but have u tried helping any student to shift wid u temporarily (if ur in the same city)...hav u done any thing if ur soo concerned...and why all that hate against the immigrants... they r also humans...
and no country is perfect in this world..neither is urs...and no man is perfect...neither r u....we should just keep on trying to find the happiness in what we have and work hard for more better life...and a better society

As many others have already mentioned the fees are almost the same in comparison with many good universities in English speaking countries such as the US,Canada and Australia.
They have a lot in common you know. FOr a short time one can experience warmth and pleasantness, but eventually what you are stuck with is just boring, frigid gloom that eats at your soul.
why? because at the end you want to have a job, living happily in a friendly society without stress... oh what?! what a high expectation! let me see! You cannot get a permanent residency easily and you are under stress all the time. You cannot get a job competing with other europian students. the society is not friendly toward immigrants. and the 2 latters are not somethings that can be changed.
So maybe really we should not come here?

Canada is not like that anymore, you can not get Permanent Residency after your graduation unless you have a job (and most often you can not get a job unless you have permanent residency). It is also not socialist anymore (Harper's conservative government is ruling... no liberals or New Democrats are in power)... and people are not friendly towards immigrants.... you could get an idea about their friendliness if you read the comments that they leave on www.CBC.ca (Canada's BBC) on immigration issues...
10% of Canadian's are also working outside of Canada due to the problems with getting jobs inside Canada.
Anyways this may be the future of urban housing!!!!

I am sure that if students made mention of this to the University or Swedish government, just the shame would get them to build condos in a matter of months!
Also, Im from US and Canada, and the only reason that the US does so well is because it has so many Universities, in a town like Boston, which is where I am from. Just 20 years ago my partner was paying $30,000 a year for tuition only, and an additional 1,200 a month for a two bedroom in Boston. Student housing was only a few hundred dollars less per month, and in Canada, well, the fees here for attending college are so inexpensive, compared to US, that you can go to University for less than 10,000 per year, and studios around the city can be had for less than $500.00.
